The visit of the Magi, the Sermon on the Mount, the Great Commission: these are only a few of the well-known passages in Matthew's Gospel. Yet it begins with a list of unknown names and apparently irrelevant 'begettings'. The early church may have placed Matthew first in the New Testament because it provides a Christian perspective on the relation between the church and the Jews, an issue that is still important today. R. T. France tackles this and other key issues in the Gospel with clarity, reliability and relevance. The original, unrevised text of this volume has been completely retypeset and printed in a larger, more attractive format with the new cover design for the series. The Tyndale New Testament commentaries are designed to help the reader of the Bible understand what the text says and what it means. The Introduction to each book gives a concise but thorough treatment of its authorship, date, original setting and purpose. Following a structural Analysis, the Commentary takes the book section by section, drawing out its main themes, and also comments on individual verses and problems of interpretation. Additional Notes provide fuller discussion of particular difficulties. The goal throughout is to explain the true meaning of the Bible and make its message plain.

This book is an inquiry into the possibility and consequences of a controlled investigation of the work of one of the gospel writers. Its primary thrust is methodological because it asks how we can identify the work of the final author/editors with any degree of clarity. This study revolves around the use of the OT by the author of the Gospel of Matthew.

The word "gospel" actually means "good news," and the message of Jesus is overflowing with good news for you, me, and all of humanity Throughout his Gospel, Matthew confirms that Jesus is the promised Messiah of Israel and Redeemer of the whole wide world. Jesus is the King of kings and He came to make a way for us to enter the glorious eternal Kingdom of Heaven. He offers us unshakable peace, hope, and joy, and gives us new confidence for purposeful living. Jesus came to show us the extent of God's unconditional and sacrificial love and bids us to follow Him. By studying this amazing Gospel, we will see how the entire Bible has always pointed to Jesus, and how Christmas and Easter come together to tell one epic story of God's love and plan for mankind. We will hear Jesus' teachings, witness His miracles, and experience His life-changing power. Through our time in God's Word, we will come to know Jesus better and, as a result, fall even more deeply in love with Him.

This work is a commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, with the purpose of looking at it through the lenses of the Old Testament Scriptures. Jesus and the Apostles depended on the Old Testament for all that they studied and taught about Yahweh and His redemptive program. It is quite enlightening to juxtapose the Old Testament passages from which the New Testament texts originated, and to see them in their ancient context. The commentary is not exceedingly complex, but at the same time it is not shallow either. Hopefully the work will provoke many thoughts and challenge some paradigms.

Jesus is King. Standing as a central theme of the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus’ kingly authority has profound implications for our lives today—changing the way we view the world, interact with others, and respond to blessings and hardships. In this reader-friendly commentary, seasoned pastor Doug O’Donnell leads us through the first book of the New Testament, highlighting key themes and offering contemporary illustrations for preaching. Drawing on years of pastoral experience, O’Donnell helps us to see how Matthew’s various emphases—including Jesus’ messianic titles, fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, teaching on the kingdom of heaven, and present and future role as judge—all relate to Christ's kingship over all of creation. Full of biblical insights aimed at both pastors and laypeople, this volume ultimately highlights Matthew’s call to all people to worship and obey Jesus, our humble King and gracious Savior.

"A tremendous resource for those wanting to study and teach the Bible with an understanding of how the gospel is woven throughout Scripture." —Bryan Chapell, Pastor, Grace Presbyterian Church The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on every page of the Bible. The book of Matthew paints a powerful portrait of Jesus as Israel’s long-awaited Messiah, the one who would bring God’s kingdom to earth and fulfill his promises to his people. Leading readers through this hope-filled book, this guide explains the biblical text with clarity and passion—inviting us to encounter God’s one and only Son: Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.
