Glory and Exile: Haida History Robes of Jut-ke-Nay Hazel Wilson marks the first time this monumental cycle of ceremonial robes by the Haida artist Jut-Ke-Nay (The One People Speak Of)—also known as Hazel Anna Wilson—is viewable in its entirety. On 51 large blankets, Wilson uses painted and appliquéd imagery to combine traditional stories, autobiography, and commentary on events such as smallpox epidemics and environmental destruction into a grand narrative that celebrates the resistance and survival of the Haida people, while challenging the colonial histories of the Northwest Coast.Of the countless robes Wilson created over fifty-plus years, she is perhaps best known for The Story of K’iid K’iyaas, a series about the revered tree made famous by John Vaillant’s 2005 book The Golden Spruce. But her largest and most important work is the untitled series of blankets featured here. Wilson always saw these works as public art, to be widely seen and, importantly, understood. In addition to essays by Robert Kardosh and Robin Laurence, the volume features texts about each robe by Wilson herself; her words amplify the power of her striking imagery by offering historical and personal context for the people, characters, and places that live within her colossal work. Glory and Exile, which also features personal recollections by Wilson’s daughter Kun Jaad Dana Simeon, her brother Allan Wilson, and Haida curator and artist Nika Collison, is a fitting tribute to the breathtaking achievements of an artist whose vision will help Haida knowledge persist for many generations to come.

Over one hundred years ago, a group of witches, escaping a second wave of Witch Trials made their way from New England to Whitewater, Wisconsin, known as Second Salem. Others, seeking knowledge in spiritualism and the occult, also made their way to the city and, through their ignorance, unleashed an evil entity poised to destroy the city. Three sisters, the Willoughby Witches, created an incantation strong enough to ensnare the demon. But, magic requires payment and so the sisters sacrificed themselves to keep their city and their family safe. Now, 120 years later, the incantation is at its end and the demon grows stronger every day. Three sisters, three witches, know that now is the time for them to step up and face the creature their ancestors faced and sacrifice whatever they need in order to keep Whitewater safe. Joseph Norwalk is Whitewater's new Police Chief, taking over after the former one was incarcerated. When he meets Hazel Willoughby, he realizes that there's something unique about the gorgeous brunette. Heatedly arguing with him that she doesn't deserve a ticket because she would never park in front of a fire hydrant, and it's obvious that someone else moved her pickup trick for spite, Joseph is intrigued. Not only does she have spunk and spirit, but she also seems to have a secret. Which is another thing they seem to have in common.

An illustrated art biography of one of Minnesota's best-known feminist artists "I have been called an artist who represents both a strengthening influence in society and a proactive agent of social change. I work in specific places in the world exploring nature and place, and I work in my studio, where I explore the feminine psyche and archetypes of women." With these words Hazel Belvo describes the prevalent themes and the significant resonance of her extensive artistic career. She arrived in the Twin Cities in 1970 from the East Coast, where she participated in the art world and activism of New York City, as well as the intellectual communities of Cambridge. She joined the Women's Art Registry of Minnesota (WARM) in 1976 and soon became a strong voice in this nationally recognized feminist collective.Belvo's art ranges from delicate, sensual pencil drawings to monumentally expressionistic paintings, most notably of the Spirit Tree, an iconic cedar sacred to the Ojibwe along Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior. In the first book-length study of this groundbreaking feminist and artist, art historian Julie L'Enfant reviews Belvo's focus on nature, spirituality, mythology, and eroticism during more than forty years of making and teaching art in Minnesota.
