Quitting the Nation

Quitting the Nation

Eric R. Schlereth

Perceptions of the United States as a nation of immigrants are so commonplace that its history as a nation of emigrants is forgotten. However, once the United States came into existence, its citizens immediately asserted rights to emigrate for political allegiances elsewhere. Quitting the Nation recovers this unfamiliar story by braiding the histories of citizenship and the North American borderlands to explain the evolution of emigrant rights between 1750 and 1870. Eric R. Schlereth traces the legal and political origins of emigrant rights in contests to decide who possessed them and who did not. At the same time, it follows the thousands of people that exercised emigration right citizenship by leaving the United States for settlements elsewhere in North America. Ultimately, Schlereth shows that national allegiance was often no more powerful than the freedom to cast it aside. The advent of emigrant rights had lasting implications, for it suggested that people are free to move throughout the world and to decide for themselves the nation they belong to. This claim remains urgent in the twenty-first century as limitations on personal mobility persist inside the United States and at its borders.

9 BENEFITS In nine ways, this manual simplifies and accelerates your fiber optic network design process. First, it leads the designer through an organized and logical, 14-step process. The author developed this process from training more than three thousand professionals during the last 22 years. Second, it provides an extensive list of specifications that the designer needs to consider for each component. Third, it provides typical values for these specifications. Fourth, it identifies the situations in which such specifications are appropriate. Fifth, it provides a package of forms that the designer can use in his design activities. These forms accelerate the design process by including information that would take months to develop. Sixth, it includes subjects, like range testing and certification strategies, that are not found elsewhere. Seventh, from conversations with more than ten thousand designers, end users, installers, fiber optic professionals and clients, it includes the lessons learned, both by successful design activities and oversights. Eighth, it includes many practical considerations.Ninth, it provides review questions for most chapters, so that the designer can test his understanding of the material presented. This manual helps the designer avoid overlooking important considerations, determine a combination of components that achieves low total installed cost, design to meet future bandwidth requirements, and design a network based on existing standards.
The Disordered Mind

The Disordered Mind

Neurological and psychiatric disorders have long been regarded as fundamentally different, depending on whether they appear to affect the brain or the mind. In reality, the brain and the mind are inseparable. Both types of disorder can affect every aspect of brain function: from perception, action, memory and emotion to empathy, social interaction, attention and consciousness. It is easy to view brain disorders as simply tragic or frightening. However, studying where these functions go wrong provides a window on the workings of the healthy brain, and makes it more likely that scientists and clinicians will be able to develop effective treatments or preventative strategies. As individuals, and as a society, we are also able to better empathise with people with disorders of the mind.Building on his pioneering research, Eric R. Kandel illustrates how breakthrough studies of brain disruptions can deepen our understanding of thought, feeling, behaviour, memory and creativity, and perhaps in the future will transform medical care and lead to the development of a unified theory of mind.
The 11th Michigan Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War
The hard-fighting 11th Michigan Volunteer Infantry was recruited from sparsely settled southwest Michigan shortly after the Civil War broke out. Mainly composed of young farmers and tradesmen, the regiment rapidly evolved into one of the Army of the Cumberland's elite combat units, tenaciously fighting its way through some of the war's bloodiest engagements. This book--featuring a complete unit roster--chronicles the regiment through the words of the veterans, tracing their development from a rabble of idealists into a fine-tuned fighting machine that executed successful bayonet charges against superior numbers. The narrative continues into the postwar period, discussing the ex-soldiers' careers through Reconstruction and the Gilded Age. Photographs, maps, illustrations and a statistical analysis round out the work.
The 6th Michigan Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War
The 6th Michigan Volunteer Infantry first deployed to Baltimore, where the soldiers' exemplary demeanor charmed a mainly secessionist population. Their subsequent service along the Mississippi River was a perfect storm of epidemic disease, logistical failures, guerrilla warfare, profiteering, martinet West Pointers and scheming field officers, along with the doldrums of camp life punctuated by bloody battles. The Michiganders responded with alcoholism, insubordination and depredations. Yet they saved the Union right at Baton Rouge and executed suicidal charges at Port Hudson. This first modern history of the controversial regiment concludes with a statistical analysis, a roster and a brief summary of its service following conversion to heavy artillery.

The Amazing Dog Training Man's Ultimate Guide To Dogs: 40 Lessons On Training, Behavior, Nutrition And More
If you'd like your dog to listen to ALL of your commands and to stop annoying behaviors... using simple, proven techniques... training only 10 minutes a day, then this book will show you how. Here's the story... I don't know about you, but having a dog can sometimes be downright confusing. Sometimes frustrating. Especially if your dog pulls on leash, jumps on everyone (including you), steals your dinner off the table and doesn't come when called. To make matters worse, much of the information about dog training is conflicting. A confused dog owner does not know who to listen to. I know because I got involved with dog training with my first dog who was a real handful. I knew nothing about housetraining, how to stop chewing, jumping or pulling on leash and everything I tried seemed to make it worse. Everywhere I turned I got different advice. Some years ago, J. Allen Boone said: "There's facts about dogs, and then there's opinions about them. The dogs have the facts, and the humans have the opinions. If you want the facts about the dog, always get them straight from the dog. If you want opinions, get them from humans." Over the past 20+ years, I have studied thousands of dogs for the answers and have compiled it all in my newest book. And that's just the beginning... Here are some tips that you'll find in the book; How To Avoid 7 Common Dog Training Mistakes. (Besides the long term problems your dog can develop if you do any of these mistakes, there are major consequences for you if make any of these mistakes). "Keep It Simple Student" - Applies To Teaching Come When Called. (And how you get much better results when you follow some simple and effective steps.) Dog Doesn't Come When Called? You Are NOT Alone. (The #1 reason why dogs don't come when called and how to avoid it.) How The Man With A Stolen Brain Reveals The "Secret" To Dog Ownership. (True story of a famous French writer who revealed the "Secret" over 200 years ago.) The One Thing YOU Need To Do If Your Dog Is Afraid Of Thunder Or Loud Noises. (And how your actions could make this behavior worse.) This is just some of what you'll learn in my newest book, The Amazing Dog Training Man's Ultimate Guide To Dogs, 40 Lessons On Training, Behavior, Nutrition and More.
Impact of Tectonic Activity on Ancient Civilizations
Impact of Tectonic Activity on Ancient Civilizations: Recurrent Shakeups, Tenacity, Resilience, and Change observes a remarkable spatial correspondence of zones of active tectonism (i.e. plate boundaries in the earth’s crust) with the most complex cultures of antiquity (“great ancient civilizations”), and continues to explore the meaning of this relationship from a number of independent angles. Due to resulting site damage, this distribution is counter-intuitive. Nevertheless, systematic differences between “tectonic” and “quiescent” cultures show that tectonic activity corresponded in antiquity with more cultural dynamism. Data of several independent types support direct cultural influence of tectonism, including vignettes of the impact of tectonism in specific ancient cultures. An expectation of change seems to be a feature such tectonic cultures shared, and led to an acceleration of development. These dynamics continue though much obscured in the present day.
