Le cancer de l'oesophage a une incidence lev e et un faible taux de survie. Il est donc n cessaire de proc der un d pistage des l sions pr curseurs afin d'identifier les personnes pr sentant un risque lev de d velopper un carcinome oesophagien invasif. Il n'existe pas de m thode de d pistage standard pour les cancers de l'oesophage, mais l'endoscopie est la m thode la plus couramment utilis e. Bien que l'endoscopie ait une sensibilit et une sp cificit lev es, elle n'est pas facilement accept e par les patients en raison de son co t lev . Les endoscopistes et les pathologistes du pays sont peu nombreux et principalement bas s en ville, ce qui rend difficile l'acc s leurs services pour les patients des zones rurales. Des tudes ont montr que la cytologie de l' ponge oesophagienne est une m thode de d pistage du cancer de l'oesophage sensible, moins co teuse, moins invasive et facilement acceptable par les patients. Elle s'est galement r v l e sensible dans la d tection des infections oesophagiennes, en particulier chez les patients atteints d'une maladie immunod ficiente acquise.
