A sinister Gothic tale in the tradition of The Woman in Black and The Fall of the House of Usher 1891. In a remote and crumbling New England mansion, 12-year-old orphan Florence is neglected by her guardian uncle and banned from reading. Left to her own devices she devours books in secret and talks to herself – and narrates this, her story – in a unique language of her own invention. By night, she sleepwalks the corridors like one of the old house's many ghosts and is troubled by a recurrent dream in which a mysterious woman appears to threaten her younger brother Giles. Sometimes Florence doesn't sleepwalk at all, but simply pretends to so she can roam at will and search the house for clues to her own baffling past. After the sudden violent death of the children's first governess, a second teacher, Miss Taylor, arrives, and immediately strange phenomena begin to occur. Florence becomes convinced that the new governess is a vengeful and malevolent spirit who means to do Giles harm. Against this powerful supernatural enemy, and without any adult to whom she can turn for help, Florence must use all her intelligence and ingenuity to both protect her little brother and preserve her private world. Inspired by and in the tradition of Henry James' s The Turn of the Screw, Florence & Giles is a gripping gothic page-turner told in a startlingly different and wonderfully captivating narrative voice.

The fascinating collection of over 200 photographs chronicles the recent history of this charming area of rural Buckinghamshire. Despite being so close to London, Chalfont St Giles has maintained an air of peace and tranquility as it is bypassed by main roads. Chalfont St Giles was a popular destination for Londeres enjoying rural excursion and this compilation follows a popular route the village as described in a 1930s guidebook. Starting at the Pheasant Inn, we are led past the pond and green, through the village and on to Jordans, historically part of Chalfont St Giles parish, and to Seers Green. This comprehensive pictorial record is sure to awaken nostalgic memories in all those who remeber Chalfont St Giles as it used to be and will prove to be a valuable source of information for newcomers and visitors alike.
Abstracts of Giles County, Tennessee County Court Minutes, 1813-1816, and Circuit Court Minutes, 1810-1816
Family historians can hardly find a better way to add life to genealogical records than by reading county court minutes. On these pages can be found references to remarriages, heirs, apprenticeships, orphans, transients, indigents, and the insane. Mentioned here are: the laying out of roads, licensing of officials, mills, ferries, and ordinaries, as well as suits for assault, trespass, debt, paternity, land, and other county matters. Giles County was cut from Maury County in 1809. By this time, Indian problems were in the past, and the area was filling rapidly with settlers. Some families farmed only for a season or two before going elsewhere. Depositions and powers of attorney show connections to counties in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Kentucky. Court was held in private homes until a courthouse was built, which soon burned. These records were abstracted from two surviving county court minute books and one circuit court minute book dating from before 1820. In the absence of census records for early Tennessee, and considering the destruction of many other early records, the information obtained from these three small books is an important discovery for genealogists. This book is arranged chronologically and has an every-name index.
Collected Writings of Giles Clark
This timeless and thought-provoking volume makes available the collected writings of Giles Clark (1947–2019), whose original clinical theory constitutes a major contribution to the areas of analytical psychology, psychoanalysis and philosophy. Clark’s work influenced generations of analytical psychologists, psychoanalytic psychotherapists and trainees in England, Australia and elsewhere. His oeuvre covers important themes such as psychoanalysis as a deeply relational, mutually transformative and intersubjective endeavor; how, as wounded healers, analysts learn the art of recycling their own madness so as better to assist their patients; the clinical treatment of borderline and narcissistic disturbances and personality disorders; and psychosomatic issues as manifest and experienced in transference and countertransference relations in the analytic field. The book also explores the relevance of Spinoza, Santayana, Jung and German Romantic philosophers to analytical psychology and psychoanalysis, not merely in historical or theoretical terms but as a vital resource to guide clinical practice as demonstrated through a series of compelling case studies. The Collected Writings of Giles Clark is of great interest to Jungian analysts, analytical psychologists and psychotherapists in practice and in training, as well as anyone interested in understanding the interface between depth psychology, philosophy and neuropsychology, and in the mind-body problem more generally.
