What if the president of the United States authorized a secret biological weapon attack against an American city as part of a homeland security experiment intended to provide the government with real-time information showing how people would react after an actual terrorist's attack? And what if you and your family happened to be vacationing in the target city when that government experiment occurred? That's the situation that ex-Navy SEAL Trace Austin and his family find themselves in when they go on vacation to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and become trapped behind barbed wire, subject to quarantine and martial law.

New grad student Katie Russell hears a violent struggle in a student's apartment above her own. Upstairs, she discovers Ava's naked and unconscious body lying on her bed. After a young man threatens Katie and runs away, she takes Ava to a hospital for an invasive sexual assault exam. Ava's inexplicable refusal to file a complaint forces Katie to testify in a university hearing, one that results in meaningless sanctions. Outraged, Katie teams with a stalwart retired police detective in a perilous attempt to seek justice and takes a clandestine job within the police department. As she searches for another victim, one willing to testify in court, she confronts issues of Title IX, rape culture, criminal law, and a university administration that prefers sexual assault to remain secret. In the book's urgent climax, Katie is drawn into the case on a personal level, with more than justice on the line.

This collection represents Steven M. Johnson's 7th book; some of his books have gone to several editions. With the exception of a drawing done in 1962, most of the work included in this book was published in 1984 and 1991, though many drawings were created in intervening years up to and including 2017. Johnson began to focus on a specialty around 1974 while working as a magazine cartoonist. The specialty was whimsical variations and humorous alternative versions of existing products. Most of the drawings in this large collection of nearly 400 panels were published first in black-and-white. Select drawings have been converted to color for this volume. The style of presentation emulates the appearance of book of comics, yet the drawings are not comics, having no narrative, plot development or recognizable characters. Each panel is a separate invention or product idea with many drawings. The panels have been arranged by theme. Johnson developed a habit of thinking up product ideas while still half asleep in the morning. Notes were made before the ideas vanished from his mind. Thinking of variations intrigues him especially: An example is the fifty-six shirt and tie combinations included in this book. Some readers are sure to think that the inventions have, as an online critic noted, "already been invented." This is because in many cases, his concepts foretold future, actual products. The glasses with video or computer-generated images projected onto the inside glass surface were drawn in 1992, long before Google Glass was a product. A vacuum cleaner that is small enough to fit underneath furniture and that runs around on its own was drawn and published in 1991, long before the Roomba He has been told that he "stole" the automobile periscope from Larry David, who used the concept in his "Curb Your Enthusiasm" series, yet the drawing was first published in the mid-1980s. A reader will discover that the tone of the book varies from silly to serious. The author is comfortable thinking in either mode, and the method he employs for coming up with silly concepts is the same thaty he uses for his pessimistic images.

Relations between Taiwan and the People?s Republic of China have oscillated between outright hostility and wary detente ever since the Archipelago seceded from the Communist mainland over six decades ago. While the mainland has long coveted the island, Taiwan has resisted - aided by the United States which continues to play a decisive role in cross-strait relations today. In this comprehensive analysis, noted China specialist Steven Goldstein shows that although relations between Taiwan and its larger neighbor have softened, underlying tensions remain unresolved. These embers of conflict could burst into flames at any point, engulfing the whole region and potentially dragging the United States into a dangerous confrontation with the PRC Guiding readers expertly through the historical background to the complexities of this fragile peace, Goldstein discusses the shifting economic, political and security terrain, and examines the pivotal role played by the United States in providing weapons and diplomatic support to Taiwan whilst managing a complex relationship with an increasingly powerful China. Drawing on a wealth of newly declassified material, this compelling and insightful book is an invaluable guide to one of the world?s riskiest, long-running conflicts.

Dreambooks in Byzantium

Dreambooks in Byzantium

Steven M. Oberhelman

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2008

Dreambooks in Byzantium offers for the first time in English translation and with commentary six of the seven extant Byzantine oneirocritica, or manuals on the interpretation of dreams. (The seventh, The Oneirocriticon of Achmet ibn Sereim was published previously by the author.) Dreams permeated all aspects of Byzantine culture, from religion to literature to everyday life, while the interpretation of the future through dreams was done by professionals (emperors had their own) or through oneirocritica. Dreambooks were written and attributed to famous patriarchs, biblical personages, and emperors, to fictitious writers and interpreters, or were copied and published anonymously. Two types of dreambooks were produced: short prose or verse manuals, with the dreams usually listed alphabetically by symbol; and long treatises with subject matter arranged according to topics and with elaborate dream theory. The manuals were meant for a popular audience, mainly readers of the middle and lower classes; their content deals with concerns like family, sickness and health, poverty and wealth, treachery by friends, fear of authorities, punishment and honor-concerns, in other words, that pertain to the individual dreamer, not to the state or a cult. The dreambook writers drew upon various sources in Classical and Islamic literature, oral and written Byzantine materials, and, perhaps, their own oneirocritic practices. Much of the source-material was pagan in origin and, therefore, needed to be reworked into a Christianized context, with many interpretations given a Christian coloring. For each dreambook the author provides a commentary focusing on analyses of the interpretations assigned to each dream-symbol; historical, social, and cultural discussions of the dreams and interpretations; linguistic, lexical, and grammatical issues; and cross-references with Achmet, Artemidorus, and the other Bzyantine dreambooks. There are also introductory chapters on Byzantine dream interpretation; the authors, their dates, and sources; the manuscripts of the dreambooks; and a lengthy discussion of the contribution of these dreambooks to psychohistory, cultural history, historical sociology, and gender studies. The book is unique in that it offers a full study, through translation and commentary, of the oneirocritica to a wide audience - Byzantinists, Arabists, cultural historians, medievalists (several of the Byzantine dreambooks were translated into Latin and became fundamental dream-texts throughout the Middle Ages), and psychohistorians, all of whom will find the book useful in their study of dreams, transmission of Arabic sources by Byzantine authors, and cultural anthropology. Together with the Oneirocriticon of Achmet, it offers a complete study of dream-interpretation in medieval Greece.
Cicero's Accretive Style

