Tina Barney: The Beginning
Long-lost images of family and friends from the late 1970s by the acclaimed portraitist and chronicler of domesticity Over the course of her 40-year career, acclaimed American photographer Tina Barney has illuminated the inner lives of her subjects, observing the generational repetition of familial traditions and rituals as played out in domestic settings. In the summer of 2020, at the height of Covid and quarantine restrictions, Barney began to sort through her archive, which contained thousands of 35mm negatives taken between 1976 and 1980. Finding these long-forgotten images engendered a rediscovery of some of her most intimate memories as a young artist: “the photographs in this book seem like X-rays of my mind and thoughts through the summers I spent with family and friends on the East Coast and in Sun Valley, Idaho.” Revisiting her work from decades prior, Barney found herself meditating on who and where she was at the time, as well as why and how she approached specific subjects. What was the impetus to capture these moments? The Beginning encompasses Barney’s nostalgic exploration of her earliest work in the medium, and further reflects a self-examination of this formative period through a critical lens. The photographs of Tina Barney (born 1945) are in numerous public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Nicola Erni Collection, Zug, Switzerland. Barney's work has been the subject of major recent exhibitions at the New Orleans Museum of Art; Frist Center, Nashville; and the Barbican, London.

"Tidjani Alou's writing sketches the commonplace and the metaphysical, with heft, honesty, and audacity. The range is compelling, as she takes us through lives in places as diverse as Accra and Niamey. The prose is deft, her metaphors sting with accuracy. This is a writer to think and feel with." - Emmanuel Iduma, editor, Saraba Magazine.A grandmother with a food-induced encounter, an ecclesial romance with a tomcat set in the throes of uncertain times, eating and drinking for freedom, wife battery under the watchful eyes of communal love, desperately seeking lovers burdened by violent pasts, and a woman taking liberty after nine children with nine husbands are some of the characters and stories in Antoinette Tidjani Alou's debut fiction collection. In fifteen formidable lyrical prose, Tina Shot Me Between the Eyes explores how the self is shaped and transformed by the knots we yearn to tie around ourselves: familial, spousal, parental, professional, and societal. It tackles how we struggle in relationships for nourishment and fulfilment, and how relationships could kill us and how we could kill to survive - a potent force for understanding humanity and the nuances of acts of violence, tolerance, faith and love.Jamaican-born Antoinette Tidjani Alou teaches French and Comparative Literature at the Universite Abdou Moumouni de Niamey in Niger, where she has lived for more than two decades. She writes in English and in French, covering life-writing, poetry and short stories.

1990 was a positive and fateful year for Germany. The world around Germany changed as well. New states were founded, others were dissolved and revolutions bore their fruit. For Krause, it was a year that changed everything in his life. He went on an adventure trip to Sri Lanka and found his love of dogs. From this point on, Krause's life changed drastically and turned into something completely different. However, it also introduced certain dark elements. A life-threatening disease was only one of several strokes of fate. All these changes started with a small dog, who Krause brought home from Ceylon. 8 years later he turned his passion for dogs into a job, which he still carries out successfully to this day. All that was possible because of what happened one day in March of 1990 in Kandy, Sri Lanka. In this book, he finally gets to tell this very personal story.
