Traveling down the Hudson River, named by Native Americans the river that flows both ways, you discover people, places, and events that made American history. The cultural, historic, and scenic resources of the Hudson Valley are so numerous, so varied, and so compelling that it's no wonder Congress recognized the Hudson River Valley as a National Heritage Area in 1996. The National Park Service called the region the "landscape that defined America" and characterized the valley as "an exceptionally scenic landscape that has provided the setting and inspiration for new currents of American thought, art, and history." Its political importance was demonstrated early in our history when the river played a critical role in the Revolutionary War. The many streams and waterfalls of the tributaries of the Hudson River powered early sawmills and gristmills. The river and its landscapes inspired the Hudson River school of painters. Sublime and picturesque paintings by Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and Asher Durand depicted this unique American landscape for the world to witness. Industrialists and commercial leaders like William and John D. Rockefeller, Frederick Vanderbilt, J. P. Morgan, and Ogden Mills built their great estates along the Hudson River. The second edition includes completely updated user-friendly design and vibrant photography; heritage site pages that include brief descriptions, contact information, and accessibility site characteristics; and National Park Service Passport Stamp locations with new cancellation stamp pages for your collection. Heritage sites in this guidebook are associated with areas of interest and categorized as must see, best bet, or special interest to make it easy to explore the stories of the Hudson River Valley. Heritage sites are also organized by geography and proximity to make it easy to find heritage sites nearby.

Hudson River Sloop CLEARWATER - The First Five Years: an experiment in social change
The 100th anniversary of Pete Seeger's birth (May 3, 1919) lines up almost perfectly with the 50th anniversary of the Hudson River sloop, Clearwater's launch (May 17, 1969). This is especially significant in that Pete Seeger was one of the principal supporters of both the Clearwater's early development and then its overall program. Though it did not begin that way, the undertaking turned into the first large scale environmental awareness project in the US, helping set in motion today's widespread interest in ecology and the environment. This book is a memorial to Pete, and a testament to them both. The Clearwater's launch was an attempt at encouraging both public recognition of problems affecting our environment and participation in solutions to them - in this case, a single group of people worked together to take on a limited problem - a dirty river. To the effort, they invited anyone and everyone - rich, poor, black, white, scientists, students, farmers, fishermen, housewives, musicians, historians, artists, lawyers, sailors. The way the project developed mirrored attitudes around social and environmental change at the time, and in the process helped move some of that change forward. What the sloop group did or did not accomplish it its early years is what this story is about. Equal to its significance as a trend-setting environmental awareness/activism project was its importance as an exercise in communication, an experiment in social change.Mead-Hill Website: www.mead-hill.com

In 1841, aged just sixteen, the intrepid young Scotsman Robert M. Ballantyne (1825–94) joined the Hudson's Bay Company. Posted immediately to North-Eastern Canada, he spent five years traversing the region's inhospitable terrain by sleigh and canoe. His journal and letters home were so evocative that, upon his return, he was persuaded to publish an account of his experiences. Combining anthropological observations with descriptions of landscapes, plants, and animals, the account was applauded by the Dundee Courier for 'opening up a mine of information to the curious' and 'describing the everyday life of a novel and singular existence' with 'buoyancy and animation'. Appearing within a year of the first edition in 1848, the second edition reproduced here is illustrated throughout with views and vignettes. 'Free from tedious details and unnecessary wordiness', Ballantyne's fast-moving and readable narrative challenges many misconceptions about nineteenth-century Canada and its indigenous peoples.
