""Damien, Martyr of Molokai"" is a biographical account of the life and work of Father Damien, a Belgian Catholic priest who dedicated his life to serving the leper colony on the island of Molokai in Hawaii. Written by Raymond J. G. Prindiville, the book explores Damien's journey from his early years as a missionary in Hawaii to his selfless work with the lepers on Molokai, where he ultimately contracted the disease himself and died. The book delves into Damien's tireless efforts to provide medical care, build homes and schools, and create a sense of community among the lepers, who had been shunned and isolated from society. It also explores the challenges he faced from the Church hierarchy, who initially opposed his work, and the political and social climate of Hawaii at the time.Throughout the book, Prindiville paints a vivid picture of Damien's character, his unyielding faith, and his unwavering commitment to the lepers of Molokai. He also examines the impact of Damien's work on the Church and society at large, and how his legacy has continued to inspire generations of people around the world.Overall, ""Damien, Martyr of Molokai"" is a powerful and moving tribute to one of the most courageous and compassionate figures in the history of Catholicism, and a testament to the transformative power of selfless service and love. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
The French Communist Party During the Fifth Republic
The demise of the French Communist Party (PCF) has been a recurrent feature of overviews of the Left in France for the past two decades, and yet the Communists survive. This study examines the factors that undermined the position of the PCF as the premier party of France, but also highlights the challenges that the party faces in a society disillusioned with politics, and the new strategies that it is developing in order to revive its fortunes.

Not a Choice, not a Job

Not a Choice, not a Job

A generation ago, most people did not know how ubiquitous and grave human trafficking was. Now many people agree that the $35.7 billion business is an appalling violation of human rights. But when confronted with prostitution, many people experience an odd disconnect because prostitution is shrouded in myths, among them the claims that "prostitution is inevitable," and "prostitution is a job or service like any other." In Not a Choice, Not a Job, Janice Raymond challenges both the myths and their perpetrators. Raymond demonstrates that prostitution is not sex but sexual exploitation, and that legalizing and decriminalizing the system of prostitution—as opposed to the prostituted women—promotes sex trafficking, expands the sex industry, and invites organized crime. Specifically, Raymond exposes how legalized prostitution in the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, and Nevada worsens crime and endangers women. In contrast, she reveals, when governments work to prevent the demand for prostitution by prosecuting pimps, brothels, and prostitution users—as in Norway, Sweden, and Iceland—trafficking does not increase, women are better protected, and fewer men buy sex. Raymond expands the boundaries of scholarship in women's studies, making this book indispensable to human rights advocates around the world.

I'll make you a star. Everybody will want you. * * *People give credence to Elvis selling ice cream in Ohio, or zombies pushing north from Central America, yet they turn off their reality-meter when it comes to psychotic sex perverts in their living rooms. Bestiality, mutilation, rape, children; perverts pay to see. This is the land of opportunity. One person's sickness is another person's financial success. None of this was on my mind when I answered the ad for Adult actors--no experience necessary.

This insider's account of Colombia's culture and customs helps the reader develop a balanced view of Colombian life today. Colombia has the longest-standing democratic political system in Latin America, but it is also one of the most violent nations in the world. The full gamut of its culture—both positive and negative—is revealed in this insightful book that is ideal for student research. The authors highlight the most notable aspects of contemporary Colombian culture including coffee production, Nobel Laureate Gabriel García Márquez, painter Fernando Botero, vallenato music, and the notorious drug cartels.Colombia is one of the most diverse, regionalistic, and tradition-bound nations in Latin America. Culture and Customs of Colombia offers a thorough examination of those features of national life that make Colombia unique. The book begins by introducing the reader to Colombia's history, geography, and economy. Subsequent chapters discuss the profound importance of the formalities of Catholicism in daily and civic life, as well as the significance of traditional foods and clothing. Colombia's increasingly dynamic cultural scene is detailed in chapters on the performing arts and the plastic arts. The discussion of Colombian literature culminates in a special chapter devoted to the luminary Gabriel GarcÍa Márquez, known the world over for his magical novels, and whose influence and cultural participation in Colombian society are wide-ranging.
