Sue Glover's Bondagers and the Straw Chair

Sue Glover's Bondagers and the Straw Chair

John Hodgart

Association for Scottish Literary Studies

nidottu
Sue Glover (1943 - ) began writing plays in the 1970s, making her stage debut at the Little Lyceum in 1980 with The Seal Wife, her first full-length play, in which many of the recurring features and concerns of her work are to be found: the influence of oral culture and folklore, and the re-examination of history, legend and myth from a female perspective. John Hodgart's Scotnote examines two of Sue Glover's plays, Bondagers and The Straw Chair. Both plays can be seen in the context of a very strong tradition of modern Scottish feminist drama which includes the work of Ena Lamont Stewart, Joan Ure, Liz Lochhead, Rona Munro and others. Bondagers is a powerful and moving drama about a band of brave, vulnerable women struggling to survive hardship, exploitation and injustice. The Straw Chair is set on St Kilda, and tells the story of Lady Grange's exile on that distant island. In both plays, Glover gives voices to exploited or alienated women whose identity has been determined by their domestic or working role or their social status in a hypocritical patriarchal society. Issues of set and staging are explored as well as the themes of the plays. This guide is suitable for senior school pupils and students at all levels.
Sue Hubbard: Adventures in Art, Selected Writings 1990–2010
Adventures in Art draws together 70 of Sue Hubbard's essays on contemporary and modern art and spans the last 20 years of her career. An award-winning poet, short story writer, freelance critic and novelist, Hubbard's collected essays are part biographical, part lyrical reviews of today's programme of modern art in Britain and provide an honest account of the diversities, originalities and disappointments found there. Adventures in Art is published by Other Criteria and will be available from 13th May 2010.Thick with anecdotes and quotes from historians, artists and commentators, Hubbard's writing guides us through specific exhibitions, as well as the creative lives of her subjects, and places the reader within a context replete with description and art historical value. Her knowledge is incisive and reflective and, in many retrospective cases, the essays read like modern obituaries. Hubbard's writing explores the lives and contributions of artistic figures from Lucien Freud and Sam Taylor Wood, to Marc Quinn and Cy Twombly.
Sue Webster: The Folly Acres Cook Book
This artist's book is a mixture of recipes and ideas embellished with illustrations and photographs. The recipes are by British artist Sue Webster (born 1966), better known as one half of an artist duo with Tim Noble; the illustrations are by both artists. The recipes came as a result of the artists' move to Folly Acres in the British countryside—an organic farm complete with vegetable garden, chickens and wild woodland. Webster had never cooked before but felt compelled to try her hand. "As I executed each idea I would … record each dish on my iPhone. Sometimes I got bored of the edible dish and would photograph the garbage in the bin … sometimes I would also sketch them out—so the book is a combination of recipes and ideas typed on an old German typewriter (until it finally exploded), drawings and crazy photographs."

‘Balance, motion, suspension’ and ‘tension’ form the guiding principles of the work of Sue Fuller (1914–2006, Pittsburgh), one of the most innovative artists in the field of geometric abstraction in the postwar United States. Initially a prominent figure in Stanley William Hayter’s famous New York print workshop, Atelier 17, Fuller developed an interest in geometric abstraction in the mid-1940s, which led her to adopt string as a tool to create three-dimensional compositions in a range of colours and varying densities across a delicate, almost invisible framing structure. Fuller is also known for her use of unconventional materials sourced from various industrial sectors, including fishing lines and synthetic surfaces such as Lucite, which conserve the compositions’ delicate tension and vivid colour schemes in pristine condition to this day. Sue Fuller: Into the Composition constitutes the first monographic study of Fuller’s work and includes contributions by art historians Alex J. Taylor and Christina Weyl. The book is released on the occasion of an exhibition by the same name, held at Luxembourg + Co., London in October 2022.
Sue Ann (Granny) Shares Memories of the Fifties
In seven decades, one year and six months Sue Ann (granny) has seen many changes. The world that is here today is completely different from what it was seventy-one years ago. This is the first in a series of books that talks about the way it was then and now. All the changes through the years have not been for the best. By gaining more technical knowledge, we have lost a lot of values. Many families no longer spend time together or even share a meal together.COVID 19 is a good time for us all to stop and slow down. Take time to have home cooked meals with the whole family. Turn off the TV and listen to each other. Play non-computer related games. This is a story about when life was simple, and children were truly put first. It was a time of no phones, no TV. It was a time of no indoor plumbing, or hot water. It was also a time of adventure and fun. It was a time of living in a beautiful valley that was surrounded by beautiful mountains on all sides. It was growing up in a valley that is full of history and mysterious happenings. Starting in the fifties the San Luis Valley has had a large amount of paranormal activity. Different lights and strange moving objects have been observed in the sky. This is the story of Sue Ann's first ten years of life. Sue Ann is a wife, mom, a grandma (granny) and a great grandma. Sue Ann (granny) decided to share what life used to be like. While she realizes that life cannot go back to that time it is her hopes that people will take values from that time and apply them to today. Common sense, a sense of humor and faith are missing in many families.Linda Lucero I spent over fifty years in the work force. I am still involved in the work force doing home health care for my husband. I have lived for 71 years and 6 months, I have seen many changes in this world. Between us, my husband, Alex, and I have five children, one of which is deceased. We have 16 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and a cat named Garfield.

As I am writing to you, I am thirty-five years old. As you read my story about me being abused, I was only seven or eight at the time.
