Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the United States

Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the United States

Michael T. Rizzi

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA PRESS
2022
nidottu
Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the United States provides a comprehensive history of Jesuit higher education in the United States, weaving together the stories of the fifty-four colleges and universities that the Jesuits have operated (successfully and unsuccessfully) since 1789. It emphasizes the connections among the institutions, exploring how certain Jesuit schools like Georgetown University gave birth to others like Boston College by sharing faculty, financial resources, accreditation, and even presidents throughout their history. The book also explores how the colleges responded to common challenges—including anti-Catholic prejudice in the United States, the push from government authorities to modernize their shared curriculum, and the pull from Roman authorities to remain loyal to Catholic tradition. The story is comprehensive, covering the colonial era to the present, and takes a fresh look at themes like the rise of the research university in the 1880s and the administrative reforms of the 1960s. It also provides a modern and timely perspective on the role of Jesuit colleges in racial justice, women's education, and other civil rights issues, drawing attention to underappreciated Jesuit contributions in these areas. Michael Rizzi draws from both published and archival sources on the history of each institution to construct a single narrative, identifying common themes, challenges, and trends. Through the eyes of Jesuit colleges, it traces the evolution of American higher education and the role of Catholics in the United States over more than two centuries.
Anthonius Margaritha and the Jewish Faith

Anthonius Margaritha and the Jewish Faith

Michael T. Walton

Wayne State University Press
2012
sidottu
Born in the 1490s, Anthonius Margaritha was the grandson, son, and brother of noted rabbis and was perhaps the best-known Jew of his generation in Germany to convert to Christianity. When he became a Christian in 1521, he began a series of writings that were built on his Jewish life and learning but were intended to reveal the defects of his former faith. These writings, including a translation of the Hebrew prayer book into German and a refutation of the faith, The Entire Jewish Faith (Der gantz Jüdisch glaub), are well known to scholars, but Margaritha himself has been studied largely as an ethnographic type. In Anthonius Margaritha and the Jewish Faith: Jewish Life and Conversion in Sixteenth-Century Germany, author Michael T. Walton looks more closely at Margaritha’s life with the help of archival research and Margaritha’s own writings. To present a full picture of Margaritha, Walton examines his life both before and after conversion. Walton details Margaritha’s family history and Jewish life in a Christian Germany, including social customs and worship practices. After conversion, Walton examines Margaritha’s time spent as a Hebrew teacher, polemicist, and paterfamilias and analyses Margaritha’s various works for their ethnographic and scholarly-polemical content. One thread that runs through Margaritha’s life and writings, detailed here, is the importance to him of his debate with noted rabbi Joseph of Rosheim. Margaritha lost the debate and was imprisoned, but he continually referred to the issues raised and defended the correctness of his position in his treatises. Ultimately, this biography reveals Margaritha as a man who converted out of genuine conviction, but whose life thereafter must have been much different from what he anticipated. Scholars of Jewish and Christian history as well as those interested in German history, Hebrew pedagogy, and religious conversion will appreciate this thorough study.

Archaeological Structuration

Archaeological Structuration

Michael T. Searcy

University of Arizona Press
2025
sidottu
Archaeological Structuration is a critical analysis of the theory of structuration and its utility in the study of societal development over deep time. Structuration theory was originally developed by Anthony Giddens in sociology and adopted piecemeal into archaeology. This book takes a closer look at its contributions to new materialism and develops novel ways to operationalize the theory in archaeological research in the twenty-first century. To illustrate the usefulness of structuration theory, archaeologist Michael T. Searcy deploys it to uncover new understandings of ancient societies, particularly focusing on the Casas Grandes civilization in precolonial northern Mexico. Spanning more than seven hundred years, this society exemplifies the rise of social complexity in the Western Hemisphere. Searcy reexamines previous hypotheses about major structural shifts during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries CE, providing fresh insights and updated perspectives. This book not only revisits the foundational influence of structuration theory but also introduces new methodologies to study the longue durée, the long-term historical trajectories of ancient societies. Searcy deftly bridges the gap between theoretical frameworks and practical archaeological applications, providing a thorough analysis of how structuration can address real-world problems through the lens of ancient societal transformations.

