Whether winning world championships or falling into last place, fielding teams with Hall of Fame players or trotting out bumbling boys of summer, the Pittsburgh Pirates have thrilled, frustrated, and fascinated generations of fans since 1876. To date, the Pirates have won five World Series and have a total of thirty-six players and managers in the Hall of Fame-including Honus Wagner, Pie Traynor, Lloyd and Paul Waner, Ralph Kiner, Willie Stargell, Roberto Clemente, and Bill Mazeroski. The Pirates Reader is a tribute to the fans, players, and teams who have forged the franchise's rich history. Richard Peterson has collected the writing of baseball's greatest storytellers and brings to life the players, games, and magical moments for this classic and well-loved team.
In the deciding game of the 1992 National League Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves, the Pittsburgh Pirates suffered the most dramatic and devastating loss in team history when former Pirate Sid Bream slid home with the winning run. Bream's infamous slide ended the last game played by Barry Bonds in a Pirates uniform and sent the franchise reeling into a record twenty-season losing streak. The Slide tells the story of the myriad events, beginning with the aftermath of the 1979 World Series, which led to the fated 1992 championship game and beyond. It describes the city's near loss of the team in 1985 and the major influence of Syd Thrift and Jim Leyland in developing a dysfunctional team into a division champion. The book gives detailed accounts of the 1990, 1991, and 1992 division championship seasons, the critical role played by Kevin McClatchy in saving the franchise in 1996, and summarizes the twenty losing seasons before the Pirates finally broke the curse of "the slide" in 2013, with their first playoff appearance since 1992.
The St. Louis Baseball Reader is a tale of two teams: one the city's lovable losers, the other a formidable dynasty. The St. Louis Cardinals are the most successful franchise in National League history and the St. Louis Browns one of the most colorful. Now Richard Peterson has collected the writings of some of baseball's greatest storytellers to pay tribute to both these teams. His book, the first anthology devoted exclusively to the Cardinals and Browns, covers the rich history of St. Louis baseball from its late-nineteenth-century origins to the modern era. ""The St. Louis Baseball Reader"" is a celebration of the many legendary stars and colorful characters who wore St. Louis uniforms, and the writers who told their stories, including Alfred Spink, Roger Angell, George Will, and Baseball Hall of Fame writers Bob Broeg, J. Roy Stockton, Red Smith, and Fred Lieb. Here, too, are John Grisham, who grew up a Redbirds fan in Mississippi, and Jack Buck, the most identifiable voice in Cardinal history. Great players - Grover Cleveland Alexander, Rogers Hornsby, Marty Marion, and Satchel Paige - tell their own stories, while Bill Veeck offers an account of his wild ride as the last Browns owner and Whitey Herzog shares regrets about the play that cost the Cardinals the 1985 World Series. From the days of the Gas House Gang to the 1944 ""Streetcar Series,"" from Bill Veeck's legendary stunts to Mark McGwire's pursuit of Roger Maris's home-run record, the Reader will bring back memories for every fan. It takes in all of the magic of the ballpark - whether re-counting the unhittable pitching of Bob Gibson, the slugging prowess of Stan ""The Man"" Musial, or the sterling glove-work of Ozzie Smith - along with reflective commentaries that tell how Jackie Robinson confronted racism and Curt Flood challenged the reserve clause. St. Louis is a city blessed with a memorable baseball history, and ""The St. Louis Baseball Reader"" perfectly captures the joy and heartbreak of its winning and losing teams. It's a book that will delight current fans of the Cardinals and old-timers who fondly recall the Browns.

