"Into the Curve" is an exhibition catalogue for the British-American artist's Natalie Clark exhibition at The Container, Tokyo, 10 September-26 November, 2018. It is the 16th catalogue in a series published by the gallery to archive and promote artists in Japan and abroad. The catalogue showcases writings by the gallery director, Shai Ohayon, as well as notes by the artist. The publication features works by the artist and explores the development of a site-specific installation, fabricated using upholstery techniques. The sculptural installation presents Clark's interest and engagement with womanhood and women's empowerment, and seeks to create awareness and discourse about women rights in general, and Japan in particular, following the cold reception the #MeToo movement received in Japan. Natalie Jane Clark is a British-American classically-trained artist, designer and educator. Her current practice is split between studios in the American West and Barcelona, Spain, and includes original sculptures, art consulting, curation, and design. Clark obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture, from Brighton University in England. She came to the United States on a full-merit scholarship, and attained her Masters in Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. She followed her formal training with an Artist-in-Industry Residency at the Kohler factory in Wisconsin and has taught at university level in Texas and Wyoming. Clark's 9/11 Memorial submission was a finalist in the design competition and has been exhibited in New York. Her works are in both private and public collections within the USA, Canada, and Europe. The Container is a contemporary exhibition space in Nakameguro, Tokyo. The space opened in March 2011 to create a site that encourages people to engage with art installations and works, where the emphasis is on curation and the accessibility of contemporary art and ideas to the general public. As the name suggests, the physical space is no more than a constructed shipping container (485x180x177cm), made to measurements of old Japanese shipping containers, housed inside Bross hair salon, in one of Tokyo's most loved and trendy neighbourhoods. The Container invites Japanese and international artists to make site-specifc installations four times a year. Each installation remains on view to the public for two-and-a- half months. Since 2013, The Container also started to publish full-colour, bilingual (Jap/Eng) exhibition catalogues, available online and at the gallery. The space receives extensive international coverage, including ArtAsiaPacific, Artforum, Hyperallergic, Glass Magazine, Art & Antiques Magazine, Dazed & Confused, Blouin Artinfo, Art-iT, Bijutsu-Techo/BT, CNN, NHK, Tokyo Art Beat, The Japan Times, and The Sunday Times, travel guides and in-flight magazines, to mention only a few. www.the-container.com

Natalie's Way" is a hardboiled thriller following a complex and troubled young heroine navigating a bleak moral landscape. With edgy dialogue and a narrative style reminiscent of Raymond Chandler, the novel explores themes of lost love, survival, and self-doubt. Natalie's scathing wit, black humor, and fearless nature drive the story as she navigates a morally corrupt world and grapples with her traumatic past, pushing her beyond her limits and challenging her sanity. The plot accelerates when a conman recruits the brilliant but brash iconoclastic girl, to be a pigeon in a blackmail scheme that quickly spirals out of control. From that point on, she's caught in a relentless chase, running for her life.Throughout her journey, Natalie's razor-sharp intelligence and daring nature are put to the test as she attempts to outmaneuver her pursuers until the end. The story builds to a dramatic climax, beginning in an abandoned playhouse theatre and concluding on a storm-wracked contraband ship. While steeped in darkness and nihilism, the novel offers brief moments of unexpected connections that provide a glimmer of heart. This creates a riveting psychological noir that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, showcasing Natalie's magnetic and increasingly unhinged character as she navigates a world of constant danger. The visceral prose, hardscrabble humanity, and philosophical heft elevate it beyond a conventional crime novel.

Natalie Barney,'the wild girl of Cincinnati', and Romaine Brooks were both rich, American and grandly lesbian. They met in Paris in 1915 and their tempestuous affair lasted more than fifty years. By the end of their lives together, Natalie and Romaine had entertained, slept with, fallen in love with, tutored or tortured a range of figures including Gertrude Stein, Colette, Edith Sitwell, Gabriele d'Annunzio and the ballerina Ida Rubinstein. But among this tumult there was an enduring and loving relationship that supported a liberating spirit of culture, style and candour. In this vivid double biography, Souhami writes with complexity and skill, drawing the reader into a different world and capturing for ever her subjects' extraordinary lives.

Natalie, facing retirement, returns to the UK from South Africa to care for her elderly mother, whose mischievous ways have caused nothing but trouble amongst her three daughters. Unsure about what her future holds, Natalie wonders if she is still young enough to have a life. She reunites with her old friend Maggie, a wickedly cynical veteran of the ‘36-year marriage-gone-stale’ club, who cannot fathom why Natalie would consider introducing another man into her life, let alone actively seek one out on the internet. Especially since, according to Maggie, Natalie has always been a terrible judge of men! But when Natalie meets 59-year-old Richard, she believes she has found the one: a softy spoken, gentle giant who wines and dines her, takes her on a Caribbean cruise, and enjoys time on the beautiful South African south coast with her. But is Richard too good to be true? And will Maggie be proven right?

Throughout her career, Natalie Wood teetered precariously on the edge of greatness. Trained in the classical Hollywood studio style, but best mentored by Method directors, Wood was the ideal actress for roles depicting shifting perceptions of American womanhood. Nonetheless, while many of her films are considered classics of mid-twentieth century American cinema, she is less remembered for her acting than she is for her mysterious and tragic death. Rebecca Sullivan's lucid and engaging study of Natalie Wood's career sheds new light on her enormous, albeit uneven, contributions to American cinema. This persuasive text argues for renewed appreciation of Natalie Wood by situating her enigmatic performances in the context of a transforming star industry and revolutionary, post-war sexual politics.
