A Quest for the Meaning of Life.An agnostic humanist and a Roman Catholic priest lead the way as Gerald Sliva goes on a journey of exploration and discovery. He examines the questions we all ponder in the secret recesses of our minds: questions of spirituality, sexuality, politics and religion in relation to the Golden Rule. What is the meaning of life? What do I believe? Why am I here? Do my actions mirror my beliefs, or am I a hypocrite? What happens after I die?Part memoir, part spirituality, part speculation and part fantasy, this book is for anyone bearing the label "Christian", and everyone who wonders about the mysteries of life. In his unique conversational style, Gerald handles serious subjects with a caring touch of satire and humour.
Believe is Gerald Allen's fourth book of religious Messaged Poems. If you "Believe" Jesus Christ is our Savior you will enjoy this book.

WHY DO SOME PEOPLE ALMOST ALWAYS MAKE MONEY IN THE STOCK MARKET WHILE OTHERS LOSE? WHAT IS THE SECRET TO PRESERVING AND MULTIPLYING YOUR SAVINGS? The turf is Wall Street, the goal is to preserve your capital at all costs, and to win is to "make a killing without being killed." This memorable classic, The Battle for Investment Survival, offers a fresh perspective on investing from years past. Investors are treated to a straightforward account of how to profit and how to avoid loss in what could be described as the constant tug-of-war between rising and falling markets. Gerald Loeb, one of the most astute brokers on Wall Street, believed that most people will benefit by what they save rather than by what they make. After reading this book you will know: - More about the hazards of preserving capital - What your investment objectives are and how to go about reaching them - That investors are successful depending on their abilities, the stakes they possess, the time they give to it, the risks they are willing to take, and the market climate in which they operate - Ideas, guides, formulas and principles that can than improve results regardless of what an investor might do GERALD M. LOEB was a founding partner of E.F. Hutton & Co., a renowned Wall Street trader and brokerage firm. His market interpretations were featured prominently in newspapers, magazines, radio and television.
The Bargue-Gerome Drawing Course is a complete reprint of a famous, late nineteenth-century drawing course. It contains a set of almost two hundred masterful lithographs of subjects for copying by drawing students before they attempt drawing from life or nature. Consequently it is a book that will interest artists, art students, art historians, and lovers and collectors of drawings. It also introduces us to the work and life of a hitherto neglected master: Charles Bargue. The Drawing Course consists of three sections. The first consists of plates drawn after casts, usually of antique examples. Different parts of the body are studied in order of difficulty, until full figures are presented. The second section pays homage to the western school of painting, with lithographs after exemplary drawings by Renaissance and modern masters. The third part contains almost 60 academies, or drawings after nude male models, all original inventions by Bargue, the lithographer. With great care, the student is introduced to continually more difficult problems in the close observing and recording of nature. Charles Bargue started his career as a lithographer of drawings by hack artists for a popular market in comic, sentimental and soft-porn subjects. By working with Gerome, and in preparing the plates for the course, Bargue was transformed into a spectacular painter of single figures and intimate scenes; a master of precious details that always remain observation and never became self-conscious virtuosity, and colour schemes that unified his composition in exquisite tonal harmonies. The last part of the book is a biography of Bargue, along with a preliminary catalogue of his paintings, accompanied by reproductions of all that have been found and of many of those lost.

