"In the Shadow of the King" is the second in a series of collections of short stories and novellas by Shawn M. Tomlinson. The stories included were influenced by Robert W. Chambers' "The King in Yellow," the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard, and take their place within the Cthulhu Mythos. Tomlinson recently published the first biography of Chambers, "Robert W. Chambers: Maker of Moons: Author of The King in Yellow Unmasked."
Going Pro for $200 & How to Choose a Prime Lens
Photographer and writer Shawn M. Tomlinson, author of the Photo Curmudgeon column and books, explains in detail the joys of working with a professional, albeit older, DSLR, the Nikon D1. "In fact, you can put your hands on a professional DSLR body and a lens for around $200 if you really want to know what all the fuss is about," Tomlinson writes. "No, I'm not talking about a Nikon D4S that, ah, 'fell off a truck.' I'm talking about the very first, ground-up DSLR for the professional market. The Nikon D1." The author covers buying and working with the Nikon D1, illustrating points with many D1 photos. In the second part, Tomlinson explains the usefulness of prime lenses. He considers the uses, advantages and disadvantages, and provides a conversational approach to making the move to primes. "In this short guide, I give you some pointers about what prime lenses do, what type you may need for your particular photographic vision and how to choose what you need," Tomlinson writes.
Your 2nd Dslr & the Workhorse Dslr: Canon Eos 20d
Photographer/writer Shawn M. Tomlinson explains the reasons why you need a second DSLR camera, and how to choose one. "The point is that, as a photographer, your DSLR is your main instrument or tool," Tomlinson writes. "You need to be so familiar with it that it is automatic for you to get it to do what you want." He covers the basics of buying and working with a second DSLR, illustrating points with many photos. In part two,'The Workhorse DSLR: Revisiting the Canon EOS 20D," he explains in detail the joys of this great camera. "Still, it all comes back to the 20D. It was and is a workhorse of a DSLR, mostly metal and rugged, and it produces spectacular images. I use mine frequently. Sure, it has a little more grain than my newer DSLRs, but grain is not a bad thing. The colors are fantastic, as are those produced by most Canon cameras." The author covers the basics of buying and working with the Canon EOS 20D, illustrating points with many photos from that DSLR.
Getting Started in Photography & Sony A100: Great Starter Dslr
In 'Getting Started in Photography," Photographer and writer Shawn M. Tomlinson creates a quick guide to help budding photographers. The book includes equipment advice, exercises for becoming better, photo processing basics and more. From the book: "What anyone starting out needs is, well, a starting point. Some basic information about equipment and technique to get everything moving. And, hey, I'm here to help." In part two, 'Great Starter DSLR: Revisiting the Sony A100,' he takes an in-depth look at the camera and continues his series devoted to helping budding photographers get started without breaking the bank. In this case, Tomlinson considers the first Sony DSLR, the A100. From the book: "After waiting the proper mourning time for Minolta - about a year - Sony took the black armband off and unveiled its first DSLR, the A100. And why is this important now? It's vitally important if you are a beginning photographer and want to get a great DSLR and great lenses that won't mortgage your house."

Photographer and writer Shawn M. Tomlinson, author of the Photo Curmudgeon column and books, explains in detail how to choose a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. From the boo: "Choosing a camera for a serious photographer - whether a budding amateur, long-time enthusiast, semi-pro or pro - is a serious consideration because it is the main tool of the trade. It is what makes what you do possible. No matter how good the camera, it doesn't make up for lack of skill, talent or vision. That all has to come from you. What the right camera will do is make it easier and more possible to achieve your photographic vision." The author covers the basics of buying and working with a DSLR body, illustrating his points with many photos. This is volume 11 of the Shawn M. Tomlinson' Guide to Photography series.

Tales of horror fiction with wit and humor. Well, a bit. That sums up the stories in this collection by Shawn M. Tomlinson. They were inspired by the usual suspects: H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard and, of course, Robert W. Chambers. This collection includes all the tales from In the Wake of the King and In the Shadow of the King, plus a couple of bonuses. If it is in the autumn when you read them, so much the better.

