The recent entry of private entrepreneurs into the world of space has multiplied the number of services provided by instruments in orbit, resulting into a rapid and tumultuous growth of the space economy. More services translate into more launches bringing into orbit more satellites. As a result, circum-terrestrial orbits are filling up alarmingly, and we are only at the beginning of the proliferation of mega constellations that have sprung up in recent years to provide planet-wide Internet connectivity. There are neither national nor international laws for managing the number of orbiting satellites that are growing at such a dizzying rate that real orbital traffic jams are feared. We need to extend to the space around us, but also to the other bodies in the solar system, the concept of sustainable use so as not to repeat the same mistakes we have made on Earth's surface. Around our planet we need to avoid overcrowding of orbits so as not to endanger our planet's economy, which is heavily dependent on the use of satellites. Looking further afield, to the Moon and Mars, for example, we must balance resource utilization with unnecessary pollution of fragile ecosystems. Human settlements will have to respect the ecosystem of these celestial bodies that do not belong to any state but must be absolutely protected in order to prevent an interplanetary version of the tragedy of the commons, unfortunately so familiar in our planet. Particular attention must be paid to the risks of biological pollution. Explorers (both human and robotic) risk carrying terrestrial material. Similarly, handling extraterrestrial samples requires well-equipped laboratories and continuous surveillance.

This book analyses and investigates the neutral legal formulae of the English common law and the Italian and French civil law traditions, together with those used in international settings such as the European Union. It explores the usage of English formulae (and of their Italian and French counterparts) that are mentioned in terms of service, national and EU legislation, and in national and European parliamentary debates. The author takes a comparative approach to analysing the various corpora, carrying out cross-analyses to allow understanding of the usage(s) in contexts of neutral legal formulae. This reveals insights into word frequencies in the three languages and legal systems, as well as in different genres, and the book goes on to compare the relative frequencies of the neutral formulae across the three languages to investigate their variety. A differenza di altri concetti su cui il ruolo svolto dall'Illuminismo e universalmente noto, beneficenza e un termine che appare indissolubilmente legato all'Ottocento, ed a una visione paternalista ed ipocrita dei rapporti sociali. Pochi conoscono le avventure settecentesche dell'idea di " bienfaisance " che, al pari di termini quali tolleranza ed " egalite ", e un frutto maturo dell'Illuminismo, ed una delle parole-chiave dei philosophes. Di questo concetto, essenziale nel dibattito morale settecentesco, il libro esplora le potenzialita concentrandosi sul decennio cruciale della Rivoluzione, da cui la beneficenza uscira profondamente trasformata. Dallo studio delle piu diverse fonti letterarie, tra cui saggistica politico-morale, romanzi ed opere teatrali, emergono le contraddizioni di un pensiero filantropico che la Rivoluzione fece proprio fin dall'inizio, e che dovette percio subire i contraccolpi dell'azione politica, anche violenta, dispiegata in quegli anni. Facendo interagire l'asse diacronico degli eventi storici con una esemplificazione sincronica dei vari aspetti del pensiero del dono, il libro mostra il trapasso dall'immaginario felice della " bienfaisance " illuminista a quello malinconico o dolente della consolazione del malessere esistenziale; mentre sul piano politico l'ideale riformatore degli illuministi si trasforma progressivamente in un piano ragionato di conservazione sociale.

This book explores the techniques and discursive strategies that are typical of the communicative interactions between professionals and laymen in a jury trial. It also investigates the complex relationship that emerges between written and oral communication in different phases of the trial. The analysis takes into account the many nuances that define these dynamics and the various possibilities that the jurors have to intervene in the process, particularly in the light of recent procedural developments. Since Auschwitz, and more and more frequently today, places that were theatres of mass suffering and other atrocities are becoming common features of our cultural landscape. What should we do with these places? Keep them as they were, to remind us of what actually took place there, as ideal museums of past evils? Or should we transform them and, if so, into which forms and according to which principles? Which pasts do these places transmit, and how? This volume uses an innovative semiotic methodology to analyse selected key trauma sites. The author demonstrates that these places can become, once properly interrogated, privileged observatories capable of throwing light upon the many different conflicts, forms of social control, and power relationships that underlie any politics of memory. The selfsame notions of trauma and memory become, in this way, rewritten in quite a different light: far from any kind of naturalistic definition, they emerge as painful «knots» within which many of the most crucial questions in the contemporary world are intertwined.

