"Affections and Domesticities: Writings on Victorian Family Life is a collection of key poems, excerpts from prose works, and full-length texts that explore the complexities of emotional life during the British Victorian period. The material introduces readers to the Victorian idealization of the family as well as challenges to the family's moral authority. The first section, "Domestic Affections," offers a glimpse into Victorian courtship and marriage through poetry and prose works that articulate expectations surrounding conjugal relations. The second section, "Domestic Affairs and Management," features excerpts from a variety of primary sources including etiquette guides, cookbooks, child-rearing manuals, and sermons. These provide insight into the roles of husbands and wives and the Victorian notion of the idealized innocent child who functions as the center of the family. The third section, "Domestic Revolts, Refusals, and Hesitations," uncovers growing discontent with aspects of middle-class family life and traces the emergence of the New Woman, a figure who flouted conventional gender norms and expectations. Featuring material not available in any single text, Affections and Domesticities is ideal for British literature survey and Victorian literature courses. The nature and subject matter of the readings also make the book suitable for interdisciplinary courses in women's and gender studies and Victorian culture. Kevin A. Morrison earned his Ph.D. in English literature at Rice University and specializes in Victorian literature and culture. Now an assistant professor at Syracuse University, Dr. Morrison teaches courses in Victorian love poetry, literary urban studies, and the Victorian family. His work has been published in numerous journals including Novel: A Forum on Fiction, European Romantic Review, and Victorian Literature and Culture. He is working on a book-length study, Frames of Mind, which examines the relationships among Victorian literary form, political thought, and material culture."

The Desktop Regulatory State: The Countervailing Power of Individuals and Networks

Defenders of the modern state often claim that it's needed to protect us-from terrorists, invaders, bullies, and rapacious corporations. Economist John Kenneth Galbraith, for instance, famously argued that the state was a source of "countervailing power" that kept other social institutions in check. But what if those "countervailing" institution-corporations, government agencies and domesticated labor unions-in practice collude more than they "countervail" each other? And what if network communications technology and digital platforms now enable us to take on all those dinosaur hierarchies as equals-and more than equals. In The Desktop Regulatory State, Kevin Carson shows how the power of self-regulation, which people engaged in social cooperation have always possessed, has been amplified and intensifed by changes in consciousness-as people have become aware of their own power and of their ability to care for themselves without the state-and in technology-especially information technology.Drawing as usual on a wide array of insights from diverse disciplines, Carson paints an inspiring, challenging, and optimistic portrait of a humane future without the state, and points provocatively toward the steps we need to take in order to achieve it.

Kevin A. Codd's previous book, To the Field of Stars, has been hailed as a contemporary classic of pilgrim literature and introduced a fresh voice to the world of both travel and spiritual writing. In Beyond Even the Stars, the reader is invited to join this peripatetic American priest as he takes up the Way to Compostela, this time in Leuven, Belgium, and follows it south through much of France. His vivid descriptions of the natural world and the people he meets along the way are delightful, just as his profound reflections on life and death, love and faith, God and grace, are inspiring. ""Beyond Even the Stars is a heartfelt and deeply inspiring book, one that will keep you up way past your bedtime. From it you will learn what the words 'spirituality' and 'faith' really mean, and you'll be thrilled by Kevin Codd's sharing of his adventures with you. When you finish reading it, you'll probably want to read it again. Immediately."" --Mitch Finley, author of The Seeker's Guide to Being Catholic and The Gospel Truth ""Kevin Codd has provided yet another moving testimony to a pilgrimage that has captured the imagination of fellow travelers on the road to Compostela. This is a must read for all who aspire to set out on the way, those who have already made the journey and those who are merely curious to know why so many have made this pilgrim's trek down the ages."" --Robert Mickens, La Croix International, English Editor Kevin A. How to raise Safe, Happy, Successful Children
You are probably asking yourself, "why should I read this book?" The answer is simple: If you want a shortcut to success in any area, you ask experts who have devoted their lives to being successful in that one area and were kind enough to write it all down in a book. If you want golf tips, you read a book from Jack Nicklaus. If you want bodybuilding tips, Arnold Schwarzenegger is your man. If you want to learn to cook, ask Julia Childs. If you want tips on raising safe, happy, successful kids, then I am your man. The inspiration for this book came from the youth pastor that was performing my son's wedding ceremony; he had commented about how wonderful my two kids were and that I should write a book so he could read it to help him raise his kids. I have a son and a daughter, who love the Lord, have never been arrested, or tried any drugs. They both achieved high honors in high school and today both are successful mechanical engineers with families of their own. This collection of anecdotes and tips offers a summary of all I have learned and implemented as I raised my safe, happy, successful children and will help you as you do the same.

Every building administrator must be proactive to accomplish the demands of educating children for the twenty-first century. This entails making ethical decisions, building relationships, prioritizing school safety, and developing excellent communication skills that utilize data as a baseline. As a new administrator, it is very difficult to be an educational leader without having a predetermined map of what and where to lead. Preparing to Be Next in Line: A Guide to the Principalship provides that navigational tool so that every administrator can be successful. Separating the theory from practical solutions, this text can be used as a resource for the novice administrator. The guide is based upon best practice and active research, and will provide new principals with both the theory and the practical aspects that will guarantee their successful tenures as principal.

Breaking Down the Barriers is the story of supervision and intervention in the public schools system. This text gives both theory and theory in action. It allows the practitioner to peruse the research that the practical applications are based upon, and follow the suggestions that are offered for the successful implementation of evidenced-based practice. Bulleted summaries at the end of the chapter highlight key elements of the practice, and the theory it is based upon. Specific case studies are given at the end of each chapter to generalize realistic situations, based upon the research, into a problem-solving format for the reader.

Ten years after the world’s oil went sour and a pandemic killed most of the population, Sam Edison is the chief of police of The Little Five, a walled-in community near Atlanta, Georgia. Those who survived share the world with what are known as hollow-heads: creatures who are no longer fully human. A man and a pregnant teenager arrive at the gate and are welcomed into the town. They begin to settle in when suddenly both are murdered by an unknown assailant. In the course of investigation, Chief Edison discovers that the girl was fleeing a life of sexual slavery, and that some members of the Atlanta community were complicit in the human trafficking network that had ensnared her. In retaliation for Edison’s discoveries, agents of the network abduct the stepdaughter of the town’s mayor. Chief Edison and three companions track the kidnappers to Athens, Georgia, where they discover that the entire city is engaged in human trafficking. By the time Edison has recovered the kidnapped girl, the other three rescuers have been killed, leaving Edison alone to bring the mayor’s stepdaughter home while evading both human and non-human monsters. Against such great odds, will Sam ever make it to Little Five alive?
