Dominion and dynasty

Dominion and dynasty

Stephen G Dempster

Apollos

Christian theologians rarely study the Old Testament in its final Hebrew canonical form, even though this was very likely the Bible of Jesus and the early church. However, once read as a whole, the larger structure of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) provides a 'wide-angle lens' through which its contents can be viewed. In this stimulating exposition, Stephen Dempster argues that, despite its undoubted literary diversity, the Hebrew Bible possesses a remarkable structural and conceptual unity. The various genres and books are placed within a comprehensive narrative framework which provides an overarching literary and historical context. The many texts contribute to this larger text, and find their meaning and significance within its story of 'dominion and dynasty', which ranges from Adam to the Son of Man to David, and to a coming Davidic king.
Tsetse Biology and Ecology

Domestic livestock in Africa are of importance not only as a source of milk and meat but also as a source of animal traction enabling farmers to cultivate larger areas, with crops providing the staple foods. Trypanosomosis, a parasitic disease transmitted cyclically by the tsetse fly (Glossina spp), is arguably still the main constraint to livestock production on the continent, preventing full use of the land to feed the rapidly increasing human population. Sleeping sickness, the disease caused in humans by species of Trypanosoma, is an important and neglected disease posing a threat to millions of people in tsetse-infested areas. Often wrongly thought of as a disease of the past, the prevalence of human sleeping sickness is increasing in many areas. Although alternative methods to control the disease are being investigated, such as immunological approaches, use of chemotherapy or exploitation of the trypanotolerance trait, it is only control or eradication of the tsetse fly vector which will remove the threat of the disease rather than providing a better means of 'living' with it. As a result of the economic impact of tsetse-transmitted Trypanosomosis, a large amount of research literature has been produced. This book provides a comprehensive review of this literature. The text is divided into four parts: tsetse biology and ecology, epidemiology, vector control and control of trypanosomosis. The book is invaluable for medical and veterinary entomologists, parasitologists and epidemiologists.
Contest for California

Contest for California

Stephen G. Hyslop

California's early history was both colorful and turbulent. After Europeans first explored the region in the sixteenth century, it was conquered and colonized by successive waves of adventurers and settlers. In "Contest for California," award-winning author Stephen G. Hyslop draws on a wide array of primary sources to weave an elegant narrative of this epic struggle for control of the territory that many saw as a beautiful, sprawling land of promise. In vivid detail, Hyslop traces the story of early California from its founding in 1769 by Spanish colonists to its annexation in 1848 by the United States. He describes the motivations and activities of colonizers and colonized alike. Using eyewitness accounts, he allows all participants--Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-American--to have their say. Soldiers, settlers, missionaries, and merchants testify to the heroic and commonplace, the colorful and tragic, in California's pre-American history. Even as he acknowledges the dark side of this story, Hyslop avoids a simplistic perspective. Moving beyond the polarities that have marked late-twentieth-century California historiography, he offers nuanced portraits of such controversial figures as Junipero Serra and treats the Californios and their distinctive Hispanic culture with a respect lacking in earlier histories. Attentive to tensions within the invading groups--priests and the military during the Spanish era, merchants and settlers during the American era--he also never loses sight of their impact on the original inhabitants of the region: California's Native peoples. He also recounts the journeys of colonists from Russia, England, and other countries who influenced the development of California as it passed from the hands of Spaniards and Mexicans to Americans. Exhaustively researched yet concise, this book offers a much-needed alternative history of early California and its evolution from Spanish colony to American territory.

For Such a Time as This?: One Man's Spiritual Journey

For Such a Time as This?: One Man's Spiritual Journey

Although this book is autobiographical in content, my primary purpose for writing has not been to tell the facts of my life. Rather, I have tried to share my "spiritual journey"-the way in which God took hold of my life and has gradually changed me from the inside out so that I can better represent him and accomplish the purpose for which I was created. This spirituality, however, is not primarily ethereal or mystical; rather, it is an unseen reality being worked out in the life of a normal guy who lives in this broken world of ours. My passion and prayer is that some younger people will find inspiration and direction as they read my story. - Steve Humble
The Vaudois - Last Faith Standing: An Incredible Story of Faith, Survival and Endurance
In the 11th and 12th Centuries there was a great religious movement in Western Europe known as the vita apostolica, fueled by a desire of devout Christians to return to the simple faith of apostolic times. Originating in reaction to the greed, Simony and wealth of the Roman church, the movement's principal tenets were poverty of the clergy and the zeal for individual souls. The movement prompted reforms within the church but also precipitated a massive exodus from the church and the emergence of hundreds of religious movements. Over the next several centuries, the combined efforts of the Catholic Inquisition and the newly-formed mendicant orders succeeded in eliminating all of these dissident movements except one. The Vaudois or Waldenses, sequestered in the Alpine valleys of northern Italy, survived the Inquisition and 800 years of persecution, and remain an independent religious denomination today. The book tells the Vaudois story in the context of the times, from the movement's 12th Century origins in the south of France, though the terrors of the Medieval Inquisition, its 16th Century encounter with the Protestant Reformation, its near annihilation in the 17th Century, its resurgence in the 18th Century to the ultimate achievement of religious freedom in 1848. The story is told with deference to the historical milieu in which they lived and probes the nature of the Vaudois people, the ebb and flow of their fate, the foundations of their faith and strengths and the conditions that contributed to their remarkable survival.

This is a collection of poetry written beginning in 1975 until the early 1990s. The writing of the poems was done based upon direct life experiences, events or inspirations found in day-to-day living. The poems cover a wide range of topics, yet focus, for the most part, on how we view love, our relationships, and dealing with life as a whole. The author uses a style that came, in part, from his Grandmother. She was greatly influenced by the tone and craft of Longfellow and Frost. While he is not a poet by trade, his work weaves an interesting and sometimes amusing tapestry of one man's journey through his "youthful" years.

Stephen Hall argues that democracies can preserve their norms and values from increasing attacks and backsliding by better understanding how authoritarian regimes learn. He focuses on the post-Soviet region, investigating two established authoritarian regimes, Belarus and Russia, and two hybrid-regimes, Moldova and Ukraine, with the aim of explaining the concept of authoritarian learning and revealing the practices that are developed and the sources of that learning. Hall finds clear signs of collaboration between countries in developing best survival practices between authoritarian-minded elites, and demonstrates that learning does not just occur between states, rather it can happen at the intra-state level, with elites learning lessons from previous regimes in their own countries. He highlights the horizontal nature of this learning, with authoritarian-minded elites developing methods from a range of sources to ascertain the best practices for survival. Post-Soviet regional organisations are crucial for the development and sharing of these survival practices as they provide 'learning rooms' and training exercises.

The fateful days and weeks surrounding 6 June 1944 have been extensively documented in histories of the Second World War, but less attention has been paid to the tremendous impact of these events on the populations nearby. The Lost Paratroopers of Normandy tells the inspiring yet heartbreaking story of ordinary people who did extraordinary things in defense of liberty and freedom. On D-Day, when transport planes dropped paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions hopelessly off-target into marshy waters in northwestern France, the 900 villagers of Graignes welcomed them with open arms. These villagers – predominantly women – provided food, gathered intelligence, and navigated the floods to retrieve the paratroopers' equipment at great risk to themselves. When the attack by German forces on 11 June forced the overwhelmed paratroopers to withdraw, many made it to safety thanks to the help and resistance of the villagers. In this moving book, historian Stephen G. Rabe, son of one of the paratroopers, meticulously documents the forgotten lives of those who participated in this integral part of D-Day history.
