Some people are born to greatness, others have greatness thrust upon them... and some are just drawn like that.As the creator of a popular new comics franchise, Jane Maxwell knows a thing or two about heroes, but has no illusions of being one herself. All of that is shattered, however, when she finds herself swept into a parallel world-one where her characters are real, and her parallel self is their leader. There's just one problem: that Jane is missing.Under the growing danger of a deadly new villain named UltraViolet, the team has no choice but to ask Jane to do the impossible: step into the suit left behind by her double, become the hero that they need her to be. But with budding powers that threaten to overwhelm her, a family she only half-recognizes, and the parallel version of her dead wife staring her in the face, navigating her alternate life proves harder than she ever imagined...

"Bourdieu's work is formidable - the journey is tough. Follow this French foreign legion - take an apple, take a hanky - but take this book". - Peter Beilharz , La Trobe University "A good range of recent examples from popular culture are used to flesh out the material in accessible terms. These examples are deployed very well indeed - rather than being tacked-on illustrations of an idea, they are instead used at the heart of the explanation of the ideas". - David Gauntlett, Leeds University Now considered one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, Pierre Bourdieu has left his mark on most of the 'big' theoretical issues in the world of contemporary theory: gender, subjectivity, the body, culture, citizenship, and globalization. His terms are now commonplace: 'social capital', 'cultural capital', 'field', and 'habitus'. Bourdieu examines how people conduct their lives in relation to one another and to major social institutions. He argues that culture and education aren't simply minor influences, but as important as economics in determining differences between groups of people. Unlike the other grand systematisers Marx and Foucault, Bourdieu has tested these arguments in detailed fieldwork. His range is eclectic, his vision is vast, and his writing is often dense and challenging. Understanding Bourdieu offers a comprehensive introduction to Bourdieu's work. It is essential reading for anyone tackling him for the first time.

The first three centuries of Christianity are increasingly seen in modern scholarship as sites of complexity. Sacred Ritual, Profane Space examines the Christian meeting places of the time and overturns long-held notions about the earliest Christians as utopian rather than place-bound people. By mapping what is known from early Christian texts onto the archaeological data for Roman domestic spaces, Jenn Cianca provides a new lens for examining the relationship between early Christianity and sites of worship. She proposes that not only were Roman homes sacred sites in their own right but they were also considered sacred by the Christian communities that used them. In many cases, meeting space would have included the presence of the Roman domestic cult shrines. Despite the fact that the domestic cult was polytheistic, Cianca asserts that its practices likely continued in places used for worship by Christians. She also argues that continued practice of the domestic cult in Roman domestic spaces did not preclude Christians from using houses as churches or from understanding their rituals or their meeting places as sacred. Raising a host of questions about identity, ritual affiliation, and domestic practice, Sacred Ritual, Profane Space demonstrates how sacred space was constructed through ritual enactment in early Christian communities.

Everybody loves Lucy. And nothing has been more enduring, from the 180 episodes of I Love Lucy that ran from 1951 to 1957 and have never been off the air since, than Lucy Ricardo s deep friendship with Ethel Mertz. Usually finding themselves in zany, hysterical situations, these best friends have always come through it (even with chocolate all over their faces) together. This book celebrates Lucy and Ethel s friendship, by illustrating, through images and text, not only it s timelessness, but universality. I Love Lucy : The Joys of Friendship features more than fifty hilarious images of Lucy and Ethel paired with quotes from the show, Well, of course, I ll need the help of a very loyal friend ; Good friends are worth more than the price of a television set ; What s wrong with good friends harmonizing a little? That s what the world needs more of ; and affirmations such as True friendship knows no distance, The only thing better than a good friend is a good friend and chocolate, and We can always make each other laugh.

"Thorson has a brilliant idea in mixing the world of Alice with a murder mystery. The result is a demented but internally consistent detective story... Although tackling a pastiche of a well-loved children's book is a daunting task, Thorson succeeds beautifully. She deftly captures Carroll's absurdity, wordplay, and unsettling strangeness and rings some changes of her own." -Kirkus Reviews Things that start with the letter M: murder... motives... Mary Ann... Mary Ann Carpenter, housemaid to Wonderland's White Rabbit, misses all the action when Alice drops into town. She has her own problems. As witness to the murder of her estranged father, Mary Ann must go under-underground to learn more about the man she barely knew and the motives for his death. But the more she discovers, the more M-words keep coming. Like magic mirrors, monsters, mistaken identity and a murderer who is the mysterious manservant to the Queen of Hearts. Mary Ann is mightily moved to unmask his malicious machinations, but can she unearth the evidence, expose the killer and keep a cool head?
