In the fall of 1850 Henry Thoreau embarked upon an excursion into the French-Canadian province of Quebec, with stops in Montreal and Quebec City. His reactions to the foreign country are mixed and ambivalent: he is critical of Canada’s Old World Catholicism, feudalism, and an alien British military presence while most of his references to America and Americans are favorable. But if one looks closely, positive reactions to Canadian society and negative reactions to American society do exist within the essay. A YANKEE IN CANADA is a study in paradox, the paradox being due to a man stunned by his only international experience. In this sense A YANKEE IN CANADA parallels Mark Twain’s INNOCENTS ABROAD in that both authors are experiencing culture shock expressed with all the elements of a mental twilight zone of grays, not just black and white. Over the years, a vast body of literature has developed devoted to Canadian art and architecture. Until now that body of work has not been readily accessible to the researcher or scholar. This bibliography and reference guide identifies and summarizes thousands of books, article, exhibition catalogues, government publications, and theses published in many countries and in several languages from the early nineteenth century to 1981. The work encompasses, from the sixteenth century onward, artists who have come to Canada as immigrants or visitors, native born Canadian artists, and Canadian artists who have lived and worked abroad. The 9555 entries in Volume I cover painting, sculpture, graphics arts, photography, decorative arts and fine crafts, architecture, Indian and Inuit arts, and related areas such as art education, arts policy, and collecting. The entries are presented chronologically under a series of topics and geographical designations. The work is bilingual; each bibliographic citation is followed by a descriptive annotation in the language of the original publication. Volume II presents English and French subject indexes and an author index, which provide detailed access to information on thousands of artists, collectors, art historians, curators, and art writers, and to information on art associations, museums, and artistic activity across Canada. These volumes fill a long-standing need for a comprehensive reference work for Canadian art and architecture. The annotations and the index are in themselves a veritable encyclopedia of art and architecture in Canada.

Canada-United States relations covers more than two centuries, marked by a shared British colonial heritage, conflict during the early years of the U.S., and the eventual development of one of the most successful international relationships in the modern world. The most serious breach in the relationship was the War of 1812, which saw both sides try to invade the other, and both failed, leaving the status quo. Friendship was solidified in the 20th century with the shared experience of the world wars and a close alliance during the Cold War. Canada and the United States are currently the world's largest trading partners, share the world's longest border, and have significant interoperability within the defense sphere. Modern difficulties have included repeated trade disputes (despite a continental trade agreement), environmental concerns, and debates over immigration and the movement of people across the shared border. While the foreign policies of the neighbors have been largely aligned for much of the post-war era, significant disputes have arisen, including over the Vietnam War, the status of Cuba, the Iraq War and the War on Terror. At this time, the Canadian dollar has gained considerably versus the U.S. dollar with as yet unknown consequences.

A first comprehensive synopsis of all aleocharine rove beetle species (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) recorded from eastern Canada, from Ontario to the Maritime Provinces inclusively, is presented. Four hundred and seven species in 96 genera, and 16 tribes are presented and discussed.Tribes and subtribes are arranged in presumably phylogenetic order as it is currently recognized. Genera and subgenera are listed alphabetically. Species are listed alphabetically or in species groups to better reflect their relationships. Species distribution is listed by abbreviated provinces and territories in Canada and abbreviated states in the United States. Geographic status is given to every species as Native, Holarctic or adventive with some species listed with undetermined status - adventive or Holarctic. Every treated species is presented with a diagnosis, including short description of body and description of the median lobe of aedeagus, spermatheca, and tergite and sternite VIII of both sexes. For each species a plate with colour habitus image and black and white images of genital structures is provided to aid with positive identification. Collection and habitat data (often new) are presented for each species, including data on macrohabitat, microhabitat, collecting period, and collecting methods.

This monograph covers the existing results regarding Green’s functions for differential equations with involutions (DEI).The first part of the book is devoted to the study of the most useful aspects of involutions from an analytical point of view and the associated algebras of differential operators. The work combines the state of the art regarding the existence and uniqueness results for DEI and new theorems describing how to obtain Green’s functions, proving that the theory can be extended to operators (not necessarily involutions) of a similar nature, such as the Hilbert transform or projections, due to their analogous algebraic properties. Obtaining a Green’s function for these operators leads to new results on the qualitative properties of the solutions, in particular maximum and antimaximum principles.
