The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Helena P. Blavatsky
Strange tales from a Russian OccultistThe late nineteenth century saw a rise in the number of people who became interested in the occult and among them were a few who became notable practitioners. Aleister Crowley, for example, became infamous as a member of 'the Golden Dawn' and founder of the religion 'Thelema', and the author of this book, Russian born, Madam Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, became a proponent of Theosophy--a religion of archaic wisdom. Her most famous written work on the subject is 'The Secret Doctrine'. Fortunately, for enthusiasts of the other worldly and supernatural fiction, Blavatsky utilised her more earnest pursuits to provide inspiration and background for some highly entertaining tales of ghosts, horrors and weird occurrences. Her single small volume of supernatural fiction, 'Nightmare Tales', was published in 1892, but there remained a small number of uncollected stories published in magazines of the day. This Leonaur original collects all of these short stories as well as a chapter from her book, 'From the Caves and Jungles of Hindostan', which has in the past been included in anthologies of supernatural tales, to create the most complete collection of Madam Blavatsky's fiction ever published.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

The memoirs of Helena Sztukowska written by herself take the reader back to the tumultuous events of the 20th Century and in particular to the desperate challenges faced by the Polish people. Born into a noble family in Vilnius in 1901 Helena took authorship of her own story from an early age. From her active involvement in supporting women prisoners and hiding Jewish people during World War II to her work as a defence lawyer for political prisoners in Stalinist Poland Helena’s life was one of profound impact.Throughout her life Helena faced adversity and danger. Blessed with a fierce determination from an early age she took herself to the front lines to work as a nurse in war hospitals seeing at first hand the death and destruction of war. Later she would lose her husband in the Katyn massacre and would herself be imprisoned three times. Helena’s story also spans her own personal passions - animals, the Arts and travel. She was an accomplished equestrian, a collector of antiques and even a pilot of small aircraft. Her memoirs make evident her humour, her passions, her resilience and courage. They give us a glimpse of another age but the abiding joy of reading them is to see them from the perspective of such a resilient and inspirational lady.

Helena comes to realize that all these people believe the same divine law - to love God and their fellow man. Saying goodbye to the angel, and returning to her bedroom, she looks at the three gifts; they have become a single gleaming gold disk. On one side are these words: 'One god, many voices, one people'. On the other side, a glimpse of heaven. Text is provided in English, Arabic and Hebrew.

Helena Rubinstein: The Woman Who Invented Beauty
She understood women. She understood beauty. And she started a revolution. Helena Rubinstein was born into a poor Polish family at the end of the nineteenth century; by the time of her death in 1965 she had built a cosmetics empire that spanned the world. When Rubinstein opened her first salon in Melbourne, her scientific approach to beauty was an instant sensation. Women just couldn't get enough of her innovative advice on skincare, and her beauty products were constantly sold out. Having conquered Australia, Rubinstein went on to open salons in Europe and America, at a time when women were barely seen in business, let alone running their own multinational companies. For this visionary entrepreneur lived and breathed her work and nobody - lover, husband or child - was allowed to get in the way of business success. Helena Rubinstein was a total original, and her legacy can still be seen today in the methods used to market and manufacture cosmetics. This is her amazing life story.

Helena Normanton and the Opening of the Bar to Women

In this first full-length account of Helena Normanton's life and career, Judith Bourne tells of her fight to join the Bar of England and Wales and open it up to women. The book describes how her ambition was forged as a child after seeing her mother patronised by a solicitor. It tells how the press were quick to pigeon-hole and harass her, leading to disciplinary proceedings for 'self-advertising'. Enmeshed in a world of men, Helena Normanton faced a constant struggle to establish herself against a backdrop of prejudice, misogyny and discrimination - as when solicitors, fearful of the unknown, were reluctant to instruct her, leaving her to take on poor person's cases, dock briefs and those 'deemed suitable for a woman'. But Helena Normanton was a force to be reckoned with. She was not just the first woman to be admitted to an Inn of Court, hold briefs in the High Court and Old Bailey, and (with Rose Heilbron) be made a King's Counsel, but a prolific author, leading feminist and speaker who entranced audiences at home and abroad. Along with the controversies that eternally surrounded her progress and her foibles, this is all contained in this captivating book.

Author's note: For the last five years I have been working on this opera, Helena Citr nov . I cannot get the subject out of my mind. The true story of a Slovak Jew in Auschwitz who had a passionate and searing relationship with an SS-man has so many things to tell us today. It asks questions that make us question all that makes us human. Questions like: What is love, in the end? And, Can love possibly exist in a situation as extreme as Auschwitz? The lesson I have learned from this story is that in the end, the Holocaust was not only about telling someone they should starve, that they should be tortured, that they should be worked to death, that they should be gassed and cremated. It was really about telling someone, "You are not a person."If your life's work consists of telling people, day in, day out, "You are not a person," then in the end it will happen to you too. You, who steal humanity from your victims, must inevitably lose your own humanity. This then is a story about a woman who, though trapped in the darkest of possible hells, would not give up her personhood. It is the story of a man who should have given up his personhood, but instead found redemption in this woman's refusal, redemption in the very thing that he had been taught not to regard as a person.I was born a few years after the Second World War ended, in a place far from the events of this opera. But several times in my life I have had vivid dreams about Auschwitz. Since I saw an interview with Helena on a BBC documentary, she has haunted me.

This is the epic tale of the motor vessel Helena Star. On April 17, 1978, the U.S. Coast Guard seized the aging freighter 140 miles off Washington State's coast with its hold loaded with 37 tons of marijuana -- the west coast's largest pot bust -- worth an estimated street value of $74 million. Drug agents later seized the sleek Joli, a 61-foot sailboat, for its suspected role in the case. A past winner of the prestigious Victoria to Maui sailboat race, the Joli had been purchased from William Niemi, Jr., former president of Eddie Bauer, by champion freestyle skier Mike Lund. The attorney for the captain of the Helena Star provides an insider's unvarnished account of the case from the trenches. The freighter and the conspirators involved were in the news from its seizure in 1978 to its death by sinking in 2013. This drug bust and the ensuing events comprise a true saga about the inner workings of a Colombian-American drug cartel, smuggling on a massive scale, money laundering, the capture of fugitives in Bolivia, suspicious deaths, the lives of high-profile individuals, and courtroom battles in Seattle and San Francisco.
