Illustrated by a Caldecott Medalist, Kate's Light shares the exciting true story of Katherine Walker and her long, heroic career as one of the first woman lighthouse keepers on the Eastern Seaboard. When Kate Kaird immigrated with her young son Jacob from Germany to America in 1882, she couldn't have predicted the surprising turn her life would take. She soon met and married John Walker, keeper of the Sandy Hook Lighthouse. They moved to Robbins Reef Lighthouse in New York Harbor in 1885 and she became assistant keeper. At first Kate wondered if she could live in such a lonely place, but she gradually grew to love life at Robbins Reef. When her husband died several years later, she was determined to stay on. After convincing the Lighthouse Board that she could do the job alone, Kate was appointed permanent keeper of the lighthouse, becoming one of the first women on the Eastern seaboard to be put in charge of an offshore lighthouse. She lived there 34 years and was known for her many rescues. With watercolor and ink illustrations which perfectly capture the salty spray of the sea, Kate's Light brings the turn of the century New York Harbor to life, with a focus on one of its little known but most crucial attendants. There is extensive additional material in the back of the book that includes an About Kate Walker section, photos of Kate and Robbins Reef Lighthouse, and a list of sources. The heroic true story of one of the Eastern seaboard's first woman lighthouse keepers, illustrated by a Caldecott Medalist. Living in the isolated Robbins Reef Lighthouse, overlooking turn-of-the-century New York Harbor, Kate Walker spent her life minding the light, keeping passing ships from running aground on the dangerous shoals. Originally the assistant to her lighthouse keeper husband John Walker, after his death Kate convinced the Lighthouse Board that she was able to manage the hard work on her own. For more than three decades, Kate lived a solitary life, often totally isolated from the mainland by rough seas and dangerous storms. Tending to the lamps and ringing the heavy warning bell, she helped ships avert disaster-- and saved many sailors from the cold, choppy waters when disaster struck. Elizabeth Spires describes the joys and hardships of a life at sea, detailing pivotal moments in Walker's life to show her indomitable spirit, and celebrates the determination that drove Kate to keep her home and her livelihood. Paired with Emily Arnold McCully's atmospheric, vivid watercolor-and-ink illustrations of lonely lighthouses, sun-dappled afternoons, and wrathful storms, this gripping picture book brings turn of the century New York to life. Additional material in the back of the book includes a biographical note about Kate Walker, historical photographs of Kate and her home at Robbins Reef Lighthouse, reproductions of an historical map of New York Harbor, and a list of sources for more information.

Kate Hume's passion for interiors stems from her lifelong love affair with color and her respect for anything artisanal. Color, light, and texture inform all of Hume's projects to create a distinctive style that is casually luxurious; bold patterns are expressed in rich, elemental hues. Though color drives her design schemes, it is never dominant. For Hume there is no wrong color, only wrong combinations. Hume's inimitable approach to design favors tactile materials such as linen, grass cloth, silk, jute, and impeccably sourced homespun fabrics. Unabashedly mixing different furniture genres, Hume prefers vintage over brand-new, considering for instance the best dining tables to look as if they've witnessed countless lunches and dinners. That is why she and her husband and collaborator, Frans van der Heijden, design their own pieces from sandblasted wood and brushed timbers where signs of age already exist. Exquisitely employing beautifully crafted furniture, intriguing objects, engaging color schemes, and seductive, ambient lighting, Hume consistently demonstrates her mastery of eclectic, warm, and sophisticated design.

Kate's Path is Vivian McDermott's touching novel about one woman's search for stability, happiness, and family-with a bit of Montana history thrown in. Kate's life crumbles when her husband, Charlie, dies in a tragic accident-and in the depths of that grief, she finds out that she's pregnant. She packs up the pieces of her life and moves back home with her parents. Just before Karly, Kate's daughter, turns two, Kate decides to move to the city to finish her education. There, Kate meets Amanda, another single mother looking for a buoy in the storm. Alone and desperate for support, they hatch a plan that sounds crazy: What if they team up and form a household for their two baby girls? They combine their lives and their resources, and the next twenty years pass in peace and prosperity. Now, with their daughters moving out and Amanda's recent engagement, Kate plans a trip to fend off the sadness of an empty nest: cycling across the state of Montana. Over the course of her journey, Kate will meet new people and learn new things-but she'll also have to face her past, including the in-laws she lost along with Charlie.
