In the bright morning of his youth Lewis H. Garrard traveled into the wild and free Rocky Mountain West and left us this fresh and vigorous account, which, says A. B. Guthrie, Jr., contains in its pages ""the genuine article-the Indian, the trader, the mountain man, their dress, and behavior and speech and the country and climate they lived in.""On September 1, 1846, Garrard, then only seventeen years old, left Westport Landing (now Kansas City) with a caravan under the command of the famous trader Céran St. Vrain, bound for Bent's Fort (Fort William) in the southeastern part of present-day Colorado. After a lengthy visit at the fort and in a camp of the Cheyenne Indians, early in 1847 he joined the little band of volunteers recruited by William Bent to avenge the death of his brother, Governor Charles Bent of Taos, killed in a bloody but brief Mexican and Indian uprising in that New Mexican pueblo. In fact, Garrard's is the only eyewitness account we have of the trial and hanging of the ""revolutionaries"" at Taos. Many notable figures of the plains and mountains dot his pages: traders St. Vrain and the Bents; mountain men John L. Hatcher, Jim Beckwourth, Lucien B. Maxwell, Kit Carson, and others; various soldiery traveling to and from the outposts of the Mexican War; and explorer and writer George F. Ruxton.

Segregated Skies: David Harris's Trailblazing Journey to Rise Above Racial Barriers
It was 1964 and Black men didn't fly commercial jets. But David Harris was about to change that ... After years of flying B-52 bombers in the United States Air Force, David Harris applied to be a pilot for commercial airliners, an opportunity no other African American before him---not even the famed Tuskegee Airmen---had ever been afforded. After receiving rejection after rejection, he finally signed on with American Airlines in 1964. But this success was just the beginning of another uphill battle for equal treatment. It was the height of the civil rights movement, a time of massive protests as people struggled to end racial segregation and give black people equal rights. As a light-skinned, light-eyed Black man, David was told by many people he could have "passed" for white. But he didn't do that. Instead, he made the bold decision to disclose his race to his employers and fellow airmen. He had experienced discrimination throughout his life, but this was different. He now carried the pride of his family and the hopes of future Black aviators on his shoulders. This gripping narrative, perfect for middle grade readers and Black History Month, follows Harris's turbulent path to become the first African-American commercial airline pilot in the U.S., presented against the backdrop of racial tensions, protests, and the landmark civil rights legislation of the 1960s. It's the story of a man who fought social injustice the only way he knew how---by succeeding. Don't miss Michael H. Cottman's other middle grade fan favorite, Shackles From the Deep, which Booklist called "rich with intrigue and poignant, thought-provoking questions ... Part mystery, part history, part self-discovery, a stunning trip well worth taking." (Starred review)

Women of the Pioneer Trail

Women of the Pioneer Trail

Two epic accounts of the women of the way westwardThe first of these two first hand accounts by redoubtable pioneer women was written by Lavinia Honeyman Porter, a southern lady from a well to do family who was married to a professional gentleman who by her own admission, 'knew nothing of manual labour' and had no idea how to make a living on the plains of west or ensure' the crossing of the continent with an ox team was a successful venture'. However, in the early months of 1860 this family did embark on this epic adventure and after a six month journey arrived in California. On their journey they had encountered everything that the North American continent could offer from wild weather to hard terrain and bad men to the threat of attack by Indian tribes. Five years later, immediately following the cessation of the American Civil War, Miss Sarah Raymond set out on a similar journey (often handling the reins of a prairie schooner herself ) though her destination was Montana to settle near Virginia City. These two accounts, brought together for good value, in this special Leonaur edition are essential memoirs of the years of the great westward expansion during the 19th century, during which approaching 500,000 hopeful pioneers crossed the American heartland travelling towards the west on the Californian, Mormon and Oregon Trails. These were journeys of phenomenal hardship by the standards of the modern world and many left their bones along the way. However, the spirit of the pioneer was irrepressible; their aspiration was a better life for themselves and their families and these remarkable women ably demonstrated they were equal to the challenge of forging an embryonic nation. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
