Gordon Lyndall

In this "nuanced, discerning account of a life famously flawed in its search for perfection" (The New Yorker), Gordon captures Eliot's "complex spiritual and artistic history . . . with tact, diligence, and subtlety" (Boston Globe). Drawing on recently discovered letters, she addresses in full the issue of Eliot's anti-Semitism as well as the less-noted issue of his misogyny. Her account "rescues both the poet and the man from the simplifying abstractions that have always been applied to him" (The New York Times), and is "definitive but not dogmatic, sympathetic without taking sides. . . . Its voice rings with authority" (Baltimore Sun). Praised by Cynthia Ozick as "daring, strong, psychologically brilliant," Gordon's study remains true to the mysteries of art as she chronicles the poet's "insistent search for salvation."
T-Factor Diet

T-Factor Diet

By now, most people who have tried some of the recent fad diets have realized that those diets don't work; weight lost in the initial stages is eventually gained back, leaving the dieter at the same weight as before, or even heavier. What does work, however, is the program outlined in The T-Factor Diet, the groundbreaking book that has sold well over a million copies since initial publication. Its runaway success launched the best-selling T-Factor Fat Gram Counter and its companion guides, changing a nation's attitude toward high-fat foods. This book's scientifically proven advice remains true today: by understanding the "T-factor" or thermogenic effect, in which carbohydrate calories are burned faster than fat calories, you can lose weight quickly and safely, and keep it off-all without going hungry. Dr. Martin Katahn explains how to choose foods that naturally maximize the T-factor level, thus activating the body's hidden fat-burning potential; he also includes exercises, recipes, and meal plans.

Sue Grafton ups the ante for private investigator Kinsey Millhone like never before in this "taut, terrifying, transfixing"* #1 New York Times bestselling mystery in the Alphabet series. Kinsey Millhone's elderly neighbor, Gus Vronsky, may have been the original inspiration for the term "Grumpy Gus." A miser and a hoarder, Gus is so crotchety that after he takes a bad fall, his only living relative is anxious to find someone to take care of him and get back home as soon as she can. To help, Kinsey runs a check on the applicant, Solana Rojas. Social security, driver's license, nursing certification: It all checks out. And it sounds like she did a good job for her former employers. So Kinsey gives her the thumbs-up, figuring Gus will be the ideal assignment for this diligent, experienced caregiver. And the real Solana Rojas was indeed an excellent caregiver. But the woman who has stolen her identity is not, and for her, Gus will be the ideal victim... "The best and strongest book in the series...Solana is one of the most evil, calculating characters Grafton has created."--*USA Today

T.S. Eliot's Civilized Savage

T.S. Eliot's Civilized Savage

Laurie MacDiarmid

Routledge
2014
nidottu
T. S. Eliot's Civilized Savage revisits this poet's drafts and canonical poetry in a sometimes dismissive critical arena . While contemporary readers emphasize Eliot's charged personal life, his anti-Semitism, his political conservatism, and his misogyny, Laurie MacDiarmid argues that although Eliot's poetics are shaped by private fears and fantasies, in many ways these are the ghosts of a culture that accepts and celebrates him.Comparing early versions with finished poems, this book explores the development and ramifications of Eliot's 'impersonal' poetic without losing sight of his influential, haunting work. Examining Eliot's neurotic relationship with women and his escape into women and his escape into spirituality, this book observes how Eliot conceived and eroticized poetry of worship and a poetic that dictated a sacrificial relationship to a savage God.

T Cell Metabolism and Cancer Immunotherapy

T Cell Metabolism and Cancer Immunotherapy

ELSEVIER SCIENCE PUBLISHING CO INC

T Cell Metabolism and Cancer Immunotherapy delves into the intricate regulation of T-cell immunity and tolerance. As research advances in cell-based therapies, the potential of engineered immune cells to treat cancers and other diseases is becoming increasingly evident due to their powerful capabilities. Additionally, the book offers valuable insights into developing and optimizing strategies for bacterium-based immunotherapies. Despite great advancement in immunotherapy such as adoptive T cell transfer-based regimen, the clinical outcomes remain less satisfactory due to a variety of factors that lessen its therapeutic efficacy. By determining the role and importance of T cell metabolism in the regulation of T lymphocytes that are related to the development and managements of aberrant immunity, T Cell Metabolism and Cancer Immunotherapy designs and develops novel and more effective strategies for improving regimens for patients with aberrant immunity. Within ten chapters the content not only reveals targets of T cell metabolism as critical determinants of immune regulation, but also uncovers unique therapeutic opportunities to improve immunotherapy through targeting T cell metabolism. This fills a significant gap in the knowledge of scientists working in the field of onco-immunology/immunotherapy, and students learning about T cells, metabolism, immunomodulation, and immunotherapy.

T Lymphocytes Subpopulations in Immunotoxicology
T Lymphocyte Subpopulations in Immunotoxicology Edited by Ian Kimber ZENECA Pharmaceuticals, Central Toxicology Laboratory, Macclesfield, Cheshire, UK and Mary Jane K. Selgrade US Environmental Protection Agency, National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory, NC, USA Immunotoxicology is a diverse discipline that embraces the investigation of the adverse health effects that may result from the interaction of xenobiotics with the immune system. T lymphocytes orchestrate adaptive immune responses and are of central importance in the consideration of immunotoxicity. These cells and/or the tissue responsible for their functional maturation (the thymus) have been implicated as the primary or secondary targets for chemical insult. Moreover, T lymphocytes play pivotal roles in the induction and elicitation of chemical and protein allergy and in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disease. Classically, T lymphocytes have been divided into two main populations: CD4 helper T cells and CD8 suppressor/cytotoxic T cells. It is now apparent that there exists within both populations considerable functional heterogeneity, characterized usually by variable cytokine secretion patterns. Two major subpopulations of T helper (Th) cells have been identified and designated Th1 and Th2, with similar, but less well characterized, sub-types of cytotoxic (Tc) cells having been described also. The discovery of functional subpopulations of Th (and Tc) cells has profoundly influenced our view of the immune response and, in particular, our appreciation of the way in which the immune system can tailor responses to meet challenges of different types. This has also translated into a much more detailed understanding of certain immunopathologic processes and the role of T lymphocytes in the development of allergic, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. This book explores the role of T lymphocyte subpopulations in the development and expression of immunotoxic effects. Constituent chapters reveal that a consideration of the impact of chemicals on these diverse T cell populations and the polarization of T cell responses has already contributed greatly to our understanding of the mechanisms underlying immunotoxicity, including immune suppression and allergic and autoimmune responses.
