Julius Caesar on Stage in England and America, 1599–1973
Professor Ripley, in this 1980 study of Julius Caesar, offers one of the most detailed stage histories ever attempted, focusing upon aspects both of English and American staging from 1599 to 1973. His primary sources include promptbooks and groundplans, letters, diaries and reviews. He approaches the play from four different angles: he examines the texts used in all major productions, and makes valuable deductions about the taste and sensibility of an age from cuts, alterations, additions and redistribution of parts. He explains in detail the staging of the play at various points in time, and demonstrates how sets and costumes, bits of business, handling of crowd scenes and lighting affected its business. He reconstructs performances of the four main roles by the greater and lesser lights of each period. Finally, he comments on the way in which the theories of critics and, in modern times, directors' ideas have influenced understanding of the play.

In this striking tragedy of political conflict, Shakespeare turns to the ancient Roman world and to the famous assassination of Julius Caesar by his republican opponents. The play is one of tumultuous rivalry, of prophetic warnings-"Beware the ides of March"-and of moving public oratory, "Friends, Romans, countrymen " Ironies abound and most of all for Brutus, whose fate it is to learn that his idealistic motives for joining the conspiracy against a would-be dictator are not enough to sustain the movement once Caesar is dead. Each Edition Includes: - Comprehensive explanatory notes - Vivid introductions and the most up-to-date scholarship - Clear, modernized spelling and punctuation, enabling contemporary readers to understand the Elizabethan English- Completely updated, detailed bibliographies and performance histories - An interpretive essay on film adaptations of the play, along with an extensive filmography

Julius Winsome lives in a cabin in the hunting heartland of the Maine woods, with only his books and his dog for company. That is until the morning he finds that his dog has been shot dead - and not by accident. Gerard Donovan weaves an extraordinary tale of revenge that is also a tender and heartbreaking paean to lost love. Narrated by the unforgettable voice of Julius himself - at once compassionate, vulnerable and threatening - it reads like a timeless, lost classic.

Julius Caesar combines in one volume two of Rex Warner's most acclaimed historical novels: The Young Caesar and Imperial Caesar. The latter won the 1960 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction. Together these two novels create one of the most compelling and substantial portraits in modern fiction of Caesar's remarkable life and times. 'A very brilliant analysis of the emotional disciplines, the political subtlety and the moral realism required to secure absolute power. It is a remarkable historical reconstruction.' Angus Wilson, Observer'As a feat of sustained historical imagination Rex Warner's autobiography of Julius Caesar is an astonishing achievement . . . A very wonderful book which grows in the memory.' C. V. Wedgwood'This splendid books ranks with Graves's I, Claudius and with Marguerite Yourcenar's Memoirs of Hadrian as a near-masterpiece of the re-creation of the ancient world. It will banish forever the boredom that often still lingers round one's memories of having to translate Caesar.' Elizabeth Jennings, The Listener

Julius Caesar presents a performance history of a controversial play, moving from its 1599 opening all the way into the new millennium with particular emphasis on its twentieth- and twenty-first-century incarnations on stage and screen. The book tracks the play’s evolution from being a play about the oratorical skill of noble Romans to its recent manifestations as a dark political thriller.Chapters in this theoretically savvy and global study consider productions such as Orson Welles’s groundbreaking examination of European Fascism, Joseph Mankeiwicz’s Oscar winning 1953 film, politically complex productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and shows from around the world which interrogate their own cultural and educational context as well as pressing contemporary concerns such as the reach of mass media. The result blows the dust off a play sometimes considered old-fashioned, navigates its thorny theatrical qualities and revels in those productions which have so excited audiences.

A fascinating, comprehensive biography of the cunning Roman conqueror Julius Caesar. More than two thousand years after his death, Julius Caesar remains one of the great figures of history. He shaped Rome for generations, and his name became a synonym for "emperor"--not only in Rome but as far away as Germany and Russia. He is best known as the general who defeated the Gauls and doubled the size of Rome's territories. But, as Philip Freeman describes in this fascinating new biography, Caesar was also a brilliant orator, an accomplished writer, a skilled politician, and much more. Julius Caesar was a complex man, both hero and villain. He possessed great courage, ambition, honor, and vanity. Born into a noble family that had long been in decline, he advanced his career cunningly, beginning as a priest and eventually becoming Rome's leading general. He made alliances with his rivals and then discarded them when it suited him. He was a spokesman for the ordinary people of Rome, who rallied around him time and again, but he profited enormously from his conquests and lived opulently. Eventually he was murdered in one of the most famous assassinations in history. Caesar's contemporaries included some of Rome's most famous figures, from the generals Marius, Sulla, and Pompey to the orator and legislator Cicero as well as the young politicians Mark Antony and Octavius (later Caesar Augustus). Caesar's legendary romance with the Egyptian queen Cleopatra still fascinates us today. In this splendid biography, Freeman presents Caesar in all his dimensions and contradictions. With remarkable clarity and brevity, Freeman shows how Caesar dominated a newly powerful Rome and shaped its destiny. This book will captivate readers discovering Caesar and ancient Rome for the first time as well as those who have a deep interest in the classical world.