Hyperspectral Remote Sensing

Hyperspectral Remote Sensing

Michael T. Eismann

SPIE Press
2013
sidottu
Hyperspectral remote sensing is an emerging, multidisciplinary field with diverse applications that builds on the principles of material spectroscopy, radiative transfer, imaging spectrometry, and hyperspectral data processing. While there are many resources that suitably cover these areas individually and focus on specific aspects of the hyperspectral remote sensing field, this book provides a holistic treatment that captures its multidisciplinary nature. The content is oriented toward the physical principles of hyperspectral remote sensing as opposed to applications of hyperspectral technology. Readers can expect to finish the book armed with the required knowledge to understand the immense literature available in this technology area and apply their knowledge to the understanding of material spectral properties, the design of hyperspectral systems, the analysis of hyperspectral imagery, and the application of the technology to specific problems.
Spaces of Representation

"Spaces of Representation: The Struggle for Social Justice in Postwar Guatemala" juxtaposes a variety of contemporary Guatemalan discourses - literary fiction, testimonio, historical and political documents, and popular drama - calling into question such notions as truth, clarification, memory, and storytelling in the representation of human experience. It analyzes these texts in an effort to further a broader understanding of the dynamic social tensions that continue to exist in Guatemala despite the signing of the 1996 Peace Accords. This book illuminates the contemporary cultural production of Guatemala by highlighting peace and social justice - not as accomplished political and economic goals, but as perpetual motives for social transformation in Central America.

In the past two decades, new modeling efforts have gradually incorporated more molecular and structural detail in response to environmental and technical interests. Molecular Modeling in Heavy Hydrocarbon Conversions introduces a systematic molecule-based modeling approach with a system of chemical engineering software tools that can automate the entire model building, solution, and optimization process. Part I shows how chemical engineering principles provide a rigorous framework for the building, solution, and optimization of detailed kinetic models for delivery to process chemists and engineers. Part II presents illustrative examples that apply this approach to the development of kinetic models for complex process chemistries, such as heavy naphtha reforming and gas oil hydroprocessing. Molecular Modeling in Heavy Hydrocarbon Conversions develops the key tools and best possible approaches that process chemists and engineers can use to focus on the process chemistry and reaction kinetics for performing work that is repetitive or prone to human-error accurately and quickly.
The Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime

The Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime

Michael T. Fournier

In recent years, the Minutemen have enjoyed something of a revival, due to both a chapter in Michael Azerrad's book "Our Band Could Be Your Life", and a feature length documentary film, "We Jam Econo", showcasing the band's legacy. (And having a song serve as the theme for MTV's "Jackass" show doesn't hurt, either.) To date, though, the band's actual work hasn't been the subject of much attention - everything has focused on either the interpersonal relationships that made the Minutemen so distinctive or the sudden and tragic death of guitarist/singer D. Boon. This book shines a light on the band's remarkable music and on this particular album; on their blending of several styles into something that will never be replicated. The Minutemen's body of work is very personal - people who are into this band feel a deep connection with their music and aesthetic. Included are extensive interviews with Mike Watt, the band's bass player, as well as with several artists, musicians, studio owners, and fanzine writers who have been devoted followers of the band for years. The Minutemen redefined what punk rock could be, what punk rock could sound like, and this book will be a fitting tribute to that legacy. (Also, Mike Watt is now working with Kelly Clarkson on her upcoming album, so there should be ongoing interest...)

Based on extensive research conducted by the authors, Reasoning and Sense Making in the Mathematics Classroom, Grades 3–5, is designed to help classroom teachers understand, monitor, and guide the development of students’ reasoning and sense making about core ideas in elementary school mathematics. It describes and illustrates the nature of these skills using classroom vignettes and actual student work in conjunction with instructional tasks and learning progressions to show how reasoning and sense making develop and how instruction can support students in that development.Students who can make sense of mathematical ideas can apply those ideas in problem solving, even in unfamiliar situations, and can use them as a foundation for future learning. Without them, students are reduced to rote learning, often experiencing frustration and failure. But what do reasoning and sense making during learning and teaching look like? Each chapter of Reasoning and Sense Making in the Mathematics Classroom, Grades 3–5 explores a different topic that children encounter in mathematics, demonstrating with actual student work and classroom dialogue how their mathematical knowledge and reasoning ability move through “levels of sophistication” or learning progressions:After opening with a discussion of the nature of reasoning and sense making and their critical importance in developing mathematical thinking, chapter 1 examines how students attempt to make sense of the concept of length measurement.Chapter 2 focuses on student strategies that exemplify conceptually sound reasoning and sense making in the context of multiplication word problems, and discusses how instruction can support students’ growth in this reasoning. The critical topic of properties of numbers that underlie reasoning about multiplication is also examined.Chapter 3 describes how students in grades 3–5 extend their understanding of number to include fractions and how they can build reasoning and sense making for fractions through explorations of different representations such as physical materials, pictures, and story contexts.Discussions on the nature of early algebraic reasoning, including research-based descriptions of this reasoning in children, classroom practices that can support this reasoning, and how algebra can be appropriately integrated in elementary mathematical content are provided in chapter 4.Chapter 5 discusses practices and processes connected to reasoning about geometric decomposition and structuring as applied to arrays of squares and cubes and to area and volume problems. A learning progression for the development of such reasoning is examined, and instructional practices that are consistent with this learning progression are considered. Not just a theoretical discussion, the book also provides specific suggestions for related instructional activities for each topic. Reasoning and Sense Making in the Mathematics Classroom, Grades 3–5 will be a valuable and practical addition to your professional library.

