Studies in Islamic Mysticism

Studies in Islamic Mysticism

Reynold A. Nicholson

Mysticism is such a vital element in Islam that without some understanding of its ideas and of the particular forms which they assume it is hard to penetrate below the surface of Muslim religious life. In this book, which was first published in 1921, Professor Nicholson examines the life, work and teaching of three of the most important of the early Súfís - the Persians Abú Sa'íd (937–1049) and Al-Jílí (1365–1406), and the Cairene Arab Ibnu l-Fárid (1182–1235). These great mystics were almost legendary figures; possessors of occult and mysterious powers, whose tombs became holy shrines. They were regarded in effect as saints, but saints canonised by the people while still living, not posthumously by the church. Súfism, as Professor Nicholson suggests, lies at the heart both of the religious philosophy and the popular religion of Islam.

At that time, 1966-1968, we were stressed. We required the outrageous and hyperbolic. So in a rare interlude, I wrote a tale - later to be enjoyed at a "reading" - a few stolen moments of laughter and joy. Recently, I reread these tales. I still laughe

In 1968 during the height of the Vietnam War, our hero, Dr. Reginald Houghton, a wealthy confident Harvard Yale trained physician with two years of internal medicine residency, was assigned by the US Army as a Senior Medical Advisor to the Korean Army. Upon arrival in Korea, he quickly grasped the contradictory tenets of neo-Confucian Korean versus American laws and customs; in a jam what do you do? Follow American or Korean laws or culture? Unlike most U.S. garrison soldiers Captain Houghton decided to have a "positive" experience beyond alcohol, drugs and "business ladies." The novel recounts his sometimes shocking, often humorous adventures with the Korean language, Korean karate, Korean officers, indigent patients, priceless jadeite carvings, and various ladies.

The four travel essays brought together in this volume represent the trips taken by one family living in the huge metropolis of New York. Two of the trips were planned vacations, and two were impromptu weekend visits to get away from the confinements of city life, and its reminder of the pressures work. In these essays, we get an insight into their motivation for travel, its impact, and the reaction of one member of the family. Reynold Burrowes ably chronicles these events with a wit and subtlety which draws his reader in. His wonderful prose gives his readers a sense of presence, whether he takes them along with him to a coal mine or a field of flowers.

First published in 1998. The following essays conclude a series of five, which fall into two groups and are therefore published in separate volumes. While mysticism, save for a few casual references, found no place in the studies on the Lubdbu 'l-Albdb of 'Awff and the Luzumiyydt of Abu '1-'Ala al-Ma'arri, in these now brought together it has taken entire possession of the field. Ibnu 'l-Farid, indeed, is an exquisite poet; and the picture of Abu Sa'id ibn Abi '1-Khayr, drawn by pious faith and coloured with legendary romance, may be looked upon as a work of art in its way. But on the whole the literary interest of the present volume is subordinate to the religious and philosophical. The author has tried to make the reader acquainted with three Sufis famous in the East and worthy of being known in Europe.

The American Horror Film

The American Horror Film is the first overview of this popular genre. It moves from Dracula in 1931 to contemporary films such as Scream and The Sixth Sense. The various characters that recur in horror films - Dracula, Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll, the Mummy, the Werewolf - are discussed, as are repeated themes such as the mad scientist, nuclear anxiety, psychological 'monsters', the living dead, and 'slasher' movies. Key directors including Jacques Tourneur, David Cronenberg, Roger Corman and Joe Dante are covered. The emphasis is on accessibility: while theory is included through reference to gender and politics, women's studies and psychoanalysis, it is introduced carefully and in direct relation to the films being discussed. No prior knowledge of the subject area is assumed. An extensive Filmography is included and reference is made at the appropriate point to the most pertinent writing on horror. Overall, this is an ideal introduction to the area for all students and general readers interested in the American horror film. Key Features: *Includes 10 film stills *Covers major films such as King Kong, Little Shop of Horrors, Psycho, The Exorcist, The Omen and I Know What You Did Last Summer *Only up-to-date textbook on the subject.
