Psychoanalytic Participation

Psychoanalytic Participation

Kenneth A Frank

Analytic Press,U.S.

In Psychoanalytic Participation: Action, Interaction, and Integration, Kenneth Frank argues that the gulf between analysis and what he terms "action-oriented" or cognitive-behavioral techniques is anachronistic and has unnecessarily limited the repertoire of analytically oriented clinicians. In point of fact, action-oriented and even cognitive-behavioral techniques may be employed in ways that are consistent with the analytic goal of promoting profound personality change, and so may be profitably incorporated into analytic treatments. Anchoring his discussion in a contemporary two-person model of psychoanalysis, Frank clarifies and extends the shift toward analyst participation that has developed within recent relational theorizing. On the basis of this orientation, which calls attention to the therapeutic importance of the real qualities of the analyst and of the analytic relationship, Frank sets forth a pragmatic analytic approach that balances traditional "process" elements with patients' problem-solving and outside progress in realizing life goals. By letting themselves be known by their patients and by participating intensively and actively in their treatment, analysts as analysts can help patients shape new and adaptive behaviors in their daily lives. It is the participatory possibilities growing out of a contemporary relational perspective that provide the ground for a rapprochement between psychoanalysis and cognitive-behavior therapy. To this end, Frank presents numerous examples of how action-oriented, cognitive-behavioral principles and techniques can be used to potentiate and accelerate the analytic process. At once scholarly and exploratory, pragmatic and visionary, Psychoanalytic Participation helps shepherd psychoanalysis into the 21st century while making psychoanalytic wisdom - both traditional and contemporary - available to the broad community of psychotherapists appreciative of the usefulness of cognitive-behavioral treatment strategies.