Reasoning and Sense Making in the Mathematics Classroom, Grades 6–8, based on extensive research conducted by the authors, is designed to help classroom teachers understand, monitor, and guide the development of students’ reasoning and sense making about core ideas in middle school mathematics. It describes and illustrates the nature of these skills using classroom vignettes and actual student work in conjunction with instructional tasks and learning progressions to show how instruction can support students in their development of these competencies.Students who can make sense of mathematical ideas can apply those ideas in problem solving, even in unfamiliar situations, and can use them as a foundation for future learning. Without this base of conceptual understanding, students are reduced to rote learning, often experiencing frustration and failure. But what do reasoning and sense making look like in learning and teaching? Each chapter of Reasoning and Sense Making in the Mathematics Classroom, Grades 6–8 explores a different topic that children encounter in mathematics, demonstrating with actual student work and classroom dialogue how their mathematical knowledge and reasoning ability move through “levels of sophistication,” or learning progressions:After opening with a discussion of the nature of reasoning and sense making and their critical importance in developing mathematical thinking, chapter 1 examines how students attempt to make sense of the concepts of fractions and geometric properties of shapes.Chapter 2 discusses how reasoning about ratios and proportional relationships involves deep understanding of the multiplicative relationships embedded in the comparisons of two quantities.Chapter 3 focuses on what it means to call algebra a “style of mathematical thinking” and illustrates how students can view it as a reasoning and sense-making activity rather than as an isolated set of concepts to be memorized without understanding and quickly forgotten.Reasoning and sense making are inextricably linked in statistics and probability. Discussion and examples are used in chapter 4 to illustrate pedagogical practices that recognize and address students’ development of statistical understanding, including some of the misunderstandings that students display along the way.Chapter 5 examines how students make sense of and reason about decomposing shapes, and discusses the mental processes underlying this reasoning in the context of area, surface area, and volume. Not just a theoretical treatise, the book provides specific suggestions for related instructional activities for each topic. Reasoning and Sense Making in the Mathematics Classroom, Grades 6–8 will be a valuable and practical addition to your professional library.
The Limits of Policy Change

The Limits of Policy Change

Michael T. Hayes

Georgetown University Press
2002
pokkari
In this title, Michael Hayes offers a vigorous defense of incrementalism: the theory that the policymaking process typically should involve bargaining, delay, compromise, and, therefore, incremental change. Incrementalism, he argues, is one result of a checks-and-balances system in which politicians may disagree over what we want to achieve as a nation or what policies would best achieve shared goals. Many political scientists have called for reforms that would facilitate majority rule and more radical policy change by strengthening the presidency at the expense of Congress. But Hayes develops policy typologies and analyzes case studies to show that the policy process works best when it conforms to the tenets of incrementalism. He contends that because humans are fallible, politics should work through social processes to achieve limited ends and to ameliorate - rather than completely solve - social problems. Analyzing the evolution of air pollution policy, the failure of President Clinton's health care reform in 1994, and the successful effort at welfare reform in 1995-96, Hayes calls for changes that would make incrementalism work better by encouraging a more balanced struggle among social interests and by requiring political outcomes to conform to the rule of law. Written for students and specialists in politics, public policy, and public administration, "The Limits of Policy Change" examines in detail a central issue in democratic theory.
