Ida Lupino, Filmmaker begins with an exploration of biographical studies and analytical treatments of Lupino’s film and television work as director, moving forward to assess Lupino’s career in film and television with particular attention given to Lupino’s singular, pioneering achievements and her role(s) within the cultural milieu(s) of her time, particularly the representation of women in cinema. Each chapter includes a close analysis of the film or television work with insights drawn from film history and cultural/gender studies to demonstrate that Lupino was a significant directorial figure in the development of film, especially in the late 1940s and early 1950s—and in television extending well into the 1960s. Lupino left her imprint on filmmaking and her canon of film and television work continue to influence Hollywood movie making. The contributors to this volume assess Lupino’s main strengths as a filmmaker—her treatment of narrative movement, plotting, dialogue, gender roles, and uses of tradition representations of men and women in frames of parody and satire. The book collectively examines the successes (and failures) of Lupino’s directorial career, including focusing on the reasons why she initially proved to be so strategic to the progress of women behind the camera.

As young women in the 1970's, Ida and Martha forged a deep bond of friendship before life led them in different directions. Now at the age of seventy-two, Ida makes a leap of faith by uprooting her life in Boulder, Colorado to move with her dog to the Big Sky area of Montana to help Martha and her daughter run a guest ranch. In her new rural surroundings, Ida finds serenity and happiness until she is thrown off balance by an unexpected romantic attraction. In this lyrical novel, themes of unique friendships, emotional entanglements, spirituality, love and loss are explored with perceptive insight in the old growth of the main characters' later years. With vividly evoked settings, rich characterization, and a celebratory spirit, Ida and Martha presents appealing characters facing aging with humor, heart, and what our grandmothers would have called "good old-fashioned moral fiber...".

This book contributes to a welcome new wave focusing on the importance of female filmmakers, providing a reappraisal of Ida Lupino, a cinematic figure of significant importance. Given her ability to move between popular and independent cinemas and her status as both a Hollywood star and director/writer/producer of socially relevant films overlooked by the mainstream, Lupino is a particularly interesting case study. Employing a range of critical approaches, including feminist theory, auteur theory and critical theory, this book investigates key themes and motifs that developed across Lupino’s unusual and unique career as one of the most significant female players in film history. Investigating her oeuvre as actress, director, writer and producer, it discusses Lupino as a complex and important filmmaker whose career, on both sides of the camera, requires substantially more critical attention than it has been awarded thus far.

Jeter Publishing presents a brand-new series that celebrates men and women who altered the course of history but may not be as well-known as their counterparts. Ida B. Wells was an African-American journalist and activist who led an anti-lynching crusade in the United States in the 1890s. On one fateful train ride from Memphis to Nashville, in May 1884, Wells reached a personal turning point. Having bought a first-class train ticket, she was outraged when the train crew ordered her to move to the car for African Americans. She refused and was forcibly removed from the train--but not before she bit one of the men on the hand. Wells sued the railroad, winning a $500 settlement. However, the decision was later overturned by the Tennessee Supreme Court. This injustice led Ida B. Wells to pick up a pen to write about issues of race and politics in the South. Using the moniker "Iola," a number of her articles were published in black newspapers and periodicals. Wells eventually became an owner of the Memphis Free Speech and Headlight, and, later, of the Free Speech. She even took on the subject of lynching, and in 1898, Wells brought her anti-lynching campaign to the White House, leading a protest in Washington, DC, and calling for President William McKinley to make reforms. Ida B. Wells never backed down in the fight for justice.