Methods in Protein Sequence Analysis -1986 brings together reports of the most recent methodology available to protein chemists for studying the molecular detail of proteins. The papers in this volume constitute the proceedings of the Sixth International Conference on Methods in Protein Sequence Analysis, which was held at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington on August 17-21, 1986. This series of conferences has taken place during a period when new techniques in protein chemistry and molecular biology have enabled not only exploration of the control of protein function, but also deduction of the genetic origin of proteins, and labo ratory generation of rare protein molecules for therapeu tic and commercial use. The current reports are focused on the means by which experimental questions can be answered rather than on the biological implications in specific systems. The scope of the meeting was quite broad, empha sizing microanalytical techniques and the relative merits of DNA sequencing, mass spectrometry and more tradi tional degradation techniques. A highlight of the meeting was the Qrowing awareness of the role of mass spec trometry In the analysis of proteins. The complementarity of protein sequencing and DNA sequencing techniques was apparent throughout the discussions and several papers dealt with the strategy of obtaining sequence in formation from small amounts of protein in order that ap propriate oligonucleotide probes could be constructed and the encoding nucleic acids se. quenced and manipu lated.
In Peril on the Sea: The Forgotten Story of the William & Mary Shipwreck
IntroductionKenneth SchaafOur life's journey sometimes takes us to places we never intended to go. We set our destination, establish our route, and make our reservations. But then the unexpected occurs, there is a delay, an accident, a reroute, a complete change of plans. This certainly was the case for a hapless band of Dutch travelers on their trip to America during the late winter and spring of 1853. A few turned back before it began. Others would soon regret not having done likewise. But like many journeys, once begun, there are few opportunities to go back or start over.It is through a rich collection of found journals, letters, personal papers, nineteenth-century maps and nautical charts, period travel literature, and a host of newspaper accounts from both sides of the Atlantic that we follow a group of emigrant travelers on their perilous voyage, from their tightly woven Frisian heritage into a new American tapestry.Accounts of life journeys have been around for as long as our race has felt compelled to move from one location to another, as in the Biblical account of the wanderings of the children of Israel, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Longfellow's Tales of the Wayside Inn, and even our contemporary travelogues. For the duration of the journey, there is an intersection of lives, a cultural exchange, a common shared experience. Then, suddenly, the trip is over, our travelers go in different directions, and their stories, repeated less and less often, are soon forgotten. In Peter H. Wood's thorough study of Winslow Homer's painting, "Gulf Stream," he wrote, "There is no older or richer artistic image than that of a boat and its occupants at the mercy of the mighty sea." With that analogy, he went on to suggest, "We are each lost at sea in the modern world; we are ignored by remote ships and buffeted by passing squalls, and we have as much hope of controlling our fearful destiny as Homer's] luckless mariner . . . it will take Divine Providence to save us."You and I are on our once-only life journey, traveling through time over unfamiliar seas. Our experiences, though common to all, are our adventures, our challenges. Although we sometimes think we are better equipped than generations past to handle what may come, our twenty-first century intellect and technology still appear inadequate to safely see us through what we are presented in life. We make choices along the way, and we like to believe we are in control. But where we begin, when, and with whom, are not of our volition. Our Creator, in His wisdom and knowledge, has determined the where, when, how, and with whom. Like the band of Frisian travelers who left their homes so many years ago, we are called to trust Him to pilot us through the journey, from start to finish.Jacob E. NyenhuisEditor-in-Chief, Van Raalte PressRelying on broad reading and focused research, Kenneth Schaaf constructs a narrative that is part detective story, part drama, and part character study as he recounts the fate of ninety-two Frisians who set out for America in 1853. He draws upon maps and charts, personal journals, letters, shipping schedules, brief newspaper accounts, and interviews with descendants of the survivors, but he also learned the process of ship building and the history of the development of the British railway in the 1830s and 1840s, studied a painting of Liverpool from that era, and traced the lives of each of the crew members and passengers. At once individual and universal, In Peril on the Sea should appeal to a broad audience. The epilogue, appendix, bibliography and index also provide invaluable detail for genealogists and scholars.Robert P. SwierengaEighty-six Frisians boarded the William & Mary, en route to America. After weeks of sailing, they found themselves abandoned at sea by captain and crew aboard their sinking vessel. Readers interested in transatlantic passages under sail will not be able to put this book down.
Electronic Labelling for Hauptwerk Organs
This book is part of the CORE COMPONENT KIT for the Electronic Stop Labelling project for Hauptwerk Organ owners and builders. It describes how to equip your Hauptwerk Organ with Electronic Labels, which are usually a very expensive option for such instruments. This project is not cheap, but it is much lower cost than many many others. Using this design, even the largest organs will have all stops (and couplers if you wish) labelled within less than a second of their loading into Hauptwerk. The book is liberally illustrated with diagrams and photographs to help you build confidently and with 100% success. The Core Components are available from KASpencer. Some of the other components can also be supplied. There is also the offer of a partial construction service for those who may not feel able to build their own. IMPORTANT NOTE: There will be, from time to time, updates to aspects of this project, including the Software, Documentation and other parts of the design. Please ensure that you are set up to receive details of the updates: use the email address given in this publication to register your interest in the receipt of updates. Such registration will ensure that you can also get support should you encounter problems with construction or configuration of your project.

Children's Defensive Mindset

Children's Defensive Mindset

The primary psychological process leading aggressive children to grow into dysfunctional adults is a defensive mindset, which encompasses a pattern of deviant social information processing steps, including hypervigilance to threat; hostile attributional biases; psychophysiological reactivity, experience of rage and testosterone release (in males); aggressive problem-solving styles; aggressogenic decision-making biases; and deficient behavioral skills. These processes are acquired in childhood and predict adult maladjustment outcomes, including incarceration and premature death. The antecedents of defensive mindset lie in early childhood experiences of trauma and threat. The Fast Track (FT) intervention was designed to improve social competence in aggressive children. A randomized controlled trial demonstrated that FT is effective in preventing externalizing psychopathology; the primary mediating factor is the reduction of defensive mindset processes. This Element concludes with insights that defensive mindset might also explain dysfunction in other realms, including school culture, parenting, marriage, the workplace, intergroup relationships, politics, and international relations.
