Kent Ohio's Fishing, Fishing Tackle, and Outdoor History
Kent, Ohio has a long history of outdoor heritage. It began many years after the foundation of Portage County. With the first settler who arrived in 1798, European settlers brought their traditions and moved into the region. They took an adventure that ultimately led to many communities being born. Portage County was formed out of the Trumbull County in 1807. Franklin Mills, Kent, Ravenna, and many other villages and cities grew within the next 100 years. In the last 100 years, many conservation and outdoor leaders have stepped up in Ohio. This book focuses on Kent, Ohio's fishing, fishing tackle, and outdoor history. As part of this history, fishing and outdoor leaders have participated in this heritage including: the Kent family, Davey family, Richard "Dick" Kotis, William M. Gressard, and the Kent State University. It includes stories on the Fageol legacy and Dan Arena. This book also explores history of fishing tackle manufacturing in the county which includes the Fred A. Pardee and Samuel H. Friend companies, the Schumann Fly Fish Kit Company, and the Barney Fish Lure Company, Incorporated.

'Shrieking from the clouds, the Stukas achieved the measure of surprise they needed. The accuracy of the raid was good. Every runway was hit, the length of them just bomb craters, rock and earth. Fires were started in all the hangers eventually spreading to enormous proportions. As the operations room disappeared in one large explosion, the Station Commander fell dead with a piece of jagged concrete driven straight through his skull...' 500 Squadron was formed in 1930 at Manston in Kent. Initially recruited from Kent men and women, it became international when war broke out. The Battle Honours are the English Channel and North Sea, Dunkirk, Biscay Ports, Atlantic, North Africa, the Mediterranean and Italy. In peacetime, it won the coveted Cooper and Esher Trophy twice for the best performance in the auxiliary squadrons. Sadly, it fell victim to defence cuts in 1957 when allauxiliary squadrons were disbanded. The squadron may have disappeared from the Royal Air Force Order of Battle, but it will never be forgotten. Its history lies in the annals of the service and the fact that the Old Comrades Association of 500 Squadron holds an annual reunion at their ancestral home, RAF Manston in Kent.

An in-depth overview of Kent's economy, society and politics, and their relationship with Kent's environs over two centuries. Kent is surrounded by water on three sides, close to both the European continent and London: geography that has influenced those who have lived there in countless ways. This book explores their history in this setting from the mid-fifteenth to mid-seventeenth centuries, emphasising Kent's deep connection with Europe. Its chapters, which draw on a wide range of local and national sources, primarily centre on maritime affairs, reflecting the historical and ongoing significance of the sea to the region's inhabitants. These include a bold new description of Kent at the end of the Middle Ages and a reconstruction of the county's early modern maritime trade, including its merchants, both native and foreign, the commodities traded, as well as the impact of migration. An in-depth study also provides quantitative analyses of shipping and of the lives and careers of the shipboard community. Furthermore, there is a detailed examination of the military community of Kent, with a particular focus on the county's coastal fortifications and a chapter on predatory maritime activities in adjacent waters. Overall, the book puts forward the findings of deep research that connects Kent's economy, society and politics with its environs over a long period. As such, it exemplifies how future county studies might be composed.
