The third edition of The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks is an updated and expanded edition that explores oak forests as responsive ecosystems. New chapters emphasize the importance of fire in sustaining and managing oak forests, the effects of a changing climate, and advanced artificial regeneration techniques. This new edition expands on silvicultural methods for restoring and sustaining oak woodlands and savannahs, and on management of ecosystem services, including wildlife habitat. It also incorporates new material on evaluating landscape-scale, and cumulative effects of management action compared with inaction. Nine of the fifteen chapters cover updated information on the geographic distribution of US oaks, oak regeneration dynamics, site productivity, stocking and stand development, even- and uneven-aged silvicultural methods, and growth and yield. This edition includes a new section with colour illustrations for improved visualization of complex relationships. This book is intended for forest and wildlife managers, ecologists, silviculturists, environmentalists, and students of those fields.

Exploring Physical Geography promotes inquiry and science as an active process. It encourages student curiosity and aims to activate existing student knowledge. One way this is done is by employing a learning-cycle approach where students’ exploration precedes the introduction of geographic terms and the application of knowledge to a new situation. Another method used is to ensure every concept is covered within two pages allowing students to complete a topic in a short interval of time. This text also contains a wealth of figures to take advantage of the visual and spatial nature of geography and the efficiency of conveying geographic concepts.

What could be more noir than a diner? From the greasy spoon to the gourmet sit-in, these 19 stories show why diners aren't family friendly. Diners are the place where heists are plotted, bodies get dumped behind, and police are tipped off. These eateries host every crime from domestic disputes and drug deals to premeditated murder and mob mutiny. It's all fluorescent-lit, fly-riddled entertainment to the drunk, recovering, or wish-they-were. Whether the characters are the cooks, criminals, customers, or somewhere in-between, these short works pack a gut punch on par with the saltiest, soggiest Grand Slam breakfast special. There're breakups and bruises, gambling rackets and gang warfare, butchering and familial dismemberment--even schmoes tapping into a parallel universe or two. No matter who enters or at what time, wet, weary eyes always seem to find a steaming cup of joe to cloud-gaze in--and cry. (Forewords by Nevada McPherson and Manny Torres, titled, "Get in, loser. Counseling Through Community Conditions

Counseling Through Community Conditions

Understanding that clients exist within a web of community conditions - schools, neighborhoods, policies, and social norms - this deeply relevant book equips counselors to recognize, assess, and respond to the mental health challenges shaped by social determinants of health. This resource moves beyond symptom-focused care to address "the causes of the causes" behind mental health outcomes. Using vivid case examples, practitioner insights, and reflective questions that are relevant across diverse practice settings, counselors are empowered to act on what truly drives well-being and to champion a more equitable, compassionate approach to mental health. Counseling through Community Conditions represents a comprehensive and contemporary resource for counselors and related mental health professionals across settings who wish to embody an approach to their practice that accounts for the full range of community conditions that influence development. Social determinants of mental health (SDMH) not only serve as a lynchpin that unifies the myriad bio-psycho-social-cultural-political influences on mental health but also as a skeleton key that can unlock pathways to mental health based on client-specific cues about well-being. This text represents the first of its kind within the counseling literature to provide a depiction of how an SDMH framework can serve as an ontological impetus for holistic and developmentally focused counseling practice that is firmly rooted in social justice and equity-minded action. The SDMH have been embraced by related health professions such as psychiatry, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and social work with each providing specialized periodical and text resources through their member organizations.

This comprehensive book is designed to accompany the primary text in any criminal justice class where writing is emphasized, or can be used as an excellent primary text for a criminal justice course in writing administrative and technical reports. The Criminal Justice Student Writer's Manual, 6e is designed to help students learn how to research and write in criminal justice, and improve their writing ability in general. While helping students with every aspect of the writing process–formatting, source citations, grammar, sentence structure, research, and utilizing available sources–it relieves instructors from the time consuming job of teaching these skills, and allows them to concentrate on the subject matter of the course they are teaching. This book is the most comprehensive book on the market that deals specifically with writing criminal justice papers. It gives specific directions for writing a variety of papers in criminal justice, from introductory to advanced, while also providing instructions on “how to write,” and how to format the paper and cite sources following the American Sociological Association’s and the American Psychological Association’s guidelines. There is really no other book on the market that provides the comprehensive directions to writing papers in criminal justice that are found in The Criminal Justice Student Writer’s Manual.
The Importance of Average

The Importance of Average

The Importance of Average calls attention to the policies and practices that discriminate against the silent majority of students in the American educational system. Arguments presented emphasize the collateral damage caused to average students by legislative mandates, administrative policies, teaching practices, parenting beliefs, and adherence to strict psychological constructs. Each of these factors has created a pervasive psycho-educational belief of average ability. The authors challenge what they consider as a pseudo-definition of 'average' that was brought about as an attempt by policymakers to test their way out of addressing the true inequities found in society. Further, the authors identify how educational policymakers have sacrificed the education of an entire class of students by creating the illusion that underachievement can be eliminated simply through lowering standards and examination pass rates. In chronicling the plight of average students, the authors capture the emotions and attitudes of teachers, parents, and students whose frustrations have been set aside in order to meet other special interests. The authors explore methods that provide students of average knowledge in any given area with the appropriate tools necessary for succeeding in school. Finally, the authors argue that there is no such thing as 'average' intelligence.