The only survivor of the ill-fated ISA mission is now stranded on Mars. Having been designated a bio-hazard by Earth, any hope of returning home is all but gone. She is alone, isolated, and abandoned. That is, until another human shows up in the main colony airlock. However, he's barely alive and soon dies without regaining consciousness. More disturbing though, a DNA test identifies him as a colonist who has already died, several years earlier -- impossible as that may be.Nevertheless, there is only one place he could have come from, the mine on the far side of the Jezero crater -- Colony Two. An outpost they had presumed was long dead. But if he survived, maybe there are others still alive? She now has no choice but to attempt the dangerous journey across the crater to investigate. Because if she doesn't find some answers soon, her only future is to die alone on Mars. About Colony Two Mars: This is the first book in a Sci-Fi series set in a human colony on Mars. The science depicted is, for the most part, plausible. In other words, what's technically possible with either current technology or taking experimental research a step or two further. That said, you won't need a calculator or a slide-rule to enjoy the story.
Now that the truth of the genetic experiments on Mars has been revealed, new missions are on their way to gain control of this extraordinary technology. In the process, they seek to exploit and enslave the colonists--turning them into nothing more than lab rats.Worse, these newcomers are well armed, and prepared to go to war with each other to win control of the colony and its people. But Dr. Jann Malbec has a secret, one that she could use to spare the colony and save the colonists from this fate. However, by using it she will almost certainly doom Earth to a planet-wide pandemic of apocalyptic proportions. Yet she must choose. Earth or Mars--which is is going to be?
When a colonist dies in tragic circumstances, just a few sols before a major terraforming experiment, Dr. Jann Malbec begins to suspect that all is not what it seems. Her fears begin to grow when every attempt she makes to investigate the death is thwarted by the ruling council on Mars.In desperation she resorts to secretly recruiting a recently arrived colonist, Mia Sorelli, an ex-cop with a troubled past, to quietly look into the incident. But Mia has some very good reasons why she left her old life on Earth behind. Nevertheless, she reluctantly accepts the assignment even if it means hooking up with the malcontented, semi-sentient droid, Gizmo. But what Mia uncovers goes way beyond anything she or Dr. Malbec could ever have imagined. As she investigates she begins to suspect that a terraforming experiment may be compromised by those who seek to undermine the future of the colony. Mia must now face down her old fears if she is to save, not just herself, but the entire population of Jezero City.About Jezero City: This is the forth book in a sci-fi series set in a human colony on Mars. The science depicted is, for the most part, plausible. In other words, what's technically possible with either current technology or taking experimental research a step or two further. That said, you won't need a calculator or a slide-rule to enjoy the story.
Commander Scott McNabb, of the science vessel Hermes, is three years into a five-year-long survey of the asteroid belt. It's an excruciatingly dull mission, yet it keeps him far away from the agencies that are chasing him down. However, his fortunes change, along with the other four crew, when they discover a derelict spaceship in orbit around a binary asteroid. Scott's share of the salvage would be enough to clear his name and start a new life. But the ship contains an experimental quantum device, lost while en route to Europa, and ownership of this technology could fundamentally change the balance of power within the solar system. Now that word is out of its discovery, the Hermes finds itself being hunted down by the very people Scott has spent so much time and effort hiding from. If Scott wants any hope of a new life, then he's going to have to fight for it. Yet, after a lifetime of running and hiding, he's not sure if he has what it takes--maybe he really is just one of life's losers. Then again, there is a deep river of rage welling up inside him, born out of a lifetime of countless accumulated injustices, each one inching him ever closer to the edge--and this could be the one that finally makes him snap.
Scott and the crew journey to Earth in an attempt to connect the quantum intelligence Athena into the pan-solar comms network and gain control of Earth based AI. But their shuttle is damaged on entry and lands way off course. Now they must travel on foot through an irradiated wasteland while being hunted down by drones and mysterious locals.
A devastating dust storm. A colony on the edge of extinction.Only one person can save them. But first they need to start a revolution. In the midst of the most devastating dust storm in the history of Mars, the survival of the half million people who call it home is hanging in the balance. Yet for Major Mia Sorelli, of the Mars Law and Order Department, it's just another sol at the office - another sol trying to keep the desperate and angry citizens from tearing themselves apart. But when she's sent to investigate the death of a fellow officer in the lawless industrial city of Syrtis, she begins to suspect that the endless dust storm may not be the only thing threatening their survival. With the help of her semi-sentient droid, Gizmo, they uncover a plot so heinous that her faith in humanity is almost shattered - and the only way for her to get it back, and save the colony, is to start a goddamn revolution. About Surface Tension: This is the fifth book in a Sci-Fi series set in a human colony on Mars, but it can also be read as a stand-alone novel. The science depicted is, for the most part, plausible. In other words, what's technically possible with either current technology or taking experimental research a step or two further. That said, you won't need a calculator or a slide-rule to enjoy the story. Can be read as a stand-alone novel. Xenon Hybrid, the Red Planet's ceremonial head-of-state, has not been seen for many years after withdrawing to an isolated enclave in the far north where he steadily built up a following of citizens seeking out an alternative lifestyle. They bother no one, and no one bothers them. But when an Earth-bound ship explodes on the launchpad in Jezero City, and the DNA from two bodies recovered at the site are found to be an exact match, Dr. Jann Malbec is convinced that they are the product of a covert cloning program. More troubling still is that the DNA is a very close match to the reclusive and enigmatic Xenon.Meanwhile, newly promoted Mars Envoy, Mia Sorelli, finds herself stuck on the planet after her ride back to Earth is now a charred hunk of metal. She begins to get an uneasy feeling that someone may be trying to assassinate her, and Mia's suspicions start to focus on a clandestine group of Xenon's followers. As these parallel investigations begin to converge, it becomes apparent to both Jann and Mia that the peaceful and simple lifestyle of the Xenonists is not all that it seems. There is a darker ideology bubbling underneath the surface, one that threatens to bring catastrophe to the entire population on Mars. But will anyone believe them in time?
Wider than the Sky / Plus vaste que le ciel: Une nouvelle théorie générale du cerveau

The brain is wider than the sky, For, put them side by side, The one the other will includeWith ease and you beside?, wrote the American poet Emily Dickinson in the mid-nineteenth century. The fundamental mechanI'ms governing mental life are now the subject of scientific study. In this book, Gerald Edelman examines a major aspect of the mied - consciousness. How can the firing of neurons give rise to subjective sensations, thoughts and emotions? How can the disparate domains of mied and body be reconciled? A scientific explanation of consciousness must take into account the causal connections between these two domains. Such a theory must show how the neural bases of consciousness appeared during the evolutionary process and how certain animals developed consciousness. These are some of the key issues that Gerald Edelman examines here.He shows that consciousness cannot be located in a specific area of the brain, because it is a process linked to how the brain functions as a whole, to its wealth of connections and to its great complexity. The brain, he argues, is not a kied of computer.Edelman is regarded as one of the greatest theoreticians of the brain, and his notion of consciousness dominates all discussions on the subject among the international scientific community. This book offers the most accessible version of his theories that is available today. The winner of the 1972 Nobel Prize in Medicine, Gerald Edelman heads the Institute for Neurosciences, in La Jolla, California.