Photographer and writer Shawn M. Tomlinson reconsiders the camera brand that got him started long before digital single-lens reflex cameras existed. In this 12th volume of Shawn M. Tomlinson's Guide to Photography, the author outlines the history of the camera maker, its film and digital cameras, and explains why Pentax still is a viable choice for the serious amateur, enthusiast, semi-pro and professional photographer. From the book: "I was a Pentax Loyalist for years, then a Pentax Apologist, then I rather switched that fight it anymore, then I began to re-appreciate Pentax. ... The point was/is that I write these guide books to help the less-than-wealthy budding photographer get the best equipment possible for the lowest prices possible. ... I write this stuff because I know what it's like to yearn for the newest, shiniest cameras and lenses, yet at the same time know that I cannot possibly afford them. I know there are a lot of other people out there who have the same problem."
Going Pro for $200: Revisiting the Nikon D1
You've heard about the wonders of the professional digital single-lens reflex cameras, how they handle, how they feel in your hands. You've looked at Internet reviews and sample images. You've oooed and ahhhed at every curve, button and dial on the pro DSLRs. Let's face it: you've drooled. So have I. But those prices. Yikes. Never did you think as a photographer enthusiast or wedding photographer or weekend photographer that a pro DSLR - a Canon 1Dx, a Nikon D3x or a Nikon D4s - was within reach. In fact, you can put your hands on a professional DSLR body and a lens for around $200 if you really want to know what all the fuss is about. No, I'm not talking about a Nikon D4s that, ah, "fell off a truck" somewhere. I'm talking about the very first, ground-up DSLR for the professional market. The Nikon D1. Many may scoff, but there are good reasons to acquire this pro DSLR that once cost $6,000 when it was new in 1999. The first reason is you can get one now for around $100.
Going Pro for $500: Revisiting the Nikon D2x
A while back, I wrote a guide to the first truly professional and practical DSLR camera, the Nikon D1, titled: Photography: Going Pro for $200: Revisiting the Nikon D1. That volume proved popular and I hope it helped some photographers to get started with their first pro DSLRs. The aged D1 may not have the megapixels of modern cameras, and it certainly has some frustrating menu items, but it is a fun and inexpensive way to get your hands on a pro DSLR without spending a lot of money. This book recently was expanded for print and adds details about the Nikon D1x and D1H. The thing is that, if you are like me, once you've shot with a pro DSLR, it makes you hungry for more. But those current models - the Canon EOS 1Dx and Nikon D4s (the latest as of this writing) - still have huge price tags that can bring tears. The best thing is that, used, you can put your hands on a D2x for less than $400 and get one of the best lenses Nikon makes - the Nikon AF D 50mm f/1.8 - for another $100.

The Hitchhiker in Time columns were the single most popular things ever written by Shawn M. Tomlinson, which honestly doesn't say all that much. All together, they appeared in fewer than 10 newspapers between 1988 and 2001. Well, multiple copies of those newspapers, of course. The highest circulation was approximately 40,000, so not exactly Bob Greene levels. Still, Tomlinson had a following with these columns and to a great extent, they hold up well today. Either that or Tomlinson would like to think so. Many of these columns appeared in chapbooks over the years, but this is the first full collection of them to be in print.

It has taken me 37 years to write this biography of author Robert W. Chambers. Along the way, I wrote and published many articles about him, but did not complete the biography until 2014. I got the idea of writing it when I was 15, and the reason I got the idea is the same reason it has taken so long to write the book. There simply is not that much information about Chambers out there. Despite his fame and thorough integration in New York high society, very little was written about him during his lifetime. This volume contains the Expanded Edition of the biography, Robert W. Chambers: Maker of Moons, as well as the collection of articles, originally titled, Robert W. Chambers: In Search of the Unknown Author of The King in Yellow.

