The Building Program of Herod the Great

The Building Program of Herod the Great

Duane W. Roller

University of California Press
1998
sidottu
Herod the Great, King of Judaea from 444 B.C., is known as one of the world's great villains. This notoriety has overshadowed his actual achievements, particularly his role as a client king of Rome during Augustus's reign as emperor. An essential aspect of Herod's responsibilities as king of Judaea was his role as a builder. Remarkably innovative, he created an astonishing record of architectural achievement, not only in Judaea but also throughout Greece and the Roman east. Duane W. Roller systematically presents and discusses all the building projects known to have been initiated by Herod, and locates this material in a broad historical and cultural context. Bringing together previously inaccessible material, Roller enriches our understanding of the enigmatic Herod and provides new insights into Roman architecture. Herod was instrumental in the diffusion of the Augustan architectural revolution into the provinces and was the first to build outside Italy such Italian architectural forms as the basilica, amphitheater, villa, and Italian temple. Herod's legacy provided a groundwork for the architectural Romanization of the east, influencing the construction of the great temple complexes and palaces so familiar from later Roman architecture. Herod, like Augustus himself, was not only interested in architecture but also in diplomatic and financial contacts among cities of the region. In addition to providing a repertorium of the building projects, this study is also an exploration of international relations in the eastern Mediterranean at the beginning of the Roman imperial period.

Sather Classical Lectures, Volume Four: Epochs of Greek and Roman Biography provides an episodic yet insightful exploration of the development of biography as a literary genre in ancient Greece and Rome. Rooted in the principle articulated by Polybius, the work emphasizes the interconnectedness of history and the evolution of human ideas, particularly in the context of biographical writing. The author selects topics that address key problems and stages in the growth of biographical purpose, drawing connections between ancient and modern biographers, from Plutarch's enduring influence on psychoanalytic biographers to the continued relevance of classical ideals in contemporary biographical theory. While not attempting a complete history, the book offers a rich analysis of how biographical works reflect broader cultural and intellectual movements, and how the goals and methods of ancient biographers resonate with modern practices. This volume also stands out for its thorough academic approach, bolstered by an extensive array of footnotes and references designed not just for scholars, but for readers with a broad interest in biography. The book is the result of specialized study, offering a detailed bibliography that aims to engage those with a genuine enthusiasm for the genre. The author balances academic rigor with the intention to make ancient biography accessible and engaging, demonstrating the timeless relevance of ancient practices and offering a critical examination of their enduring influence. This makes the volume both a valuable resource for experts and an engaging read for those curious about the evolution of biographical writing. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1928.

Global Capital, Political Institutions, and Policy Change in Developed Welfare States
This book argues that the post-1970 rise in international capital mobility has not contributed to the retrenchment of developed welfare states. Nor has globalization reduced the revenue-raising capacities of governments and undercut the political institutions that support the welfare state. Rather, institutional features of the polity and the welfare state determine the extent to which the economic and political pressures associated with globalization produce welfare state retrenchment. In systems characterized by electoral institutions, social corporatist interest representation and policy-making, centralized political authority, and social insurance-based program structures, pro-welfare state interests are favored. In nations characterized by majoritarian electoral institutions, pluralist interest representation and policy-making, decentralization of policy-making authority, and liberal program structure, the economic and political pressures attendant on globalization are translated into rollbacks of social protection. Globalization has had least impact on large welfare states of Northern Europe and most effect on small welfare states of Anglo nations.

Primate Behaviour

Cambridge University Press
1995
pokkari
This book is about the social life of monkeys, apes and humans. Its central theme is the importance of social information and knowledge to a full understanding of primate social behaviour and organisation. Using this perspective, the authors seek to demonstrate a continuity between human and non-human society that is often not recognised elsewhere in the literature. Topics covered include: an overview of the contexts of behaviour; a comparison of blind strategies and tactical decision-making; social cognition; a review of intentionalist interpretations of behaviour; kinship; language and its social implications; and the constraints of culture. Primate Behaviour will be of interest to senior undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to researchers in the fields of biological and social anthropology, primatology, psychology, behavioural science and evolutionary biology.

The Letters of John

The Letters of John

Duane F. Watson

Cambridge University Press
2023
sidottu
In this commentary, Duane F. Watson provides a careful verse-by-verse interpretation of the Letters of John that foregrounds the author's rhetorical strategy. He emphasizes the means that John uses to persuade the churches he addresses to continue affirming the Johannine tradition and to resist secessionists who corrupt it. While illuminating the sophistication of the author's rhetorical approach, Watson also explores traditional exegetical questions, demonstrating how many issues of interpretation are clarified or resolved by rhetorical analysis. He also sheds new light on the relationship between the author, his audience, and opposition in their original context. This commentary features 'closer look' sections giving more detail on related subjects and 'bridging the horizons' sections that suggest how these epistles address our world. The commentary is aimed at the educated laity, clergy, college and graduate students, and scholars interested in the Letters of John, the history of the churches addressed, and the social formation and location of these early Christians.
