An inspirational guide to lateral thinking when writing family and personal histories.Whether or not there's a heaven or a hell, people will live on in the memories of those they've left behind.On that premise, along with the belief that we all have life stories, philosophies, and influences simply by "having been," to pass on down to later generations-that we don't have to have been celebrities-Gary Kessler offers up a collection of vignettes on his somewhat unusual and adventuresome life and the events that influenced that life.Most of the vignettes, in the form of essays, short stories, and poems, in this collection were entries in writing contests and/or published in anthologies. Others have been added to fill in holes on life-influencing events. The purpose of Of Me I Muse is both to pass on a slice of "who we were/what influenced us" from two generations before the author-to the extent they could be captured and preserved in the eleventh hour of losing them-and an encouragement to others to record in some fashion, the major points of their lives before letting them be lost to help keep themselves alive in the minds of their descendants. The mid-1960's erupted in a virtual volcano of dissent against historical interests when reading ancient authors and texts. Authors were declared "dead," "texts" were redefined, and revolutionary literary theories swept the academic landscape. Concurrently, studies on Paul exploded into new perspectives, counter perspectives, wildly different "lives of Paul," and a general disillusionment that anything at all about the "real Paul"could be known. In the face of such explosive views, I Paulos poses a daring two-fold thesis: First, an "authentic" Paul can be known from at least the letter of 1Thessalonians, just as much as anyone can be known from a personal encounter. For what is "authentic" about authors inhabits particular kinds of texts like this one. Second, Paul can be seen in this letter as carrying on conversations on multiple levels and in a variety of shades, not only with his immediate audience, but with God through earlier authors and texts.I, Paulos is a new kind of commentary-- a contextual and conversational analysis of 1Thessalonians.
Ronald Coase's Nobel work outlined gains by reducing transaction costs and promoting property rights and markets to confront externalities. Countering market failure assertions and calls for centralized government intervention, Coase retorted that decentralized market negotiations could be welfare-improving by promoting collaborative, efficient problem solving, and releasing resources to the general economy. Despite this, his approach is not central to any US environmental law implemented after 1970. Federal government mandates dominate. Where's Coase? explains why. The private objectives of political agents lead to policies that are likely to be too costly and inequitable, despite provision of public goods. Citizens face high collective action costs and lack information to distinguish between public goods and private agent benefits. Examining three major environmental laws: the Clean Air Act, the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Act, and the Endangered Species Act, the book explores policy development and assesses the resulting costs relative to Coase's framework.
