School subjects and how they are viewed and positioned within education is the focus of this text. It argues that, as part of rethinking the whole school curriculum, there has been a failure to look at the historical and social background of school subjects.

The first in a three-volume series chronicling the location, history and fate of the many landing grounds, airfields and airports of Wales, this book focuses on the south. Starting at the English border at Chepstow and finishing in Llandovery, Ivor Jones details such diverse histories as the meadows, parks and golf courses that were used as landing grounds by the United States Army’s liaison aircraft during the Second World War, the RAF stations in the Vale of Glamorgan and the long forgotten civil aerodromes of the 1930s that served to give flight to the average man.

Airfields and Landing Grounds of Wales: North

Ivor Jones

The History Press Ltd

In the third volume of the three-part Airfields and Landing Grounds of Wales series, Ivor Jones documents the North Wales region using a variety of photographs, overheads and maps. As in the southern and western regions of Wales, most of the airfields of North Wales are on the coast. The difference between this region and those further south is the size of the mountains and the more extreme weather. Flying in this area was, therefore, always going to be difficult. Nonetheless, North Wales has been home to many airfields from as far back as 1916, when aviation was in its infancy, playing host to Alan Cobham's famous touring Flying Circus in the 1930s and in the last two years of the Second World War providing essential defence for the north-west of England and acting as the main entry point to Europe for the heavy bombers of the US Air Force. Here Ivor Jones focuses on the airfields and landing grounds of North Wales, some of which continue to hold key positions today; RAF Valley is still the main Tactical Fighter Training Unit, RAF Sealand provides vital aeronautical equipment and, of course, the Airbus factory at Broughton produces the wings for every type and model of the Airbus series. Sites such as an aircrew training station at RAF Mona played a major role in the Second World War, and also in the First World War when an airship base for the Royal Naval Air Service was located at Llangefni, Anglesey. This book comprises a mixture of informative text, history, anecdotes and maps, and a wealth of archive aerial shots and photographs.
The Glamorganshire and Aberdare Canals

The Glamorganshire and Aberdare Canals

Ivor Jones

The History Press Ltd
2011
nidottu
The Glamorganshire Canal ran 25 miles from Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff, while the shorter Aberdare Canal ran from Ty-draw near Aberdare to Abercynon where it joined the Glamorganshire Canal. Now much buried by the A470 trunk road, these canals boasted a proud history and enabled the area to become rich and Cardiff to prosper as they connected Glamorganshire iron works and collieries with towns and ports, as well as numerous other local industries, from lime kilns to tin plate and brick works. Today much of these canals might have disappeared but there are still many places worth a visit and much of interest to be seen, from bridges, tram roads and tunnels to lock-houses and old industrial works. Local author Ivor Jones has spent a lifetime in this area and affectionately recalls the glory days of these canals while exploring what remains today.

Routes of Learning

Ivor Grattan-Guinness

Johns Hopkins University Press
2010
sidottu
This seminal collection gathers together many general writings of one of the world's leading historians of mathematics. Organized thematically, these essays ponder the intellectual underpinnings of the field, examine the major topics in the history of mathematics, and recount the bizarre history of pseudomath. Ivor Grattan-Guinness explores how people understand mathematics-the routes of learning they take as they make important discoveries and study mathematical concepts and theories. The essays in the first part of the book discuss the history of mathematics as a field and its central philosophical issues. Those in the next part address the history of mathematics education and its importance to current modes of teaching. In the last section Grattan-Guinness investigates various understudied aspects of math, including numerology, Masonic symbols in classical music, and the links between mathematics and Christianity. This collection includes several essays that are difficult to find anywhere else. All historians of mathematics and students of the field will want a copy of this remarkable resource on their bookshelves.
