First published in 1967, this superb collection of essays on trade in the Middle Ages has been a major contribution to modern medieval studies. Professor Carus-Wilson examines:* fifteenth-century Bristol* trade with Iceland* the Merchant Adventurers of London* the thirteenth-century cloth industry (with its highly developed capitalist system)* the export of English woollen cloth* the wine trade. Each paper is firmly rooted in original research and contemporary sources such as customs returns and company minutes, and, in addition, her expose of the dubious accuracy of Aulnage accounts is widely recognised as a classic.

Launched into this world almost naturally disfavored, the author could have easily been the poster child for life's disappointments and hardship. While he was yet in his mother's womb, his first encounter with adversity had already begun to cast a bleak shadow over his life. His mother wasn't aware of it at the time, but the amniotic fluid surrounding her unborn child had leaked into her blood stream, meaning that her life was in critical danger as well. Her only option to be saved would have been surgery, but with her unborn child's condition so rapidly deteriorating, there would not have been enough time. Fearing the very worst and faced with the grim choice of either staying alive or losing her baby, his mother surrendered her own life on the delivery table, so that he would have a chance to live. But the unrelenting forces of adversity were not done with him. At the age of thirteen, Wynston became caught in the throes of a full-blown civil war and once again, very close to losing his life. Amidst the crossfire of a crucible of catastrophic events over which he had no control, he eye witnessed the brazen slaughter of ethnic civilians, severing of human body parts, the brutal rape of innocent young girls and women, and the systematic bombardment of nearby villages. This made it difficult for him to believe in a fair and just world. Bent on becoming the true master over his own fate and no longer its sport, he forged an alliance with the one tool that had the capability to thwart and defend against all external circumstances - even against the more hostile, and cunning adversaries from within. Under the impetus of the often heartrending setbacks, pitfalls, and obstacles strewn in his path, Mr. Wilson's book is an outgrowth of his own accumulated knowledge, wisdom and experience. It represents his own personal quest for survival, self-discovery, and ultimately, self-fulfillment - a quest at which he attempted and failed so often over the years, that he almost lost hope. Now, in all of its radiant splendor, you too can discover the priceless tips and strategies revealed throughout the pages of this life-changing book, "ANTIDOTES FOR ADVERSITY, 21 Effective Ways to Get Through Life's Toughest Challenges".