Everyone thinks his or her granddaughter is the best, most beautiful and most wonderful child in the world. I am no different. I first photographed my granddaughter, Kara Kutny, on her 8th birthday in 2013. I had planned just to photograph her birthday party, but she had different ideas. She took me on a grand tour of her favorite play spots, the places she felt happy. Not often do I photograph people, so I was a bit surprised that some of these images were some of the best I had done. I never have posed Kara or asked her to pose. She just does it naturally. In the next two years - well, even on that first day - Kara wanted to shoot her own photos and she did, with my DSLRs. She was good from the beginning, and she has improved every time we have ventured out on our Voyages of Photography together. And remember as you look at these images that my granddaughter is the best, most beautiful and most wonderful child in the world.
Design Your Own Book: Get Started on Your Journey to Self-Publishing (B&W)
You've done it! You've finished your novel (or memoir, or how-to, or poetry collection, etc.). Sit back. Breathe a sigh, take a drink, light a cigar. You've done it! Now what? Usually, an author is so exhilarated by finishing a book that he or she doesn't really think about what's next. Sure, there are those dreams of every publisher knocking at your door, starting a bidding war for your manuscript and your book becoming a best-seller over night. And that can happen. It does occasionally, but more often the hard work still is to come. This book is not for those authors who get an agent who gets them editors who convince their publishers to publish their books. This book is for those intrepid souls who decide the only way to maintain control over their books - and/or to make more money per book than with a traditional publisher - is to self-publish.
Historical Perspectives on Multilingual Education

In a linguistic and cultural landscape that has become more diversified, it has become more and more challenging for politicians, policymakers, researchers, as well as teachers, to deal with the increasing complexity of current classrooms. This book explores multilingualism from a historical and critical perspective. Drawing from three contexts – Canada, England and France – and beginning at a time of societal changes in the 1960-70s, the book offers an analysis and interpretation of when and why bilingualism was regarded as a problem in education, and the reasons for the turn towards multilingual education and its subsequent dominance of educational thinking in the English-speaking world. In so doing, the authors provide a unique critical stance at the multilingual turn that has since taken place. They examine language education policies and discourses as well as social representations around languages, their speakers, their practices and their identities. They conclude with their concern about multilingual education at a crossroads, particularly at this increasingly divisive political time, and what we might do to move forward in language education practice and policy.
How to Choose a Prime Lens: Expanded Edition
Photographer and writer Shawn M. Tomlinson, author of the Photo Curmudgeon column and books, explains in detail the usefulness of prime lenses for photographers who typically only use zoom lenses in this expanded edition. He considers the uses of prime lenses, the advantages as well as the disadvantages, and provides a conversational approach to making the move to this type of lens. Prime lenses are sharper and have less distortion, less chromatic aberration and brighter maximum apertures than zooms, he reports. Tomlinson examines the most common prime lenses, how they are used and what a photographer can expect to pay. "In this short guide, I give you some pointers about what prime lenses do, what type you may need for your particular photographic vision and how to choose what you need," Tomlinson writes in the book.

"Just like me to never have any money when the end of the world comes," thought Martin Fahy as he walked through the bitter, ceaseless rain. He laughed slightly and wondered what he was going to do now. Sure, he had been the one who always knew The End was coming soon, but he just couldn't convince anyone else. He wasn't a religious fanatic or anything and his predictions of the coming doom had nothing to do with apocalyptic visions or cultist beliefs. It was based largely on his continual observation of scientific predictions. And now, it all was happening. Fahy realized what he'd always said was his prime philosophy still was true: The only way out is through...

Film is back! And about time, too. We just were getting a little too comfortable with the idea of snapping selfies on our dumb phones at the ends of vanity sticks when film returned to slap us up. Film is not for the faint of heart. It takes serious effort, serious time. It costs money for each frame, from buying the film to paying to develop it or developing it in a film tank. Only those interested in the unique and fantastic look of film will brave this path. The Film Photography Book is for us, those interested in all aspects of film photography from choosing cameras and lenses, to choosing film and subjects, to buying chemicals and processing. The book can serve as a refresher to those who now are returning to film photography after a long absence, and as a "getting started" course for those who never shot film in their lives. It's an adventure, a new Voyage of Photography, part of Shawn M. Tomlinson's Guide to Photography Series, the beginning of a sub-series about film photography. Come on along.
