The Peenem¿nde Wind Tunnels

The Peenem¿nde Wind Tunnels

Wegener Peter P.

YALE UNIVERSITY PRESS
1996
sidottu
In 1943, on orders from the German Air Ministry, young physicist Peter P. Wegener left the Russian front and reported to the Baltic village of Peenemünde. His assignment was to work at the supersonic wind tunnels of the rocket laboratories of the German Army. Here Wernher von Braun led a team that developed the V-2, the world's first large rocket-powered guided missile, and laid much of the groundwork for postwar rocket development. In this fascinating book, Wegener recounts his experiences during Hitler's time, World War II, and his years at Peenemünde. He tells how he was working one night in August 1943 when the Allies bombed the laboratories, but left the wind tunnels undamaged. The tunnels were moved to Bavaria, and Wegener was ordered to follow in 1944. After the war, the tunnels were moved again—this time to the United States, accompanied by the author and other German scientists. Shortly before the end of the war, Wegener visited Germany's underground V-2 production plant to retrieve archival material on aerodynamics that had been stored in caves for safekeeping. He describes the appalling history of the concentration camps where SS guards watched over inmates who toiled underground in inhuman conditions and often did not survive. A photoessay enhances this remarkable memoir.
Prospect Theory

Prospect Theory

Prospect Theory: For Risk and Ambiguity, provides a comprehensive and accessible textbook treatment of the way decisions are made both when we have the statistical probabilities associated with uncertain future events (risk) and when we lack them (ambiguity). The book presents models, primarily prospect theory, that are both tractable and psychologically realistic. A method of presentation is chosen that makes the empirical meaning of each theoretical model completely transparent. Prospect theory has many applications in a wide variety of disciplines. The material in the book has been carefully organized to allow readers to select pathways through the book relevant to their own interests. With numerous exercises and worked examples, the book is ideally suited to the needs of students taking courses in decision theory in economics, mathematics, finance, psychology, management science, health, computer science, Bayesian statistics, and engineering.

The British Virgin Islands (Leeward Islands) play a role in the overall postal history of the Caribbean that is much more important than almost any of the other small British islands due to their close proximity to the Danish West Indies, e.g., St. Thomas, which was a major transshipping point for all of the Caribbean postal systems. The exhibit is structured as a classic postal history study with an organization by markings and rates and encompasses the known postal markings used in the British Virgin Islands from 1787 to 1944 as well as all the postal rates applicable in the colony from 1711 through 1944. The markings shown are the most comprehensive examples in one collection of the entire array of BVI postmarks and other ancillary marks ever assembled. It is unlikely to be ever duplicated. The exhibit was first shown in 1988 and then periodically at other national exhibitions over a 15 year period, receiving 9 Gold medals and two Grand Awards. It also received one international Gold medal at New Zealand 1990. Another great exhibit published by Exhibitors Press
Happy-Performing Managers

Happy-Performing Managers

This book provides contemporary means to solve an age-old conundrum in management - do happy workers perform better? Decades of research and empirical evidence have been unable to establish a strong link between affective well-being, intrinsic job satisfaction and managers' performance. A unique methodology, fresh empirical evidence and a definitive analysis of previous theory and research are employed to support the happy productive worker thesis. The authors test a kindred idea - the 'happy-performing managers' proposition, using advanced statistical techniques. Performance is measured to a previously unachievable level. New empirical evidence is used to predict how affective wellbeing and intrinsic job satisfaction influences managers' contextual and task performance. These findings are argued to have significantly progressed our understanding of what underpins human performance at work. The book prescribes how managers' jobs might be changed to enhance or avoid a decline in happiness because managers' performance is impacting as never before on organisational productivity and the economic prosperity of nation-states. Extraordinary shifts in the global corporate environment mean managers' 'personal troubles' have now become 'public concerns'. An emerging movement to Positive Organisational Scholarship is countering such forces by developing ways to create positive human and organisational wellbeing. Happy-Performing Managers will be invaluable to academics, postgraduate students, human resource practitioners, executives and managers who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the factors that influence human performance in the workplace.

In a time of pressures, challenges, and threats to public education, teacher preparation, and funding for educational research, the fifth volume of the Handbook of Reading Research takes a hard look at why we undertake reading research, how school structures, contexts and policies shape students’ learning, and, most importantly, how we can realize greater impact from the research conducted. A comprehensive volume, with a "gaps and game changers" frame, this handbook not only synthesizes current reading research literature, but also informs promising directions for research, pushing readers to address problems and challenges in research design or method.Bringing the field authoritatively and comprehensively up-to-date since the publication of the Handbook of Reading Research, Volume IV, this volume presents multiple perspectives that will facilitate new research development, tackling topics including: Diverse student populations and sociocultural perspectives on reading development Digital innovation, literacies, and platforms Conceptions of teachers, reading, readers, and texts, and the role of affect, cognition, and social-emotional learning in the reading process New methods for researching reading instruction, with attention to equity, inclusion, and education policies Language development and reading comprehension Instructional practices to promote reading development and comprehension for diverse groups of readersEach volume of this handbook has come to define the field for the period of time it covers, and this volume is no exception, providing a definitive compilation of current reading research. This is a must-have resource for all students, teachers, reading specialists, and researchers focused on and interested in reading and literacy research, and improving both instruction and programs to cultivate strong readers and teachers.