Verb-particle constructions are not only present in Germanic languages, but they are also found in Romance ones, particularly in some scarcely regulated varieties, such as old languages, dialects and substandard varieties. In this book a corpus of six hundreds of verbs+locative, taken from a Northern-Italian variety, is given and analyzed. The comparison with apparently analogous Germanic verb-particle constructions shows that the Romance ones are the result of an independent, gradual development, requiring - in its final phase - the expression of space (direction) and aspect (result) markers in the verb inflection.

Wackernagels Gesetz verdeutlicht die globale hnlichkeit nat rlicher Sprachen. Bestimmte W rter sowohl indogermanischer als auch nicht-indogermanischer Sprachen haben die Tendenz, in zweiter Position im Satz zu stehen - allgemeiner: Sie stehen so nahe am Satzanfang wie m glich. Wackernagels Gesetz im Deutschen bespricht das Gesetz f r die deutsche Sprache und beschreibt es als Ergebnis von Interaktionen zwischen Syntax, Phonologie und Informationsstruktur. Basis der Untersuchung ist eine elektronische Datenbank (SQL) mit Texten ab dem 8. Jahrhundert. Die Daten zeigen, dass es sich bei Wackernagels Gesetz nicht um ein Ph nomen, sondern um eine Vielzahl von Ph nomenen handelt, die zu einem hnlichen Ergebnis f hren. Die Kategorien wurden mit Blick auf eine sprach bergreifende Anwendbarkeit der Beschreibung (Wackernagels Gesetz, Tobler Mussafia, Initial- vs. Finalstellung von Wackernagelelementen, Serialisierung, Sprachwandel) ber Interaktionen linguistischer Subsysteme formuliert. Die Darstellung verbindet Korpuslinguistik und philologische Analyse und diskutiert das Gesetz als wissenschaftstheoretisches Konzept. - Ein Beitrag zu Typologie und Sprachwandeltheorie.

Die deutsche Sprache wird als eine Sprache mit verschiedenen, gleichwertigen diatopischen Standardvarietäten betrachtet (z.B. Schweizer Standarddeutsch, österreichisches Standarddeutsch, deutschländisches Standarddeutsch). Bei den Sprechern hat sich dieses Bewusstsein für die Gleichwertigkeit der Varietäten allerdings bislang nicht durchgesetzt, was nicht zuletzt mit ihrer Darstellung in Wörterbüchern zu tun hat. Dort trifft man oft auf divergierende Informationen zu diatopischen Varianten. Anhand detaillierter Wörterbuchanalysen wird in dieser Monographie zunächst der Ist-Zustand der Abbildung diatopischer Variation im Wörterbuch dargestellt. Sodann werden Optimierungsmöglichkeiten für alle Stadien des lexikographischen Prozesses aufgezeigt. Im Ergebnis werden Handlungsempfehlungen präsentiert, die von der lexikographischen Datenerhebung über die Konzeption der Wörterbuchstrukturen bis zur Datenpräsentation im Wörterbuch reichen. Damit soll das Fundament dafür gelegt werden, dass die diatopischen Varietäten des Deutschen in künftigen Wörterbuchprojekten gleichberechtigt behandelt werden.

This book attempts to solve Aristotle's definition of arthron in the XX chapter of the Poetics by seeing it in a new light. This definition has always been considered an unsolvable problem. Starting with a detailed analysis of the Greek text, and of the various attempts to emend the text in order to make sense of it, the book provides an analytical description of the critical literature, showing that the solutions proposed up to now need to be revised.The possible solution is found in viewing the XX chapter of the Poetics not as a classification of parts of speech, as it was usually supposed, but by considering the biological definitions of arthron in Aristotle's corpus. This leads to the conclusion that, in linguistics as well as in biology, arthron is a "joint". In this light, the book offers a new textual conjecture for the first example of arthron in the Poetics.
