A collection of memories chronicling love, grief, and a life lived on and off stage Raised on a farm and educated in a prairie Bible school, Layne Coleman escapes the confines of his stiflingly religious upbringing at an early age to pursue a life in theatre. He migrates to Saskatoon and later Toronto where he immerses himself in the Bohemian lifestyle of the 1980s theatre scene, carving out a career as a successful actor, playwright, and eventual Artistic Director of the Theatre Passe Muraille. While there, his path intersects with that of his future wife, a captivating and glamorous French journalist. Their transformative relationship is ultimately cut short when she tragically loses her life at 48, following a painful battle with cancer. What follows is a raw and bruised account of Coleman’s struggle to make sense of his new identity as a widower and single father. Unfolding through a series of vignettes, Coleman’s memoir takes us into the heart of loss as he wrestles with mental health and addiction while confronting his own mortality and moral compass. Shattering yet hopeful, An Open-Ended Run is an exploration of a life spent in the arts and a man’s search for meaning in the face of grief.

We see in the Passion of Christ our own struggle of faith. Authentic faith is a daily challenge. According to Hebrews 11:1, "faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." On our good days, we may reflect this kind of faith. The problem is, we have bad days. Life and the life of faith are not always easy. For this reason, we are encouraged to gather together for fellowship, study, and worship. We find strength and help for faithful living in the context of the church of Jesus Christ.Sometimes, faith seems like a "two steps forward and one step back" proposition. As Frederick Buechner reminds us: "Faith is better understood as a verb than as a noun, a process than as a possession. It is on-again-off-again rather than once-and-for-all. Faith is not being sure where you're going but going anyway. A journey without maps."We need not feel guilty that faith is not always easy for us. Have you ever been traveling in unfamiliar territory? There is no shame in having a difficult time finding your way. Stopping to ask for directions is part of the journey. Heading down the wrong road from time to time is all but inevitable. The question is not whether we will go down the wrong roads in our faith journey. All of us will. The question is whether we will find the resources to acknowledge our failure, turn from it, and learn from it.The four lessons in this unit highlight the faith struggles of the early disciples. In lesson one, Jesus addresses the issues of faith and practice. In lesson two, we meet Judas, who like us, struggled with God's Kingdom and human kingdoms. In lesson three, the issue of temptation reminds us that our faith journey is a constant challenge. Lesson Four invites us to remember Peter's experience of "faith failure." Peter's failure, however, is not the final word. There is forgiveness.

For fans of the high-stakes tension of the New York Times bestsellers Luckiest Girl Alive and The Lying Game, comes "a brilliantly paced thriller that gets under your skin in the best possible way" (Megan Collins, author of The Winter Sister) about female ambition and what happens when fake violence draws real blood. After years of struggling in the Chicago theater scene, ambitious actress Kira Rascher finally lands the role of a lifetime. The catch? The mercurial Malcolm Mercer is the director and he's known for pushing his performers past their limits--on stage and off. Kira's convinced she can handle Malcolm, but the theater's cofounder, Joanna Cuyler, is another story. Joanna sees Kira as a threat--to her own thwarted artistic ambitions, her twisted relationship with Malcolm, and the shocking secret she's keeping about the upcoming production. But as opening night draws near, Kira and Joanna both come to the realization that Malcolm's dangerous extremes are nothing compared to what they're capable of themselves. An edgy, addictive, and fiendishly clever tale of ambition, deceit, and power suited for fans of the film Black Swan, Temper "revels in its mind games, delivering twist after twist as it races toward a Shakespearian climax. The final page will leave you gasping" (Amy Gentry, author of Last Woman Standing).

From the author of the "raw, ingenious, and utterly fearless" (Wendy Walker, USA TODAY bestselling author) Temper comes a dynamic psychological thriller about two women who give bad men exactly what they deserve. Scarlett Clark is an exceptional English professor. But she's even better at getting away with murder. Every year, she searches for the worst man at Gorman University and plots his well-deserved demise. Thanks to her meticulous planning, she's avoided drawing attention to herself--but as she's preparing for her biggest kill yet, the school starts probing into the growing body count on campus. Determined to keep her enemies close, Scarlett insinuates herself into the investigation and charms the woman in charge, Dr. Mina Pierce. Everything's going according to her master plan...until she loses control with her latest victim, putting her secret life at risk of exposure. Meanwhile, Gorman student Carly Schiller is just trying to survive her freshman year. Finally free of her emotionally abusive father, all Carly wants is to focus on her studies and fade into the background. Her new roommate has other ideas. Allison Hadley is cool and confident--everything Carly wishes she could be--and the two girls quickly form an intense friendship. So when Allison is sexually assaulted at a party, Carly becomes obsessed with making the attacker pay...and turning her fantasies about revenge into a reality. Featuring Layne Fargo's trademark "propulsive writing style" (Kirkus Reviews) and "sinister, of the moment" (Chicago Review of Books) suspense, They Never Learn is a feminist serial killer story perfect for fans of Killing Eve and Chelsea Cain.

On a clear winter night, a young man decides to make a spontaneous escape from his regular life. The book follows the story of an unlikely, spectacular escape of two young people coming from very different life trajectories. Adolescence in Orphalese is a thoughtful and affecting coming-of-age story that resonates with anyone who remembers the teenage days of questioning the world around us, growing a distaste for phoniness. It is a story about finding the way as a young person, trying to navigate growing up, friendship, angst and a weltschmerz. The escapism and criticism in Adolescence in Orphalese brings thoughts back to characters like Holden Caulfield and Charlie, but it does not put a nametag on anything. The book picks apart the nature of the contemporary world surrounding a teenager, it provides breathing room for creativity, critical thinking and a different way of approaching things.

Muiden silmissä he olivat skandaali, toisilleen he olivat pakkomielle. Hänen kirjojaan on käännetty yli kahdellekymmenelle kielelle. Layne asuu Chicagossa seuranaan elämänkumppaninsa, lemmikkinsä ja alati kasvava kirjakokoelmansa, jonka hän aivan varmasti lukee läpi vielä ennen kuolemaansa.
Should America Promote Democracy?

Should America Promote Democracy?

Christopher Layne; Sean M. Lynn-Jones

A central issue in debates over the future of U.S. foreign policy is whether the United States should attempt to spread democracy. After the end of the Cold War, many observers argued that the United States needed a new global mission to replace containment of the Soviet Union. Promotion of democracy is one of the most promising candidates for such a mission. In this text, Christopher Layne and Sean Lynn-Jones present opposing views on this question. Lynn-Jones presents three basic reasons that the United States should attempt to spread democracy. First, democratic political systems benefit their citizens more than other types of system. Second, the spread of democracy is likely to expand the zone of democratic peace. Third, the spread of democracy will enhance America's security and international economic relations. Layne takes the opposite view, arguing that the spread of democracy will not increase international peace. Instead, U.S. policies to export democracy will divert resources from important domestic priorities. He argues that the United States should focus on national interests and not attempt to control policies of other countries. After presenting his arguments in detail, each author offers a rebuttal of the other's view.
