Based on a hugely successful US model, the Seven Core Issues in Adoption is the first conceptual framework of its kind to offer a unifying lens that was inclusive of all individuals touched by the adoption experience. The Seven Core Issues are Loss, Rejection, Shame/Guilt, Grief, Identity, Intimacy, and Mastery/Control. The book expands the model to be inclusive of adoption and all forms of permanency: adoption, foster care, kinship care, donor insemination and surrogacy. Attachment and trauma are integrated with the Seven Core Issues model to address and normalize the additional tasks individuals and families will encounter. The book views the Seven Core Issues from a range of perspectives including: multi-racial, LGBTQ, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, African-American, International, openness, search and reunion, and others. This essential guide introduces each Core Issue, its impact on individuals, offering techniques for growth and healing.

Mindfulness-Based Practices in Therapy

Mindfulness-Based Practices in Therapy

Don Davis; Cirleen DeBlaere; Joshua N. Hook; Jesse Owen

American Psychological Association

This book serves as a practical introduction to integrating mindfulness-based practices in therapy, with a focus on assessing whether it is appropriate to use or adapt mindfulness activities to the specific cultural identity or identities of clients. Eastern spirituality has exerted considerable influence on the fields of counseling and psychology through the use of mindfulness-based practices. Interventions can be adapted to account for clients' religious/spiritual identity, gender norms, racial/ethnic background, community values and pressures, personality traits, unfamiliarity with mindfulness-based practices, cognitive flexibility, and individual life experiences. The authors present an approach to integrating mindfulness in therapy that emphasizes cultural humility, which combines an accurate view of oneself (including limits in one's awareness, knowledge, and skills for working with individuals from diverse groups) with the ability to cultivate an amp quot other-oriented amp quot stance, thus enhancing one's ability to work with clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds. By incorporating this client-centered approach, therapists will be better able to align the therapy process with clients' values, narratives about change, and therapy goals.

"The revelers were still reveling, the Inn Keep was still pouring, the stories were still being told. But I knew the truth: I was off to do some damn fool thing." Loch the Bastard knows he's put his foot in it almost from the start. A street rat from the dark, a coin he thought was lost, and the death of his army commander whom he hasn't seen in years, all add up to a mystery he is honor-bound to solve. But when Fall, the boy he is supposed to be helping, reveals that he is a sorcerer instead, Loch knows that he has at last traded "foolishness" for treason. What follows is a tenuous dance between Magic and mystery in a world where the former is forbidden. It is a journey of soul and conscience, of past and regret. And good and evil may have nothing to do with anything after all.

Cats have been our furry companions for centuries, if not millennia. They are mysterious creatures, full of personality, but at the same time aloof and set-apart. They are intriguing and maddening at the same time, and not at all predictable. These are the adventures of Mango and Pumpkin, two orange medium-haired housecats that have ruled their various abodes for the last fourteen years. Their antics, often the primary discussion at family dinners, have at long last been compiled into a single volume: Cat Tales for Aunt Marge. They're quirky, adorable, and at times frustrating; but never boring.
