Christian communities flourished during late antiquity in a Zoroastrian political system, known as the Iranian Empire, that integrated culturally and geographically disparate territories from Arabia to Afghanistan into its institutions and networks. Whereas previous studies have regarded Christians as marginal, insular, and often persecuted participants in this empire, Richard Payne demonstrates their integration into elite networks, adoption of Iranian political practices and imaginaries, and participation in imperial institutions. The rise of Christianity in Iran depended on the Zoroastrian theory and practice of hierarchical, differentiated inclusion, according to which Christians, Jews, and others occupied legitimate places in Iranian political culture in positions subordinate to the imperial religion. Christians, for their part, positioned themselves in a political culture not of their own making, with recourse to their own ideological and institutional resources, ranging from the writing of saints' lives to the judicial arbitration of bishops. In placing the social history of East Syrian Christians at the center of the Iranian imperial story, A State of Mixture helps explain the endurance of a culturally diverse empire across four centuries.

A ship is a flexible structure that moves bodily and distorts when it encounters waves. This behaviour is potentially dangerous and it must therefore be predicted as a necessary part of ship design. Hitherto the theory of ship structures has had to employ simplifying assumptions, and the dynamical theory has been founded largely on the assumption of rigidity. This book, however, shows how the wave responses of a ship can be calculated using linear dynamics. This general treatment adapts the techniques of structural theory, hydrodynamics, oceanography and statistical theory to the needs of naval architecture. In a radically new departure the authors unify these various techniques in their systematic use of dynamical theory. The principles are applicable to offshore structures in general as well as to ships.

In this book, first published in 1977, Richard Flathman sets out to provide a systematic understanding and an assessment of individual rights. He pursues the first objective primarily by analysing the salient characteristics of the uses of 'rights' in ordinary language. Establishing, exercising, respecting and violating rights are treated as activities forming a social 'practice'. This practice consists of an interrelated set of rules, norms and beliefs that are generally accepted and acted upon by persons who participate in the practice. Both the form and the content of the practice change substantially over time. The author's analysis of civic individualism casts doubt both on the communitarian conceptions of the proper relationship between the individual and society and on the strongly a- or anti-political individualism (and the right to private property it has emphasised) that has occupied a significant place in political philosophy from Hobbes to Nozick.

First published in 1979, this book examines past thought and research about the social and psychological causes of juvenile delinquency in Western society. The first few chapters summarise major delinquency theories and survey an extensive list of studies that demonstrate those theories. The author then develops a single model of individual causation from the divergent theoretical traditions. The model includes such variables as social class, parent-child relations, school experiences, strain, peer relations, personal values and the perceived risk of being caught in lawbreaking. Testing the model with information from 734 large-city adolescents results in several innovations in the measurement and conceptualisation of key variables in delinquency research. In his search for a better understanding of delinquency, the author shows the usefulness of examining the impact of all the variables at once and finds that the major theories of delinquency complement rather than contradict one another.