A post–World War II memoir of a childhood in working-class Pittsburgh"Alongside August Wilson and John Edgar Wideman, Richard Peterson is among the most evocative chroniclers of Pittsburgh, their colorful hometown. I loved Growing Up With Clemente for both its unnostalgic lyricism and its utter honesty." —David Maraniss, author of Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero"Richard Peterson's memoir reminds you of Faulkner's assertion that man will not merely endure, he will prevail. For that's what Peterson has done, and he makes this story about the grandson of a Lithuanian immigrant—this quintessential American story—new all over again. It's vivid. Fascinating. Troubling. Sad. And finally satisfying. A triumph both in the living and in the telling. I read it in two sittings, fully in its thrall." —Kent Haruf, author of PlainsongPete Peterson's prose picks you up by the scruff of the neck and the seat of the pants and pitches you deep into a place and time that will hurry you back to your own coming of age. He is Pittsburgh to the bone and his writing—trenchant, crisp and painfully honest—reflects it. If you regard the place where you grew up as special, this book is for you. I commend Growing Up With Clemente to you with a writer's highest praise: I wish I'd written it."—Phil Musick, is a veteran Pittsburgh journalist and author of six books, including a biography of Roberto Clemente."An engaging, clear-eyed account of a working-class childhood in Pittsburgh, set against the backdrop of Roberto Clemente's storied career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Peterson is forthright in his depiction of the limited hopes and expectations of working-class kids in what was then a toxic industrial landscape. Rich in period detail and sense of place, Growing Up With Clemente is above all a book about memory and about ambiguous memories nonetheless cherished, a revealing excursion into a time now gone." —Laurie Graham, author of Singing in the City: The Bonds of Home in an Industrial Landscape"I always enjoy Pete Peterson's writing immensely. His prose is consistently vivid, poignant, smart, and utterly without pretension. Growing Up With Clemente is no exception." —Jeffrey Hammond, Reeves Distinguished Professor in the Liberal Arts, St. Mary's College of MarylandGrowing Up With Clemente is a personal history of the hardscrabble life of Pittsburgh's South Side during the city's post–World War II renaissance. It is also the intimate story of an American boy who played baseball on the city's dilapidated playgrounds and rooted for his beloved sports teams while growing up and struggling in Pittsburgh's blue-collar neighborhoods. Though among the worst professional teams in the 1950s, the Pirates and Steelers still inspired the working-class dream of a life beyond the steel mills. And in the midst of it all was the towering, isolated figure of Roberto Clemente. Clemente would eventually become a symbol of pride, loyalty, courage, and sacrifice for a city that had initially rejected him and for a young boy who spent his youth looking for a hero but had to grow up before understanding Clemente's greatness. With sensitivity and eloquence, Richard Peterson captures a time and place easily overlooked or forgotten but important to understanding the significance of sports in shaping America's working-class character. Whether discussing race, sex, class, or any of the other larger issues of the world in which he grew up, Peterson conveys an honesty rarely found in memoirs. Growing Up With Clemente is an engaging read, sure to be a hit in both the literature and sports communities.
Managers and National Culture primarily looks at the role of managers in private-sector companies in fifteen advanced and newly industrializing nations throughout the world: the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Russia, Poland, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea, the Territory of Hong Kong, the People's Republic of China (PRC), and Malaysia. The authors are experts in their knowledge of the countries they write about; and as a group, they are able to provide greater insight about particular nations than could be offered by one person trying to cover such a diverse nations. The editor then discusses the similarities and differences both within and across these fifteen nations. The book begins with an introduction by Peterson, the editor of the volume. Here he provides a brief historical overview of the developments in International Management since World War II, as well as the rapid internationalization and globalization of the world economy in recent years. The next chapters discuss the role of managers in the fifteen countries. Each chapter uses a common outline, including: the definition of managers; the growth trends in managerial employment; the status and ideology of managers in that culture; the link between societal values and managerial values and behavior; the ways that managers are recruited, selected, appraised, and compensated; the role, if any, of managers in labor relations; and future trends regarding managers. The book concludes with the editor's discussion of the similarities and differences of national managers.
