Would You Like Some Salad with Your Ranch?: How to survive the Customers, the Coworkers, the Kitchen, and the Managers
Starting with the author's background in the restaurant industry, Would You Like Some Salad with Your Ranch? takes a sassy, blunt, sarcastic look at the four main groups of people that servers interact with: customers, coworkers, kitchen workers, and managers. Each group is broken into common situations and character types that almost every server has encountered, revealing that servers do much more than bring out food. They test their patience on People with a Special Diet and their memorization skills on Big Parties. They ward off The Sexual Creepers and play nice with The Insufferably Bitchy Bartender. Along the way, servers learn useful life skills, such as how to reign in The Regulars, how to cope with The Crazy Prep Cook, and how not to be That Couple with the Baby. Aiming to give servers and other industry workers a laugh in an often demoralizing and thankless field, Would You Like Some Salad with Your Ranch? is the perfect summary of the trials of restaurant life.

Self doubt is the most defeating prophecy one can have. Even though I was a successful athlete and above average student, I didn't always feel like I was the best I could be. I lacked self confidence. Hence, I started taking medication that was supposed to help this, but in the long run it gave me more serious health issues to deal with. Years later, I have stopped taking the medication with a doctor's supervision. At this point, I have re-discovered who I am without the medication. Through years of journaling the good times and the bad, I have developed into someone who truly loves herself and believes in her own beauty and strength. This book is a collection of those journal entries and memoirs. Some are small pieces of wisdom or an inspirational quote that I leaned on to help me overcome a particular challenge. Others are reflections of my inner emotions and thoughts that reflect my honest self at that time. Personal growth and transformation have always been important to me and I hope this book can be helpful to others who care about the same things. I know we can all relate to times of struggle and finding the strength to continue. It is my goal to shed some light and give hope to the world around me.

Through the tangled branches of life, Kelsey Day's second collection of poetry, rootlines, emerges as a testament to embracing the unknown. The collection blurs the lines between the human and non-human world, colonial perceptions of "nature," and pays testimony to the Appalachian mountains that have long been abused by the fossil fuel industry. Day's lyrical and impassioned voice invites readers into the solace of these conversations. Both literary and accessible, rootlines is a collection about place, risk, and grief - about the roots we grow from and the branches we reach with. These are poems grounded in place; it is therefore essential to recognize that southern Appalachia as we know it today was built on stolen land. Godstruck: Seven Women's Unexpected Journeys to Religious Conversion
A candid, thought-provoking exploration of contemporary women's experiences of religious conversion and the relationship between faith and fulfillment in our time Religious involvement has been declining in the West for decades--and, though men have historically outnumbered women among the disaffiliated in the U.S., a greater share of the young adults leaving religion today are women. A young, secular Kelsey Osgood would have been surprised to hear that she would be among those moving in the opposite direction. And yet, after the conversion to Orthodox Judaism that transformed her life, she began to wonder about the other contemporary women who, like her, had been startled to find a home in organized religion. In Godstruck, she profiles six other converts--some raised firmly atheist, others agnostic or religious--navigating independent paths to religious devotion. From Angela, a data-driven writer and journalist who finds herself drawn to Quaker meetings, to Hana, whose conversion to Islam leads her halfway around the world, to Christina, whose Amish faith transforms her relationship to modernity, these women's unexpected revelations introduce them to new and sometimes radically different ways of living. Along the way, Osgood charts a fascinating course through a wide range of cultural references--from Saint Augustine, Simone Weil, and Tolstoy to desert hermits, Alcoholics Anonymous, and contemporary feminism--to explore some of our attempts to understand and cope with the mysteries of life and the human condition. Driven by a profound curiosity and anchored by intimate reporting, Godstruck is a provocative, insightful, and refreshingly nuanced exploration of both the joys and the challenges of faith that reveals what these seekers can teach all of us about modern life and our own searches for meaning.
