Don't Let The Iris Destroy Your Small Business
In this lively book, veteran tax attorney Michael Savage provides essential tax advice to small business owners, many of whom pay exorbitant tax fees for mistakes that may have easily been avoided. Without staff attorneys at their disposal, small businesses can get into big financial trouble, not out of dishonesty, but because they don't know where the potential tax landmines lie.Concise, practical and irreplaceably instructive, Don't Let the IRS Destroy Your Small Business covers seventy-six areas of tax law that cause business owners the most trouble, regardless of what business they are in: payroll tax liability, excessive salaries, travel and entertainment expenses, fringe benefits, pension plans, owning multiple companies, and many more.
Don't Look, Don't Touch, Don't Eat: The Science Behind Revulsion
Every flu season, sneezing, coughing, and graphic throat-clearing become the day-to-day background noise in every workplace. And coworkers tend to move as far--and as quickly--away from the source of these bodily eruptions as possible. Instinctively, humans recoil from objects that they view as dirty and even struggle to overcome feelings of discomfort once the offending item has been cleaned. These reactions are universal, and although there are cultural and individual variations, by and large we are all disgusted by the same things. In Don't Look, Don't Touch, Don't Eat, Valerie Curtis builds a strong case for disgust as a "shadow emotion"--less familiar than love or sadness, it nevertheless affects our day-to-day lives. In disgust, biological and sociocultural factors meet in dynamic ways to shape human and animal behavior. Curtis traces the evolutionary role of disgust in disease prevention and hygiene, but also shows that it is much more than a biological mechanism. Human social norms, from good manners to moral behavior, are deeply rooted in our sense of disgust. The disgust reaction informs both our political opinions and our darkest tendencies, such as misogyny and racism. Through a deeper understanding of disgust, Curtis argues, we can take this ubiquitous human emotion and direct it towards useful ends, from combating prejudice to reducing disease in the poorest parts of the world by raising standards of hygiene. Don't Look, Don't Touch, Don't Eat reveals disgust to be a vital part of what it means to be human and explores how this deep-seated response can be harnessed to improve the world.

This book that I wrote was due to humorous thoughts that came to mind as I was coming off¬ medication prescribed by my psychiatrist. I was busy taking notes and drawing funny images on my computer. I was having the best time of my life trying to make light of the otherwise stressful world we live in. Just needed to have some fun poking at certain situations that would pop into my mind. Life is too short not to see the humor in it and realize that if we can laugh at ourselves and others we can heal from past hurts and move forward I'd like to thank my Lord Jesus for giving me the opportunity to find humor in this life and to share the love and joy to others. I feel really blessed

Don't Let the Goats Eat the Loquat Trees
Thomas Hale writes about being a missionary surgeon in the same delightful way James Herriot writes about being a country veterinarian. Dr. Hale's incredible experience in tiny, mountainous Nepal are surpassed only by his talent for telling about them. Imagine, for example, the culture shock of moving to a Hindu country under such rigid religious control that it is not only illegal to proselytize, but illegal to change religions as well. Imagine further the shock of moving to that country as a missionary doctor. Thomas Hale and his wife, Cynthia, also a physician, too on that awesome challenge in 1970.God wasted no time teaching tom the peculiarities of his new culture. But His unusual method left Tom wondering what God was up to. Here is how Tom tells about it:"These were not the phlegmatic, easy-going Nepalis described in books and orientation courses. Those who spoke gesticulated fiercely. Some looked around menacingly; others spat. One thing was certain, however: in the cause of their anger they were united. The word was out: the new doctor had killed a cow. My own sense of participation in the proceedings was intense. I was the new doctor."--ExcerptAs Tom goes on to describe the events the preceded the angry scene in the Nepali village, the image of the spiritually superior missionary quickly evaporates. In a humorous, yet deeply insightful way, the author makes it clear that he is merely a servant, using his skills to the glory of God.Tom concludes this chapter with a thoughtful confession:"In the long run, that cow did much more for me that I did for it. The mild-mannered, uncritical beast made me see in myself those negative attributes I had always ascribed to other American surgeons. Facing two hundred angry men proved to be effective therapy for removing most traces of condescension with which I previously regarded them. It also improved my relations with missionary colleagues and with Nepali brothers and sisters in the church. I guess God had no gentler way of removing some of my imperfections. I only wish I could say, for His trouble, that He finished the job. But it was a start." -- Excerpt.Dr. Hale's book refused to be preachy or condescending. It presents missions as a "want" rather than an "ought." It is sensitive, warm, honest, incredibly funny, and filled with important truths illustrated from unusual and sometimes unimaginable situations.
Sleeping Dogs Don't Lay: Practical Advice for the Grammatically Challenged*and That's No Lie
For years Richard Lederer has entertained fans of the English language with his keen insights, commonsense advice, and witty patter. Now Lederer and Richard Dowis take readers on another journey through our most "wiggy" of languages. How many times have we all heard the word "viable" used in company meetings? The authors show us how "viable" was at one time extracted from medical books, where it is actually defined as "capable of living," and placed into our consumer marketplace. Then there is confusion between "lay" and "lie," which the authors clear up once and for all. These and dozens of delightful examples make this book pure pleasure for language buffs, writers, and teachers.

Anglicans Who Don’t Like Liturgy
In recent decades there has a growing trend, particularly in Charismatic Anglican churches, towards abandoning formal liturgical worship. Influenced by Vineyard churches and a feeling that liturgical worship is unhelpful for mission, these churches have substituted this with a worship song-focused style and 'spontaneous' informal liturgy. John Leach investigates this approach and examines its underlying assumptions. What can we learn from attitudes to formal liturgy, what is the resulting praxis, and where does this leave us? Based on the author’s doctoral research on two Anglican networks, New Wine and Holy Trinity Brompton, this study explores, through participant observation and interviews, why church leaders believe that this is a positive development, and evaluates the wisdom of this position, its relationship with postmodern culture and the spirit of the age, and its effectiveness in long-term formation for discipleship. This volume offers some practical suggestions about the combining of Anglican liturgy and contemporary Christian praise and worship music towards more effective evangelism and discipleship.

I want life. For ten years, Achut Deng surrived at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya after her family was ripped apart by the Second Sudanese Civil War. But Achut wanted to do more than merely survive. She wanted to live. The twenty-two-year civil war essentially orphaned over 20,000 children and drove them from their villages in southern Sudan. Some of these children walked over a thousand miles, through dangerous war zones and across unforgiving deserts. They are often referred to as The Lost Boys. But there were girls, too. Achut Deng was one of them. This is her story. It’s a story of unimaginable hardship and selfless bravery, of tormenting physical pain and amazing emotional resilience, of unbreakable bonds of friendship and family. It’s a story about what happens when your dream comes true, only to give way to a new nightmare. It’s about how hard you will fight to save your own life.
