Harald Lonnecker, seit 1995 Leiter von Archiv und Bucherei der deutschen Burschenschaften und sehr aktiver Mitstreiter im Wissenschaftlichen Beirat der Gesellschaft fur burschenschaftliche Geschichtsforschung, war eine Ausnahmeerscheinung. Im Juli 2023 hatte er seinen 60. Geburtstag gefeiert. Aus der geplanten Festschrift wurde eine Gedenkschrift mit Beitragen von korporierten wie auch nicht korporierten Autoren. Den Hauptteil bilden 17 wissenschaftliche Beitrage zu vielfaltigen Facetten der Studenten- und Burschenschaftsgeschichte. Die Beitrager befassen sich mit der lokalen Korporationsgeschichte in verschiedenen Hochschulorten, setzen sich mit der Bedeutung des Antisemitismus in den Burschenschaften des Kaiserreichs auseinander und beschreiben die Rolle der Alten Herren zwischen 1918 und 1945 sowie von Burschenschaftern in der NS-Zeit, sowohl als Tater als auch als Widerstandskampfer. Der Band wird abgerundet mit dem Lebenslauf und einem Werksverzeichnis Harald Lonneckers.

Throughout the industrialized world, international migrants serve as nannies, construction workers, gardeners and small-business entrepreneurs. Labor Movement suggests that the international migration of workers is necessary for the survival of industrialized economies. The book thus turns the conventional view of international migration on its head: it investigates how migration regulates labor markets, rather than labor markets shaping migration flows. Assuming a critical view of orthodox economic theory, the book illustrates how different legal, social and cultural strategies towards international migrants are deployed and coordinated within the wider neo-liberal project to render migrants and immigrants vulnerable, pushing them into performing distinct economic roles and into subordinate labor market situations. Drawing on social theories associated with Pierre Bourdieu and other prominent thinkers, Labor Movement suggests that migration regulates labor markets through processes of social distinction, cultural judgement and the strategic deployment of citizenship. European and North American case studies illustrate how the labor of international migrants is systematically devalued and how popular discourse legitimates the demotion of migrants to subordinate labor. Engaging with various immigrant groups in different cities, including South Asian immigrants in Vancouver, foreigners and Spätaussiedler in Berlin, and Mexican and Caribbean offshore workers in rural Ontario, the studies seek to unravel the complex web of regulatory labor market processes related to international migration. Creating Knowledge over Distance shows that economic knowledge creation fundamentally depends on, benefits from, and is structured by temporary geographical proximity - that is, by economic actors meeting in person or interacting in a co-present context to discuss business opportunities, problems and solutions are face to face. During the Covid-19 pandemic, personal meetings often had to be reduced or were replaced by virtual meetings, leading many observers to assume a fundamental reconfiguration of economic life in the future as face-to-face interaction may be substituted by virtual interaction through the use of new information and communication technologies. While communication patterns certainly changed during this period, this book demonstrates that the face-to-face meetings the authors investigate across a sequence of 11 chapters with different knowledge-creation contexts are unlikely to be fully substituted by distant interactions - and may even become more important over time. The book develops the argument by systematically analyzing three configurations of knowledge transfers over distance: (1) international community gatherings, such as trade fairs, delegation travel, conventions and conferences, (2) mobile business practices, including intra-firm business coordination, inter-firm projects, producer-user meetings, and corporate expansions/inter-firm negotiations, as well as (3) transnational networks, related to transnational corporations and transnational migrant firms (including new transnational firms/new Argonauts and transnational family networks).

This book presents a radically innovative view on trade shows as knowledge-rich places, where firms learn through observation and interaction with other economic actors, and as enablers, rather than mere consequences, of globalization. Traditionally seen as marketing tools, trade shows are conceptualised as temporary clusters that facilitate the creation and diffusion of knowledge across geographical distances, even in the age of social media. The book is organized in four parts. Part I lays out the conceptual foundations of the knowledge-based perspective, from the early development of trade fairs to modern-day events. Part II analyses specific global developments, focussing on the trade show ecologies of Europe, North America, and the Asia-Pacific region. Part III investigates differences in the nature of knowledge generation practices across international hub shows, exports shows, and import shows in different industries, and investigates competition between such events. Part IV discusses the implications of a knowledge-based conceptualisation of trade shows.