Seven decades of the intense Steelers-Browns rivalry.Football historians regard the games between the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers as the basis for one of the greatest rivalries in NFL history. Authors Richard Peterson and Stephen Peterson, in telling the engaging story of these teams who play only a two-hour drive along the turnpike from each other, explore the reasons behind this intense rivalry and the details of its ups and downs for each team and its fans. The early rivalry was a tale of Browns dominance and Steelers ineptitude. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Browns-led by Hall of Famers ranging from Otto Graham and Marion Motley in the 1950s to Jim Brown, Bobby Mitchell, and Leroy Kelly in the 1960s-won 32 of the first 40 games played against the Steelers. In the 1970s, the Steelers-led by Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, and the Steel Curtain-finally turned things around. When the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, Art Rooney agreed to move the Steelers only if the Browns also moved into the AFC and played in the same division so that their rivalry would be preserved.Despite the fierce rivalry, these cities and their fans have much in common, most notably the working-class nature of the Steeler Nation and the Dawg Pound and their passion, over the decades, for their football teams. Many fans are able to regularly making the 130-mile trip to watch the games. From the first game on October 7, 1950, where Cleveland defeated the Steelers 30–17, to last season's infamous helmet incident with Mason Rudolph and Myles Garrett, the rivalry remains as intense as ever.
Throughout the history of man's relationship with the Creator God, Yehovah, there has been a reoccurring cycle among the people of God falling into idolatry and turning their backs on true worship. Yehovah God has consistently used INDIVIDUALS. He has chosen to spark the fires of revival. While large corporate Churches have held themselves up as doing "The Work of God," they have often become hierarchical and authoritarian. These same Churches have developed traditions that stifle spiritual growth. Each large Church has created a college to perpetuate its teachings. They mold students into obedient clones to be used as Church administrators and ministers. The number of study papers and booklets produced by these churches are mind numbing. These corporate approved materials are used to brainwash the ecclesia and reinforce the Church's "Statement of Beliefs". Over time, Statements of Belief come to be viewed as "The truth and nothing but the truth." Once you have this mindset, there is no room for spiritual growth or further revelation.

Richard Peterson
Edizioni Polistampa
2014
nidottu
Richly illustrated in color, this handbook aims to impart the skills that allow the reader to answer the question, "Why does this painting matter?" Organized chronologically, with passages of historical background, we follow Richard Peterson's probing descriptions of painting in Santa Croce, the Brancacci Chapel at the Carmine, the Uffizi and Accademia, Santa Maria Novella and San Marco, and other remarkable repositories of the city's masterpieces. Here is what two greatly admired scholars say about Looking at Painting in Florence. "You want a stunning pair of eyes to see the paintings in Florence with? Fresh, deeply informed, alive to detail. Without pedantry? This gift of a book is it." Robert Hass, Professor of English, University of California, Berkeley, and former poet laureate of the United States. "To read this book is akin to being taken by the hand by a close friend who quietly and undidactically observes, describes, and interprets." Susan Madocks Lister, Head of Art History, The British Institute of Florence.

This twenty-fifth anniversary edition of Willie's Time: Baseball's Golden Age restores to print Charles Einstein's vivid biography of one of baseball's foremost legends. With a new preface from the author, this volume replays the most dramatic moments of the Say Hey Kid's career - from the 1951 Miracle Giants to the Amazing Mets of 1973 - and takes us inside the lives of Ruth, DiMaggio, Aaron, Durocher, and others along the way. Einstein offers a compelling and complete look at Mays: as a youth in racist Birmingham, a triumphant symbol of African American success, a sports hero lionized by fans, and yet all the while, still a very human figure destined to play for two decades amid baseball's Golden Age. First published in 1979, Willie's Time was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.

The result of a major research project funded by the National Science Foundation, this book focuses on unionized grievance procedures in four major industries: steel manufacturing, retail department stores, nonprofit hospitals, and local public schools. Authors David Lewin and Richard B. Peterson identify the determinants and measures of grievance procedure effectiveness and examine the consequences of grievance procedure usage at the individual level. Their work, the first comprehensive study of its kind ever published, serves not only to advance our knowledge of grievance procedure dynamics and outcomes, but also demonstrates the efficacy of behaviorally-oriented research into modern industrial relations.
