Shopping carts: they stand in front of supermarkets day in and day out without attracting any attention. But when they are removed from their usual surroundings, they develop a strange power of attraction. In Berlin, shopping carts are frequently, quite often in nocturnal 'actions,' repositioned, knocked over, hung up, or loaded with curious things. Over two years, the photographer Luca Ellena (*1997) 'portrayed' numerous shopping carts in such unusual surroundings. This has resulted in an absurd artist’s book filled with unexpected stories that we can only imagine. Text in English and German.

Luca Selva Architects – Eight Houses and a Pavilion
Luca Selva graduated in architecture from ETH Zurich, where he also worked as a research and teaching assistant before establishing his own studio in Basel in 1991. Single family houses have been among Selva's chief interests from the beginning as means for research on questions of space, typology, design, and architectural phenomenology in general. Specific topics and problems are investigated for the first time with this type of building, and solutions found are picked-up again and developed further in other projects of varied kind and dimension. Since 1991 Luca Selva Architects have been realising a range of highly interesting projects, including semi-detached double-family homes, a house for an art collector, a house with artist's studio, or a multi-generation home. The new book presents comprehensively and compares nine of these buildings. They are documented with images, floor and site plans, sections, and elevations. The essays - by Luca Selva and Christoph Wieser - look at the single family home as an architectural task and discuss questions of design in the context of historical and contemporary positions. A conversation - between Daniel Buchner and Luca Selva - is also featured.

Luca Giordano (Naples, 1634–1705) was one of Italy’s most celebrated Baroque painters when he travelled to Florence, where his art was already appreciated and collected. He received many commissions, but certainly the most prestigious was that for the decoration of the vault of the new wing of Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the ancient house of Lorenzo the Magnificent which was then owned by the Marquis Francesco Riccardi. The Riccardi family was strictly connected to the Medicis and the decorative program of the great hall, known as Gallery of Mirrors, was centred upon the Apotheosis of the Medicis and several mythological scenes which illustrate the progress of humanity. The exhibition and its catalogue document this masterpiece through the ten painted sketches by Giordano (exhibited under the very frescoes) and circa 30 other paintings from his Florentine period (1682–1685) by the aptly named Luca “fa presto” (fare presto = to be fast).

Starting from the architecture - both physical and historical - of a place, Vitone analyses a personal dimension built up via a stratification of different languages linked to the identity and roots of the place itself. Like a curious, indefatigable traveller - whose spirit lies somewhere between anarchy and nomadism - his work explores the many ways in which places build up their identities through culture: art, music, architecture, politics and ethnic minorities. For the first time ever, this catalogue gathers a rich selection of works created by the artist in a career spanning thirty years, juxtaposed with reviews of the shows wherein these works were originally exhibited, here introduced through essays written by over 70 authors. Text in English and Italian.

An architect without being one, an anomalous designer, a gifted draftsman and collector of objects, Luca Meda (1936-1998) wrote one of the most important chapters in the history of 20th-century Italian design. The world of domestic interiors was his privileged field of action, and the very close, one-of-a-kind relationship with Molteni&C has provided, since the seventies, an example of perfect symbiosis between creativity and business, art and industry. Among the pieces of furniture that have become iconic are the Piroscafo bookcase designed together with Aldo Rossi, the Zim and Ho chairs, the Vivette armchair, the Primafila sofa and the modular systems 505 and Pass. This publication offers an exhaustive portrait of Luca Meda, at long last highlighting the importance and extent of his production - which includes furniture, installations, architectural projects and design objects of all sorts - in the context of a still pioneering season of Italian design, but to whom we nevertheless owe the subsequent success on the world stage. The historical-critical essays dedicated to his work are accompanied by a series of interviews with collaborators and friends who shared knowledge and practice in the realisation of his projects, as well as the re-edition of an interview with Meda himself, published on “Gap casa” in 1983. Bio-bibliographical appendix and a list of works complete the fascinating journey of the volume. Critical essays: Serena Maffioletti, Alberto Ferlenga, Sofia Meda, Nicola Braghieri, Beatrice Lampariello, Rosa Chiesa, Giampiero Bosoni e Chiara Lecce, Dario Scodeller, Mario Piazza. Interviews: Luca Meda, Romano Barchi, Mario Carrieri, Nicola Gallizia, Eliana Gerotto, Peter Hefti, Felix Humm, Laura Maifreni, Bruno Longoni, Carlo Molteni, Diego Peverelli, Richard Sapper, Filippo Zagni. Text in English and Italian.

The canyons and deserts of the vast natural landscapes of the American West (Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Death Valley, Canyonlands, Canyon de Chelly, etc.) and the coal-mining ghost towns of California and Wyoming. A town in Montana whose brick architecture is reminiscent of Edward Hopper’s paintings. Liquor stores, Idaho’s large auto cemeteries, the Bronx and the other industrial fringes of New York City. The sense of distance and the solitude of the wild frontier and the urban periphery alternate between dazzling daytime lights and mysterious nocturnes. This lush book presents 70 colour photographs imbued with clarity and nostalgia, accompanied by short poetic notes as travel counterpoints. A journey on the thread of personal memories which in turn echo literary and cinematographic works. An evocation in images and words of some American topoi, above all the timeless myth of “on the road” travelling. The afterword by Mauro Pala, professor of comparative literature, explores the ancient relationship that binds American literature to great landscape photography. Text in English and Italian.

Senza data (Undated), an exhibition at the Stefano Bardini Museum in Florence, presents a series of works by Italian artist Luca Pignatelli painted on railway tarpaulins, wood, paper, sheet metal, and Persian carpets from the early 20th century. The painted carpets stand out immediately for their size and their link with the vast collection of carpets in the museum. Luca Pignatelli studied architectural composition during the period influenced by the theories of Aldo Rossi and the idea of the sedimentary growth of history. He is an artist able to accept the challenge of large-scale paintings, working with unusual supports on which he overlays his own selection of images, icons of collective memory like trains, planes, machines, and relics of classical culture. This catalogue includes an interview with the artist and an essay by director of the Museo Novecento in Florence.
Luca Campigotto: Iconic China
Luca Campigotto’s journey in China begins with a search for a mythical past and arrives at the chaotic present of the megacities. The photographs collected in Iconic China present an image of the soul of a country in which extraordinary futuristic skylines of cities projected into the future blend with traditions and atmospheres that stretch back thousands of years: the silences and the remoteness of the Great Wall, the archaeological miracle of the unearthed terracotta army, the ancient quietness of the rivers in the south, the dazzling whirlwind of unstoppable urbanisation. Campigotto’s large-format images transform themselves from view to vision: the classic and contemplative look borrowed from great nineteenth-century photography comes to terms with the contemporary world immersing itself in the colours of the urban night. The precision of the compositions – always imbued with references to paintings and the cinema – and a skilful use of light, try to bring order to the vastness and complexity of the scene.
