This book uses intermedial theories to study collage and montage, tracing the transformation of visual collage into photomontage in the early avant-garde period. Magda Dragu distinguishes between the concepts of collage and montage, as defined across several media (fine arts, literature, music, film, photography), based on the type of artistic meaning they generate, rather than the mechanical procedures involved. The book applies theories of intermediality to collage and montage, which is crucial for understanding collage as a form of cultural production. Throughout, the author considers the political implications, as collages and montages were often used for propagandistic purposes. This book combines research methods used in several areas of inquiry: art history, literary criticism, analytical philosophy, musicology, and aesthetics.

The question of women’s silence within academic settings has received a great deal of attention. And much feminist educational scholarship has devoted itself to creating spaces where women’s stories and experiences can be told. Without a Word (first published in 1993) raises the question of women’s silence from a radical new perspective, lending at long last a theoretical basis and sophistication to this important issue. The author considers the subject of silence from a variety of conceptual and practical perspectives. When does silene occur among women? How does it emerge? What are its complex origins? What are its devastating effects? Lewis also discusses the different types of silence: the one which is an expression of a woman’s oppression and the one which is her act of revolt.Actual classroom interactions, student experiences, literary and filmic depictions of women, and her own personal voice are the material from which Lewis crafts her powerful theory. Intended to offer an understanding of the subject which can help feminists and teachers struggling to change the nature and dynamics of classroom experience for all students, Without a Word dramatizes the issue of silence in a way that moves beyond the mere need for women to speak and be heard. This book is a must read for students and researchers of education, feminist studies, women studies, and sociology.

Intense, brilliant and moving, The Door is a compelling story about the relationship between two women of opposing backgrounds and personalities: one, an intellectual and writer; the other, her housekeeper, a mysterious, elderly woman who sets her own rules and abjures religion, education, pretense and any kind of authority. Beneath this hardened exterior of Emerence lies a painful story that must be concealed. One of Hungary's best-known writers, Magda Szabó here explores themes of love, loyalty, pride and privacy, and the barriers and secrets that govern them.

This book presents successful case studies in Muslim and Muslim minority countries that have revolutionized the redevelopment of idle waqf properties into productive land trusts. The revival of this institution over the last two decades shows the growing optimism in galvanizing the socioeconomic role of waqf by adopting its flexible shariah measures. Innovative ways of financing redevelopment allow Muslims to extend these roles to include new beneficiaries. New uses for these properties include providing services to the community, opening jobs for the majority of people, funding small entrepreneurs, educating the masses, providing health care, and sheltering the poor and needy. Countries under study include Sudan, Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, New Zealand, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Iran. Additionally, the book examines the International Development Bank's role in financing the development old waqf properties in different countries.
