Donald married and had ten children - the best known of these is the Honourable John Alexander Gunn whose work creating an anthrax vaccine suitable for Australian conditions ought to be better known. Donald's family descended from Coroner Gunn of Caithness, the first Gunn known to history. In fact, Donald's descendants includes the most senior known Gunn to have always held the surname Gunn.

Die Edition enth lt Briefe an die beiden Begr nder der Ostasienwissenschaft als kritischer Wissenschaften, Jean Pierre Abel-R musat (1788-1832) und Julius Klaproth (1783-1835), die in Paris mit Hilfe der 1822 gegr ndeten Soci t asiatique und ihrer Zeitschrift Journal asiatique ein Mekka der Orientalistik realisierten. Sie sind gr sstenteils franz sisch abgefasst und wurden vor 20 Jahren von Leana Quilici und Renzo Ragghianti sachkundig transkribiert, blieben aber ohne Echo in den Ostasienwissenschaften. Daher werden sie hier in deutscher bersetzung und erg nzender Kommentierung vorgelegt, nach dem Motto: bersetzen ist die genaueste Form des Lesens. Sie dokumentieren nicht nur den weiten Interessenhorizont der Adressaten, sondern geben auch Auskunft ber die Arbeiten und Projekte der Verfasser und geben dadurch ein lebendiges Bild von der damaligen Orientalistik. Die Autoren sind August Wilhelm von Schlegel (1767-1845, erster Professor f r Indologie in Deutschland, der eine Sanskrit-Druckerei aufbaute und die ersten kritischen Textausgaben auf dem Kontinent ver ffentlichte, w hrend er breiteren Kreisen eher als Shakespeare bersetzer, Romanist und Kritiker bekannt ist; der Buddhologe Eug ne Burnouf (1801-1852), der bis heute durch sein bahnbrechendes Werk Introduction l'histoire du buddhisme indien (1844) prominent ist, der Naturforscher Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), der sich keineswegs ber sein grosses Lateinamerika-Werk, sondern vielmehr ber die Hieroglyphenforschung, die Zahlenzeichen in verschiedenen Kulturen, als Vermittler von Arbeiten seines Bruders, zur kartographischen Aufnahme von Zentralasien, zur Identifikation verschiedener alkoholische Getr nke in Asien zu Marco Polos Zeiten und zur Geschichte des Kompasses ussert; sein Bruder Wilhelm (1767-1835), der preussische Bildungsreformer, Diplomat und Sprach¬forscher, bem ht sich um die F rderung Klaproths und agiert als Vermittler zum preussischen K nig; der Begr nder der Indogermanistik, Franz B