Rescue The Doctor: What Doctors Urgently Need to Know About the New World of Health Care

Doctors are struggling. The profession has changed, from a craft focused on healing and built on knowledge, thought, and character, to what ends up feeling more and more like a factory job with an assembly line mentality, concerned primarily with budgets and efficiency. Doctors have gone from leaders to servants. Stress, uncertainty, and burnout have naturally followed. This is not a book about health care policy, or about what might, could, or should happen in the future. Instead, it's a book to help every doctor understand what is happening - to him, to his colleagues, and to his profession - and to help everyone who works with doctors understand how to harness the power of doctors in order to move health care forward. It's a book that shows doctors what they can do to empower themselves, expand their influence, and make a difference in their professional lives, every day. Solutions to health care problems have become so much more varied and complex than they used to be - but what they all have in common is that they are filtered through doctors. And, unfortunately, too many doctors today are suffering. In this book, you can take the three-step journey to help Rescue The Doctor - REFRAME the way you see the state of health care and the changes affecting doctors worldwide, TRANSLATE these shifts into the skills that you need in order to succeed and thrive, and then DELIVER real results - along the way becoming a more fulfilled, more satisfied, and more successful doctor - a rescued one. Doctors today aren't just patient healers - they're system healers, the connectors between management and patients, research and clinics - the bridge carrying medicine forward into the future. To rescue health care, and make things better - for patients and for society - it's imperative that we Rescue The Doctor. "Pramstaller and Smith offer doctors a clear and useful roadmap to accomplish the patient work that they aspire to. When doctors reframe, translate, and deliver, they rescue themselves and serve their patients. This rescue has implications for doctors, patients, policy makers, and administrators throughout the health care system. The authors do an exceptional job of adapting management principles to physician opportunities." -- Dave Ulrich, Rensis Likert Professor of Business, University of Michigan

The discovery and use of new optical windows where short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) light can be transmitted between areas of intense water absorption is a major development in photonics. This book covers biomedical uses of light at the conventionally used first and second optical windows, and, in particular, explores emerging applications of SWIR light at a third and a fourth optical window (at 1600–1870 nm and 2100–2350 nm, respectively) in the SWIR range. Diagnostic techniques that utilize these windows are reviewed, as are applications to cancer and diseases of organs such as the heart, brain, and skin. The book ends with an extensive discussion of the potential uses of artificial intelligence to enhance the ability to study these diseases at SWIR optical windows.

This open access book is a practical introduction to multilevel modelling or multilevel analysis (MLA) – a statistical technique being increasingly used in public health and health services research. The authors begin with a compelling argument for the importance of researchers in these fields having an understanding of MLA to be able to judge not only the growing body of research that uses it, but also to recognise the limitations of research that did not use it. The volume also guides the analysis of real-life data sets by introducing and discussing the use of the multilevel modelling software MLwiN, the statistical package that is used with the example data sets. Importantly, the book also makes the training material accessible for download – not only the datasets analysed within the book, but also a freeware version of MLwiN to allow readers to work with these datasets. The book’s practical review of MLA comprises: Theoretical, conceptual, and methodological backgroundStatistical backgroundThe modelling process and presentation of researchTutorials with example datasets Multilevel Modelling for Public Health and Health Services Research: Health in Context is a practical and timely resource for public health and health services researchers, statisticians interested in the relationships between contexts and behaviour, graduate students across these disciplines, and anyone interested in utilising multilevel modelling or multilevel analysis. “Leyland and Groenewegen’s wealth of teaching experience makes this book and its accompanying tutorials especially useful for a practical introduction to multilevel analysis.” ? Juan Merlo, Professor of Social Epidemiology, Lund University “Comprehensive and insightful. A must for anyone interested in the applications of multilevel modelling to population health”. ? S. This is a classification of tumours and tumour-like lesions of the liver. It is based primarily on the microscopic characteristics of the tumours, and is therefore concerned with morphologically identi- fiable cell types and histological patterns. The haematoxylin- and eosin-stained section remains the mainstay of morphological diag- nosis, but special histochemical stains are often helpful and have been referred to in the explanatory notes. Readers interested in specific special stains mentioned in the text should consult Labora- tory Methods in Histotechnology of the Armed Forces Institute of *Pathology, Washington, D. c., USA. 1 The results of immunohisto- chemical methods for identifying various tumour "markers" have also been noted whenever indicated. The present classification incorporates all the previously classi- fied tumours, but also includes several new lesions, viz. biliary papil- lomatosis, the fibrolamellar variant of hepatocellular carcinoma and epithelioid haemangioendothelioma. Several subtypes of hepato- blastoma are mentioned. A serous type of bile duct cystadenoma is described. The section on tumour-like lesions has been expanded to include focal fatty change and inflammatory pseudotumour. The section on adenomatous hyperplasia, including macroregenerative nodules, has been amplified. The number of photomicrographs has been increased from the original 56 to 150. Unlike the first edition, the photomicrographs in the second edition are mostly black and white. All are new and were taken of representative cases on file at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.

The majority of undergraduate texts in invertebrate zoology (of which there are many) fall into one of two categories. They either offer a systematic treatment of groups of animals phylum by phylum, or adopt a functional approach to the various anatomical and physiological systems of the better known species. The Invertebrates is the first and only textbook to integrate both approaches and thus meet the modern teaching needs of the subject. This is the only invertebrate textbook to integrate systematics and functional approaches. The molecular systematics sections have been completely updated for the new edition. Strong evolutionary theme which reflects the importance of molecular techniques throughout. Distills the essential characteristics of each invertebrate group and lists diagnostic features to allow comparisons between phyla. New phyla have been added for the new edition. Stresses comparisons in physiology, reproduction and development. Improved layout and illustration quality. Second edition has sold 14000 copies. Nature of the first edition: 'Students will like this book. It deserves to succeed.'
