Michele De Lucchi and AMDL Circle Connettome details the connections activated in the design work of Michele De Lucchi’s studio, named AMDL CIRCLE since 2019. Through a suggestive photographic sequence, the book traces the most significant creations of the studio, combined in order to make visible what the designer calls the “synapses of architecture”, meaning the associations of emotions, memories and thoughts that stimulate new creativity. Covering over 20 years of activity, the images reveal a way of thinking about architecture and design in the light of a multidisciplinary, visionary, future-oriented – in a word, humanistic – approach. At the end of the book, which includes a text by De Lucchi, is a chronologically arranged selection of projects carried out in the new millennium, in the fields of architecture, interiors, installations, product design, graphics and research. Text in English and Italian.

The book brings together the research of Michele De Lucchi and AMDL CIRCLE and sets it in a dialogue with experts from different disciplines who reflect on how spaces are designed: a subject that is not the sole prerogative of architects but one that now, more than ever, needs a multidisciplinary and all-encompassing approach in order to have a beneficial impact on the quality of life. What can we as architects do for the world to come? We can use eco-friendly materials, we can adopt the most sophisticated technologies, but if we do not get used to thinking with a sustainability mindset, building the greenest house in the world will not make the slightest difference, because inside we will be continuing to behave like irresponsible consumers. Consequently, we must intervene with a new way of thinking, one born today for the world of tomorrow: through the qualities of the space we can foster that mutually beneficial behaviour that enables people to get along well together. This is why we have created the Earth Stations, visionary architectures developed to cultivate human relationships. (M. De Lucchi). Contributions by: Telmo Pievani, Giuseppe Varchetta, Ugo Morelli, Alberto Cavalli, Claudia Giudici, Mario Alejandro Venerandi, Donatella Caprioglio.

Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition curated by Paola Nicolin at XNL Piacenza, Michele Lombardelli: Piacenza – Los Angeles offers a literary bridge between these two very different cities through the art and poetry publications edited by Lombardelli between 1991 and 2008. Over the years, Lombardelli’s work has facilitated artistic encounters with some of the most brilliant personalities from Emilia, such as William Xerra, Carlo Berté, Mauro Sargiani, Emilio Villa, and Aldo Tagliaferri, as well as with great US poets and artists like Robert Crosson, John Baldessari, Martha Ronk, Dennis Phillips, and Guy Bennett. This network of exchanges and friendships forms the basis of the volume, in which Lombardelli, together with his friend, the poet Paul Vangelisti, skillfully intertwine poetry, visual arts, music, and literature.

Michele Ruggieri’s Tianzhu shilu (The True Record of the Lord of Heaven, 1584)
The True Record of the Lord of Heaven (Tianzhu shilu, 1584) by the Jesuit missionary Michele Ruggieri was the first Chinese-language work ever published by a European. Despite being published only a few years after Ruggieri started learning Chinese, it evinced sophisticated strategies to accommodate Christianity to the Chinese context and was a pioneering work in Sino-Western exchange. This book features a critical edition of the Chinese and Latin texts, which are both translated into English for the first time. An introduction, biography, and rich annotations are provided to situate this text in its cultural and intellectual context.

As a young boy Michele was destined for the priesthood, but he later became a celebrated drag queen and stripper. With no formal training Michele also became a hairstylist to the Who's Who of Johannesburg. The late Jane Engelhard sent Michele to work with the legendary hair maestro Alexandre of Paris at a time when luminaries like Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, the Duchess of Windsor and Jackie Kennedy were his clients. Later when Michele worked as a hairdresser in New York he became a confidant of Truman Capote, whom he met at Studio 54, who was already on a downward spiral of drugs and alcohol Full stop. On his return to South Africa which was under the oppressive Apartheid regime, Michele was arrested for being a gay activist — he was involved in the famous Forest Town party held on the 22nd January 1966, when police arrested 9 people, including Michele for the crime of masquerading as a woman. For this “crime” Michele was imprisoned in the notorious Old Fort. The Forest Town party was a precursor to the American Stonewall riots. Michele was later to adopt the two black daughters of his domestic helper Gloria, Kgomotso and Dineo. Single stop after Dineo. These adoptions were at the time both highly courageous and illegal. The foreword to this book has been written by highly respected, openly gay judge, Justice Edwin Cameron whom Nelson Mandela hailed as “One of South Africa’s new heroes.”

Before Alessandro Michele took the creative helm at Gucci in 2015, the brand was mostly known for its sleek sophistication and sexy hedonism. Despite having worked at the Italian fashion house for over twelve years as the accessories and jewellery designer, Michele was relatively unknown in the fashion industry and the public sphere. All of that was to change when he sent his models down the runway for the 2015 Fall ready-to-wear collection in an eclectic mix of pussy-bow blouses, chiffon dresses, wallpaper prints and a motley collection of accessories, including fur-lined loafers, berets and granny-style horn-rimmed glasses. Michele’s stylistic design approach created an aesthetic reminiscent of the fashion eccentric who wears flea market finds with high-end designer and heirloom pieces – imperfect, nostalgic and maximalist. The new Gucci woman (and man) were intellectual and sensual misfits who are perfectly at home in the glamourous rag-tag aesthetic of a Wes Anderson film. With his inaugurate collection, Michele tapped into the zeitgeist that was yearning for a more colourful and playful design, and a disregard of traditional gender divisions: while Gucci has hitherto showcased its men’s and women’s collections separately, as well as favoured traditional masculine and feminine looks respectively, Michele broke with the idea of a gender binary, ushering in gender fluidity and a new fantastical vision of masculinity. Although his collections were spectacular in their scope (the Fall/Winter 2017 consists of roughly 120 looks), the designs are also a testimony to his ability to scramble signifiers of gender, pop culture, history and time. Referencing and borrowing from philosophical concepts and ideas, such as the infamous Cyborg collection (Gucci Fall/Winter 2019) that envisioned subjectivities beyond the confines of the human body with replica heads or extra eyes on their hands; the Fall/Winter 2016 collection titled ‘Rhizomatic Scores’, referencing Deleuze and Guattari’s influential concept; or the Fall/Winter 2020 menswear collection titled ‘Masculine, Plural’ that referenced Butler’s notion of gender performativity, Michele exemplifies a fashion auteur who knows how to play not only with gender signifiers but also with signifiers of time, culture and species.

Kirjan on suomentanut Elina Melander.Natalia Ginzburg on 1900-luvun merkittavimpia italialaiskirjailijoita.
