Karl Martell blieb der Nachwelt vor allem durch seine militarischen Erfolge im Gedachtnis. Besonders sein Sieg in der Schlacht bei Poitiers (732) gegen die Araber schuf seinen Mythos vom Retter des christlichen Abendlandes. Zugleich wird dem Hausmeier ein gewichtiger Anteil am Aufstieg der Karolinger zum Konig- und Kaisertum beigemessen. Ausgehend von den politischen Voraussetzungen und der Herkunft Karls verfolgt die Darstellung die Durchsetzung, Festigung und Gestaltung seiner Herrschaft im Frankenreich und dessen Randzonen bis zu seiner Alleinherrschaft in den Jahren 737 bis 741. Die Schilderung seiner Feldzuge, seiner Kirchen- und Missionspolitik und seines Wirkens in den eroberten Gebieten zeigt anschaulich, wie sich Karl Martell den politischen Herausforderungen seiner Zeit gegenuber behaupten konnte.

Endrju Marvell (Andrew Marvell; 31 marta 1621 - 16 avgusta 1678) - anglijskij poet, odin iz poslednikh predstavitelej shkoly metafizikov i odin iz pervykh masterov anglijskogo klassitsizma. Endrju Marvell byl chlenom Parlamenta, vidnym gosudarstvennym dejatelem. Kak poet, byl svjazan s Dzhonom Donnom i Dzhordzhem Kherbertom. Ego blizkim drugom i kollegoj byl Dzhon Milton. Samye izvestnye stikhotvorenija Marvella - "K stydlivoj vozljublennoj", "Sad", "Goratsianskaja oda na vozvraschenie Kromvelja iz Irlandii", "Opredelenie Ljubvi" i "Ob Epplton Khaus. K milordu Ferfaksu".Pervye stikhi, napisannye na latinskom i grecheskom jazykakh, byli opublikovany esche vo vremja prebyvanija Marvella v Kembridzhe. Eti stikhi byli napolneny zhalobami iz-za prikhoda chumy i likovaniem po povodu rozhdenija rebenka u korolja Karla I i korolevy Genrietty Marii. V 1657 godu Marvell primknul k Miltonu, kotoryj k tomu vremeni sovsem poterjal zrenie, v kachestve pomoschnika v Gosudarstvennom sovete Kromvelja, s zhalovaniem 200 funtov sterlingov v god, chto na to vremja polnostju obespechivalo ego finansovuju nezavisimost. V 1659 godu byl izbran chlenom Parlamenta ot mesta ego rozhdenija, Khall, Jorkshir. S 1659 goda i do samoj smerti v 1678 godu, Marvell byl dobrosovestnym chlenom Parlamenta, sovershil dve missii na kontinent, v tom chisle v Rossiju. Pisal anonimnuju prozu satiricheskogo kharaktera, kritikujuschuju monarkhiju katolitsizma, zaschischaja puritanskikh dissidentov i osuzhdaja tsenzuru. Bolshim poklonnikom Marvella byl Vladimir Nabokov. Ego roman "Blednoe plamja" (1962) peresypan tsitatami iz marvellovskoj eklogi "Nymph Complaining for the Death of her Fawn". V svoikh lektsijakh on sravnival marvellovskij optimizm i zhizneljubie s pushkinskim.
