Full Spectrum Forces or Special Purpose Forces?: A Strategic Decision
The United States once again demonstrated its capability to defeat any nation state's military forces as evidenced by the actions of the Joint Forces of the United States in the decisive victory in Iraq. However once again, we see that the decisive phase of the campaign was not the Major Combat Operation but the follow on Stability and Reconstruction Operation. The United States has won the battle to replace the regime in Iraq but the outcome of the war to establish a stable and pro-liberty regime remains a question as of this time. The Members of Congress and others are asking questions as we complete the task in Iraq and continue to fight the Global War on Terror. Chief among the questions is the one that deals with the Army's structure and organization. The question of the best structure for Stability and Reconstruction Operations has sparked the debate on the best way for the Army to proceed in the Global War on Terror. There are two schools of thought: first, the Army should dedicate a portion of its forces to execute Stability and Reconstruction Operations, while the second, argues the Army should, through modularity, increase the capability of the total force to conduct Stability and Reconstruction Operations. The Army Chief of Staff (CSA) stood up Army Focus Area Stability Operations to review the arguments, provide the Army Staff with an overview, and offer a solution based on independent study and comprehensive in its process. The author participated in Task Force Army Focus Area Stability and Reconstruction Operations and this paper documents the process that was used to consider the question of, "What is the most appropriate force structure for the Army as we continue to execute Stability and Reconstruction Operations"? In this monograph, two opposing perspectives are examined and assessed. The idea that the Army should dedicate a portion of its forces to Stability and Reconstruction Operations and the idea that the Army should make itself more capable This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Teach Like Finland

Teach Like Finland

Finland shocked the world when its fifteen-year-olds scored highest on the first Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a set of tests touted for evaluating critical-thinking skills in maths, science and reading. That was in 2001; but even today, this tiny Nordic nation continues to amaze. How does Finnish education—with short school days, light homework loads and little standardised testing—produce students who match the PISA scores of high-powered, stressed-out kids in Asia? When Timothy D. Walker started teaching fifth graders at a Helsinki public school, he began a search for the secrets behind the success of Finland’s schools. Walker has already written about several of those discoveries and his Atlantic article on this topic received more than 500,000 shares. Here, he gathers all he has learned and reveals how teachers can implement these simple practices, which integrate seamlessly with educational standards.

U2’s significant career far exceeds that of most average successful rock bands, with a prolific output of thirteen well-received studio albums and a sometimes relentless touring schedule. The band is famous for uniquely drawing together music, art, faith, and activism, all within a lucrative career that has given each of these elements an unusual degree of social and cultural resonance. Broad-minded musically and intellectually, U2’soutput is thematically rich, addressing a slew of topics, from questions of faith to anxieties about commercialism to outright political statements. With one of the largest fan bases in the history of rock music, U2 and their work require contextualization and exploration. In U2: Rock ’n’ Roll to Change the World, Timothy D. Neufeld takes up this challenge. Neufeld explores U2’s move from the youthful idealism of a band barely able to play instruments through its many phases of artistic expression and cultural engagement to its employment of faith and activism as a foundation for its success. This book outlines how U2 reshaped the very musical and even political culture that had originally shaped it, demonstrating through close readings of its musical work the dynamic interplay of artistic expression and social engagement.
Insects and Sustainability of Ecosystem Services

Insects and Sustainability of Ecosystem Services

Timothy D. Schowalter

With few exceptions, insects are perceived in industrialized countries as undesirable pests. In reality, relatively few insects interfere with us or our resources. Most have benign or positive effects on ecosystem services, and many represent useful resources in non-industrialized countries. Challenging traditional perceptions of the value of insects, Insects and Sustainability of Ecosystem Services explores the ways insects affect the ecosystem services we depend upon. It also fosters an appreciation for the amazing diversity, adaptive ability, and natural roles of insects. The book discusses how the ways in which we manage insects will determine an ecosystem’s capacity to continue to supply services. It reviews aspects of insect physiology, behavior, and ecology that affect their interactions with other ecosystem components and ecosystem services, emphasizing critical effects of insects on the sustainability of ecosystem processes and services. The author examines the integration of insect ecology with self-regulatory aspects of ecosystems that control primary production, energy and nutrient fluxes, and global climate—functions that underlie the sustainability of ecosystem services. Clearly, we need environmental policies that meet needs for pest control where warranted, but do not undermine the important contributions of insects to sustaining ecosystem processes and services. With in-depth coverage of the multiple, often compensatory, effects of insects on various resources or ecosystem services and on the consequences of control tactics for those resources or services, Insects and Sustainability of Ecosystem Services recommends changes in perspectives and policies regarding insects that will contribute to sustainability of ecosystem services.
