This publication showcases A Hard White Body, an evolving project by Candice Lin presented at B tonsalon--Centre d'art et de recherche, Paris; at Portikus, Frankfurt/Main; and at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, University of Chicago. A Hard White Body weaves together material and nonhuman histories alongside the life and work of three historical figures: American writer James Baldwin (1924-1987); French explorer and global traveler Jeanne Baret (1740-1807); and artist and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). Lin uses porcelain, a material whose history includes nineteenth-century imperial and scientific uses, to highlight fantasies surrounding whiteness and purity, only to subject her porcelain assemblages to pungent organic materials. She thus stages processes of contamination between organic and inorganic materials, creating an unstable sculptural ecosystem. In addition to an essay by curator Lotte Arndt that discusses the various iterations of Lin's project, the publication features an essay by Rizvana Bradley; a conversation between Jih-Fei Cheng and Mel Y. Chen; and a conversation between the artist and C. Riley Snorton. These texts are accompanied by a visual essay by the artist and a selection of exhibition views.

The authors prove some refined asymptotic estimates for positive blow-up solutions to $\Delta u+\epsilon u=n(n-2)u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}$ on $\Omega$, $\partial_\nu u=0$ on $\partial\Omega$, $\Omega$ being a smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$. In particular, they show that concentration can occur only on boundary points with nonpositive mean curvature when $n=3$ or $n\geq 7$. As a direct consequence, they prove the validity of the Lin-Ni's conjecture in dimension $n=3$ and $n\geq 7$ for mean convex domains and with bounded energy. Recent examples by Wang-Wei-Yan show that the bound on the energy is a necessary condition.

In this pointed and resonant project, internationally acclaimed artist Zhi Lin refocuses on the forgotten Chinese laborers in America from an iconic moment in US history. In the nineteenth century, thousands of men migrated from China to seek fortunes in the gold mines of California; instead they found work building the transcontinental railroads. The contributions of these workers are largely overlooked in the history books, their names and stories lost. Zhi Lin's works address this absence and are inspired by his own experiences as an immigrant.Zhi Lin began exploring the history of Chinese laborers in 2005 by following the route of the first transcontinental railroad and making watercolor sketches of the landscapes and landmarks along the way. His work later focused on the Golden Spike Ceremony, an annual reenactment of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. This book will include approximately thirty illustrated works, an interview with the artist, and two scholarly essays.

Lin Zexu may not have destroyed the English opium in 1839. This work suggests he may have made a morphine salt to distribute as anti-opium pills to Guangdong province. In 1839, the emperor sent Lin to Canton to stop the opium trade. He seized the British opium. He did not burn it. He dug three huge ponds and soaked the opium in salt, then added quicklime and let it sit overnight while it separated. He then filtered the result. This repeats a number of simple experiments done by 19th century European chemists using the same ingredients and methods. Could Lin Zexu have manufactured a simple morphine salt?
