Th r se's husband, Camille, is feeble and self-absorbed, and when the opportunity arises, Th r se enters into a fierce and sordidly ardent affair with one of Camille's friends, Laurent. In his preface, Zola explains that his goal in this novel was to "study temperaments and not characters". Because of this detached and scientific approach, Th r se Raquin is considered to be an example of naturalism literature.

Meine Ausgabe der ber hmten Selbstbiographie der hl. Therese von Lisieux hat sich bescheidene Ziele gesetzt. Oder, man kann auch sagen, kleine Ziele, wie es f r die kleine Therese passend ist. Ich will einfach den wundersch nen Text, der von geistlicher Erfahrung berstr mt, neu lesbar machen. Nur ganz kleine Anmerkungen habe ich mit eckigen Klammern eingef gt, die so ] aussehen. Wer historisch genauer unterrichtet sein m chte, sollte sich an die Ausgabe von Hans Urs von Balthasar halten: Therese vom Kinde Jesus: Selbstbiographische Schriften. Einsiedeln: Johannes, 2009.