Cicero's Accretive Style

Steven M. Cerutti

University Press of America

sidottu
Cicero's Accretive Style is a book about the nature of the Ciceronian exordium and its rhetorical structure and function. Through a sentence-by-sentence stylistic analysis of the exordia of a selection of Cicero's judicial speeches, this book explores how Cicero uses a variety of rhetorical strategies to fulfill the aims of the exordium as he himself defined them. The speeches selected for study include the Pro Quinctio, Pro Roscio Amerino, and Pro Rege Deiotaro, and cover the span of Cicero's career. The focus of the analysis is on Cicero's "accretive" style—not a rhetorical device in the formal sense, but a conscious, stylistic effort whose effect is rhetorical. Because Cicero also wrote important treatises on oratory and rhetoric, this book measures how closely Cicero followed his own guidelines laid down for the exordium, and how and under what circumstances he deviated or departed from them.

The early nineteenth century was a time of great change as the United States transitioned from the colonial era to the industrial age. Benjamin Wright's engineering career spanned the better part of that time from 1790 to 1840.In Benjamin Wright: Father of American Civil Engineering, Steven M. Pennington chronicles Wright's life and varied career from country surveyor to his early work on America's railroads. After surveying the Mohawk River for navigation improvements and supervising the engineering of the Erie Canal project, he then went on to contribute to such projects as the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal near Philadelphia, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal near Washington, DC. From the capital city, Wright advanced his engineering practice as America grew and viewed its manifest expansion to the West.Throughout his life and work, Wright's personal connections, politically, socially, and technically, were far reaching. Wright understood the mechanics and connectivity of how politics and economics demonstrated themselves. He worked with leaders across the business and engineering communities to make a lasting social, economic, and historical contribution.Benjamin Wright understood the necessity to establish an organization of practicing engineers to stimulate technical, business, ethical, and professional attitudes. In 1839, he participated in organizational meetings of what would become the American Society of Civil Engineers which, in 1970, designated him the "Father of American Civil Engineering.

Trenton, like the state of New Jersey, is often maligned these days, but there was a time when Trenton was the fiftieth largest city in the United States and boasted worldwide leaders in the iron and steel, rubber, and pottery industries. Like many cities of its comparative size and prowess that came of age in the Industrial Revolution, Trenton diminished in the aftermath of World War II and has become, for many, one of the "lost cities"--a place of lessened population, abandoned houses, and shuttered factories. Featuring a series of meditative explorations on the essence of the American post-industrial city through the prism of Trenton, this book explores the city's history, architecture, parks, factories, and neighborhoods through text and image, highlighting the importance of such post-industrial cities.

Plain Diversity

Plain Diversity

Johns Hopkins University Press

Plain and simple. American popular culture has embraced a singular image of Amish culture that is immune to the complexities of the modern world: one-room school houses, horses and buggies, sound and simple morals, and unfaltering faith. But these stereotypes dangerously oversimplify a rich and diverse culture. In fact, contemporary Amish settlements represent a mosaic of practice and conviction. In the first book to describe the complexity of Amish cultural identity, Steven M. Nolt and Thomas J. Meyers explore the interaction of migration history, church discipline, and ethnicity in the community life of nineteen Amish settlements in Indiana. Their extensive field research reveals the factors that influence the distinct and differing Amish identities found in each settlement and how those factors relate to the broad spectrum of Amish settlements throughout North America. Nolt and Meyers find Amish children who attend public schools, Amish household heads who work at luxury mobile home factories, and Amish women who prefer a Wal-Mart shopping cart to a quilting frame. Challenging the plain and simple view of Amish identity, this study raises the intriguing question of how such a diverse people successfully share a common identity in the absence of uniformity.
Horse Trading in the Age of Cars

Horse Trading in the Age of Cars

Steven M. Gelber

Johns Hopkins University Press
2008
sidottu
The trading, selling, and buying of personal transport has changed little over the past one hundred years. Whether horse trading in the early twentieth century or car buying today, haggling over prices has been the common practice of buyers and sellers alike. Horse Trading in the Age of Cars offers a fascinating study of the process of buying an automobile in a historical and gendered context. Steven M. Gelber convincingly demonstrates that the combative and frequently dishonest culture of the showroom floor is a historical artifact whose origins lie in the history of horse trading. Bartering and bargaining were the norm in this predominantly male transaction, with both buyers and sellers staking their reputations and pride on their ability to negotiate the better deal. Gelber comments on this point-of-sale behavior and what it reveals about American men. Gelber's highly readable and lively prose makes clear how this unique economic ritual survived into the industrial twentieth century, in the process adding a colorful and interesting chapter to the history of the automobile.
