The Salt Companion to Geraldine Monk

This exciting volume combines the diverse talents of an impressive range of writer-critics in an engaged and lively response to the poetry of Geraldine Monk. Monk’s reputation as one of the most exciting and provocative writer-performers on the British scene has been established for some time and this new collection aims to reflect critically on a prolific career which has spawned fourteen major works in the last twenty five years. The contributions within pursue several lines of enquiry beginning with considerations of the early pamphlets published in the late seventies and early eighties, the substantial works of the mid-late 80s and 90s and the major collections of the beginning of the twenty first century. Unsurprisingly what many consider as one of Monk’s finest books, 1994’s Interrregnum (now available in the new Salt Selected Poems) – a stunningly complex evocation of the fate of the Pendle Witches – is examined from a variety of angles concerning its poetics of difficulty, its relationship to ideas of place, nature and eco-criticism, and its politics. Other contributors look at the presence of the ‘eerie’ in Monk’s work; the role and function of children’s games throughout her oeuvre and the ways Monk engages with the visual and the sonic aspects of language. This will be the first collection of critical responses to Monk’s poetry and will be a must for any reader interested in engaging with this dynamic and strenuous writer.

Geraldine’s judgment is sharp. But this case cuts deeper than most. When Peter Selby vanishes after reporting a suspicious encounter, few take notice – until a man is found brutally stabbed in a quiet York suburb. Detectives Geraldine Steel and Ariadne Croft begin to investigate, but what looks like a random act of violence soon unravels into a dark and deeply personal mystery. As they dig into the lives of the victims, the emotional landscape grows increasingly fractured. Peter’s wife is guarded, their daughter erratic and angry. The second victim’s family are cold, evasive, and seemingly determined to keep the past buried. Then a second disappearance throws everything into chaos. With each revelation, the detectives uncover layers of resentment, betrayal, and psychological trauma lurking behind the neat façades of domestic life. Under mounting pressure, and with Ariadne in growing danger, Geraldine must navigate a maze of fractured relationships and shifting motives before the killer strikes again. Taut, unsettling, and emotionally charged, this psychological crime thriller exposes the darkness beneath the surface – and the human cost of secrets left to fester.

Essay aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 1,3, Freie Universit t Berlin (Englische Philologie), Veranstaltung: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, 0 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In ihrer literaturtheoretischen Einf hrung zu ihrem Aufsatz Feminine Knots and the Other - Sir Gawain and the Green Knight stellt Geraldine Heng folgende These an den Anfang: "Because analysis is invariably partial (that is, both incomplete and discursively inflected), traversed like the textwork it questions (and through which it is questioned) by its own unthought and unsaid (...) the impossibility of mastery must be acknowledged." (Heng, S.500-1). Hiermit berf hrt sie Derek Brewers affirmative Analyse von 1976 der literaturtheoretischen Sackgasse: hatte er doch in "Interpretation" 1 festgestellt, that] Sir Gawain and the Green Knight "is self-evidently the story of Gawain: Morgan and Guinevere are marginal, whatever their significance to Gawain.... T]he protagonist is central, and all must be interpreted in relation to his interests."

Maupassant is considered the father of the short story. These eight great short stories concern the dramas and preoccupations of ordinary peopledescribed in a naturalistic way. From "The Beast" about an unsolved murder of a young girl, "Celeste Levesque" about the struggles of poor peasant farmers, to "The Villa of Yesteryear" concerning reminiscences about love of an aged actress, these stories will delight and charm.
